Fresh Air summers are filled with children running barefoot through the grass, gazing at starfilled skies and swimming for the first time. This summer, join volunteer host families in Suffolk County, and open your heart and home to a Fresh Air child. Each summer, thousands of children from New York City’s low-income communities visit suburban, rural and small town communities along the East Coast and Southern Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program. Harlen, age 9, has visited the Tornatore family for two summers. Host dad Albert shared, “Harlen has definitely learned to try new things. I remember our first summer. He was nervous but by the end of the first week, Harlen and my son were having adventures and having so much fun. We went to the aquarium, amusement park, and the kids love the beach.” “My kids get so excited when they get to see Harlen. This summer we went to a drive-in movie, and we were all in the backseat with blankets, pillows and popcorn, snuggled together. Harlen is simply part of our family,” says host mom Allyson. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, notfor-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from seven to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. The rain on my window awakes me in the morning. The scars from the thunder are left on the sky. I lie in bed for most of the morning. For the day to begin for the sun to arrive.

The Seaford High School chapter of National Art Honor Society is showcasing its work in a dedicated area of the Seaford Public Library as a way to share their work with the community. The current display features an autumn/winter theme consisting of seven

pieces of mixed media. The 25-member club plans to change the display and its theme bimonthly. The group will critique the work of their peers and select the seven best pieces to feature for each display. The group is already working on its next theme - current events.

“We are very happy to have this opportunity to feature student work outside of school so that the community can appreciate their talent and growth in the visual arts,” said Michael Kerr, National Art Honor Society advisor.

I ended last week’s column hoping that this month of February would bring with it a little more sunshine into all of our lives… While this is a nice sentiment, of course we know that life does not always work this way, and there are plenty of storm clouds to weather along the way. This just reinforces the notion that we must all take the time to appreciate the little things in life, the special moments, those people we love and the many memories we share, as we simply never know when they will become precisely that… just a faded memory among many others. After the passing of my grandfather nearly a year ago, and the subsequent sale of the

house that my grandparents had called home for more than 50 years, there was obviously much cleaning out and sorting through mementos to be done. In some ways, this was the most difficult task of all. To me, nearly everything held some sort of significance, some deep emotional attachment which evoked so many precious recollections of years gone by. Of course, these are just objects, material possessions which hardly make up for the loss of the person they are associated with. But the photographs… those are truly special. And boy, are there photographs. I, being of the slightly OCD nature, coupled with my fervent love of all things photography, volunteered to take on the initial task

of sorting through and cataloging the boxes upon boxes of albums, envelopes full of developed photos and a few dozen or so frames and collages. Several months later, I’ve barely made a dent in the process. But it doesn’t matter. There’s no rush where memories are concerned. They should be carefully recollected, and savored. Every single photograph tells a story; and every story unlocks a treasure trove of feelings and emotions – some happy, some sad, some wistful… all meaningful in their own respective ways. And winter, while it may not bring a lot of sunshine into our lives, is the perfect time to take a moment to appreciate all the memories that do.

Fifth-graders in the Seaford School District took a field trip to Commerce Plaza in Levittown to experience what it is like to work in the professional world. Known as “the children’s business center for

tomorrow’s business leaders,” Commerce Plaza offers students hands-on, interactive ways to explore careers in a simulated professional environment. Dressed for success and eager to learn, students spent the day “working”

Down to Business as scientists, doctors, bankers, journalists, and more. The field trip was a culminating activity that put into action what students learned about careers in the classroom.

