Free Property Tax Assessment Grievance Workshop Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato will host a free Property Tax Assessment Grievance Workshop for residents looking to acquire information on how to challenge their 2023-2024 property tax assessments. The workshop will be held in-person on Tuesday, February 15th, at 10am at Oyster Bay Town Hall, located at 54 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay. “While Nassau County determines your value, we in Town government want to make sure you know that you have a right as a homeowner to challenge your assessment. Remember, your assessment can only be lowered as the result of a

challenge – it can never be raised – and this workshop helps you challenge for free,” said Receiver of Taxes Pravato. “If you are a homeowner who disagrees with the assessed value of your property, I invite you to attend this Property Tax Assessment Workshop, as the property tax grievance deadline of March 1 is approaching.” In January, Nassau County notified residents of their home’s tentative assessed value for the 2023/2024 school tax period and the 2024 general tax period. Any residents who did not receive the notice may view it online at www.mynassauproperty. com or contact their County Legislator.

At the workshop, Receiver of Taxes Pravato will answer questions and show residents how to use online tools to file an “Application for Correction of Assessment” online or via mail. There is no requirement to pay a law firm or agency to file a grievance. Seaford Seniors Earn National SCOPE Awards Demonstrating both academic success and leadership skills, two seniors were recognized for their positive contributions to Seaford High School. Peter Koubiadis and Natalie Villecco were presented with the SCOPE National School Development Council Award for Academic Growth and Student Leadership in Learning. Peter and Natalie were nominated by Principal Nicole Schnabel and Assistant Principals Jennifer Bisulca and Dr. Raphi Morey. They were honored at the Jan. 19 board of education meeting. It is in the arts where Peter has focused much of his attention, having taken numerous art classes during his four years of his high school. He is copresident of the National Art Honor Society and a member of the Mural Club, and was named “most artistic” in the senior superlatives. With aspirations to be a graphic novelist, Peter plans to study fine arts in college, with a possible minor in

English. He has also challenged himself with some of Seaford High School’s most rigorous courses. Since 10th grade, he has taken 11 Advanced Placement courses. Peter has been inducted into the National Honor Society, assists with the annual musical production as a member of the Stage Crew and brings his creative ideas to the Radio Club. Outside of school, he works at the Seaford Public Library. “I’ve been relatively free to pursue the path I’ve wanted,” he said of the wide array of course offerings at Seaford High School. “I’ve had some amazing teachers that have helped me grow in all of my subjects.” Natalie said she has enjoyed a well-rounded experience in high school, exploring multiple areas of interest and finding particular enjoyment in math, public speaking and writing. She has taken seven Advanced Placement courses and six honors-level courses. Her leadership abilities have proven valuable as president of the National

Natalie is also as a member of Best Buddies, the National Art Honor Society and the Brackett Leadership Team, which is planning social and emotional training sessions at Seaford’s two elementary schools. In college, Natalie plans to major in criminal justice or pre-law, with the hope of becoming a family or sports lawyer. She is also considering a degree in business or marketing. Of the SCOPE award she said, “It’s really rewarding to receive this because I’ve put so much dedication and time into school. The opportunities that I’ve been given here have let me come a long way. My teachers have always been there to guide me and help me to get to where they knew I could be.” Peter and Natalie both will graduate in June with an Advanced Placement Capstone diploma, symbolizing their success in AP Seminar and Research, as well as four additional AP exams of their choosing.

No Super Bowl Sunday Is Complete Without Chicken Wings pas. For those who want to avoid such a misstep, this recipe for “Virgil’s Smoked Chicken Wings With Blue Cheese Dip” from Neal Corman’s “Virgil’s Barbecue Road Trip Cookbook” (St. Martin’s Press) is sure to please.

Virgil’s Smoked Chicken Wings With Blue Cheese Dip Serves 4

Marinade 1⁄2 cup vegetable oil 1⁄2 cup hot sauce 4 tablespoons Virgil’s Dry Rub (see below)

Wings 8 large chicken wings 1⁄2 cup Virgil’s Dry Rub (see below) Sauce 10 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 teaspoon cornstarch 4 tablespoons white vinegar 3⁄4 cup hot sauce 1⁄4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

chips on the coals or gas burners. 7. Cook the wings for about 3 hours, flipping every 30 minutes (their internal temperature should be about 165 F when cooked). 8. While the wings are cooking, cut the butter for the sauce into 1-inch cubes and refrigerate. Whisk the cornstarch into the white vinegar, in a small bowl. 9. In a medium sauté pan over medium heat, bring the hot sauce to a simmer and whisk in the thickened vinegar. Return to a simmer, cook for 1 minute, and remove from the heat. 1 cup granulated sugar 10. Add the cayenne and 1⁄2 cup Texas-style chili slowly whisk in the cold powder butter. Keep warm until 1⁄2 cup minced onion serving. 1⁄2 cup granulated garlic 11. Remove the wings 1⁄4 cup dried parsley from the smoker or grill flakes and put half of them into a 6 tablespoons kosher salt bowl, cover with the sauce, and toss. Repeat with the Combine all of the remaining wings and serve on a platter, with the blue ingredients in a medium bowl and whisk together cheese dip on the side. until completely incorporated. 1. To make the dip, combine 1 cup of the blue cheese, mayonnaise, buttermilk, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and salt in the bowl of a food processor and blend on low until smooth. 2. Remove to a medium mixing bowl and fold in the rest of the blue cheese, scallions and celery, being sure to break up the larger blue cheese crumbles. Place in a covered container and refrigerate overnight. 3. Mix all the marinade ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Place the wings in a large container with a lid and pour the mixture over the wings. Toss until the wings are thoroughly coated. Cover and refrigerate for 2 days. 4. Preheat the grill or smoker to 245 F. 5. Spread out the wings on a sheet pan and wipe away any excess marinade. Sprinkle liberally with the dry rub, coating the wings all over. 6. Position the wings on the grill away from the direct heat of the coals or burners, and add hickory to the smoker or hickory

www.fcali.org With locations across Nassau and Suffolk, Family & Children’s Association (FCA) is a not-for-proﬁt organization that is dedicated to providing help and hope to Long Island’s most vulnerable children, families, seniors and communities. FCA envisions a Long Island where a legacy of optimal health, educational success and economic security passes from one generation to the next; each year it serves 30,000 individuals and families in Suffolk and Nassau counties. Its mission strives to make our island a better place for all of us to live, work and raise a family. FCA runs numerous Children’s Mental Health and Wellness Services programs to help children with mental and/or behavioral health issues and their families, regardless of insurance status and provides Health Home Care Management for recipients of Medicaid in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. Services are provided in the home, school and/or other community setting. FCA services utilize a “family-driven” process to create an individualized plan of service for each child and provides access to appropriate services to improve health outcomes and prevent hospitalizations. Family Center Nassau: Family Support services for Nassau residents provided by Family Peer Advocates (FPA) enhance the capacity of families to care for their children who have or are at risk of developing a mental health diagnosis. Youth & Family Integration (YFI): Integrated Mental Health Workers coordinate care for Suffolk County residents including Skill Building and Youth Peer Advocacy for children and Family Peer Support for parents/guardians. Youth Advocacy services are designed to empower youth through a connection with someone who understands what it is like to receive services.

Services (CFTSS): Provides in-home and community based supportive services, including therapy and rehabilitative support services to children who are at risk of being diagnosed or who are formally diagnosed with a mental health diagnosis. Services are available to recipients of Medicaid only. Hearts abound on February 14, and few symbols (and gifts) are more widely associated with a holiday than heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are with Valentine’s Day. Chocolates became trendy in the mid-19th century when the first chocolate bar was made by British company J.S. Fry & Sons by combining cacao powder with sugar and cacao butter to make a rich, melt-inyour-mouth treat that was markedly different than the gritty and greasy drinking chocolate that was losing popularity in Europe. Within a few years, competitor Cadbury introduced the first box of chocolates. It was called the “Fancy Box” and it didn’t take long to become wildly popular. The marriage of chocolate and heartshaped boxes seemed a natural progression, but the National Valentine

Providing another way that enables them to help those we serve and address their financial goals prompted us to develop the Planned Giving Program. It is a natural extension of our other financial services and will enable Life’s WORC to be a better resource to both individuals with disabilities and their families, as well as a broader cross-section of the community.” The Life’s WORC Planned Giving Program offers donors various options. These include: gifts that use appreciated assets as a substitute for cash, gifts that return income or other financial benefits to the donor in return for his/ her contribution, and gifts payable upon the donor’s demise through his/her estate planning. Life’s WORC Board Member Ron Aghassi, a single parent of a 20-year old special needs child who lives in a Life’s WORC home noted, “When I made the decision to place my son, Jacob, in a Life’s WORC home, I felt like a great fear was released. As a single parent,

even though I am not old and am in good health, I always worried what would happen to Jacob if something happened to me. Thanks to Life’s WORC, I no longer have that fear. Hometown Heroes Recognition Applications Now Available Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola have announced that the Town will begin accepting applications for the 2022 Hometown Heroes’ Community Recognition Program. This initiative recognizes the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces – both living and deceased – who are current or former Town of Oyster Bay residents. “My Town Board colleagues and I were amazed by the outpouring of support this program received in its first year by our incredible residents, businesses and local heroes,” said Councilman Labriola. “We are proud to return this important initiative to our communities and we look forward to further recognizing our

veterans, active duty service members, and their families for their commitment to defend our freedoms and democracy.” Banners bearing the nominated individual’s name, rank, photograph and area of service will be unveiled throughout selected park facilities across the Town of Oyster Bay in the months leading up to Veterans Day in November 2022.