Seaford High School’s Bob Gerbino Wrestling Match was a night of surprise, exhilaration and emotion for a coach that not only transformed Seaford wrestling into a championship team, but vastly impacted the lives of his athletes in ways that shaped their character and success later in life. Before an enthusiastic crowd consisting of wrestling alumni dating back to the 1960s, Seaford Schools Superintendent Brian Conboy paid tribute to his longtime friend and Seaford High School’s beloved wrestling coach Sal LoStrappo, highlighting his remarkable achievements and all that he has contributed during his 20-year coaching career at Seaford High School. Capping his tribute, Conboy presented LoStrappo with a plaque that dedicated the high school’s fitness/wrestling room in his honor. The gesture surprised LoStrappo and brought the crowd to its feet as they clapped and cheered for the man who transformed the wrestling program and its athletes. The Plaque reads: The Coach Sal LoStrappo Fitness / Wrestling Room, Varsity Wrestling Coach, 1993

– 2013, Heart, Soul, Passion, Bang. (Bang was a phrase he used in coaching.) Conboy, who has known LoStrappo since 1973 when they played Seaford Little League together, said, “Sal was an athletic phenom. He was All County football, baseball and wrestling, and captain of all three teams. In high school, he was one of the few kids in that era to play varsity football as a freshman, and by the time he was a senior, he was one of the most well-known athletes in Nassau County,” he said. “When Sal became wrestling coach I remember thinking, ‘that team’s about to change’,” Conboy continued. “Sal reignited a fuse and brought the team to championships almost every year. It is because of his coaching and the success of his team that the Friends of Seaford Wrestling was formed, and with Sal’s blessing, that the Patrick Butler and Bob Gerbino wrestling matches were established.” Conboy also credited JV coach Neil Murray who coached nearly as long as LoStrappo and is also a former Seaford wrestler, referring

to the duo as “Batman and Robin.” Under their guidance, the success of the team led to the transformation of an old rifle range into the fitness/ wresting room, which was part of the district’s 2008 bond issue. “I am very proud that this wrestling room is dedicated to Sal,” Conboy added. “It is a worthy tribute for an excellent athlete and coach.” LoStrappo, who was rather overcome with emotion when the plaque was revealed, thanked all involved and then shouted into the mike with enthusiasm, “Let’s get this match started!” Ending the evening on a perfect note, Seaford won the match against Oyster Bay 47-27 and senior Jake Palmer was presented with the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award. “It was a spectacular night for Seaford Wrestling and for Seaford history,” said Condon, also a longtime Seaford resident and educator in the district who has longstanding relationships with both Conboy and LoStrappo. “It’s one that will be remembered for years to come.”

Shirreffs, the lesson began with an overview of “simple mechanics,” which students already knew as devices that make a job easier, such as pulleys, levers, inclined planes, wedges, screws or wheels and axles. Students eagerly gave examples of each and determined that a catapult is essentially a lever. The teachers divided students into five groups of five and gave them 30 minutes to build and test their catapults. As a guideline, the teachers provided a chart with some examples of catapults. “Be as creative as your minds will allow,” Shirreffs

said as she and Levine canvassed the room to offer guidance. Once their catapults were constructed, each team had three tries to fling the ping pong ball as far as it could go. After several long throws and a few mishaps, the winning team’s ball sailed 13 feet across the classroom. Each member of that team was rewarded for their efforts with a puzzle ball eraser. Students said the activity was challenging but fun. A second group of 25 students also participated in the activity on a separate day.

There’s a variety of exciting, fun, hands-on educational opportunities for students in grades 6-11. This unique summer camp offers programs in a variety of career fields including aviation, construction trades, culinary arts, digital music production, graphic design, marine biology, mechanical and automotive, STEAM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math), veterinary medicine and video production. Explore the opportunities at upcoming Summer Camp Open House nights: Wednesday, February 15 from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, April 1 from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at the Nassau BOCES Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center; or noon-2 p.m. on Sunday, February 5 and Saturday, April 22 at the Hofstra University Physical Education Center. There’s a host of adventures awaiting campers this year: Aviation Academy Let your curiosity soar in this safe yet exhilarating course for potential pilots. Take to the air without ever leaving the ground in Barry Tech’s cutting-edge flight simulator. Learn the basics of commercial flight, from flight planning and air traffic control to weather data. You’ll even have a chance to explore CATAPULT CREATION - Group members Harrison Caico, John McCormick, Patrick employment opportunities available in the industry. Leahy, Ashley Rauch and Angelina Fernandez won the catapult challenge. With 60 popsicle sticks, rubber bands and a plastic spoon, Seaford Harbor fifth graders were challenged to build a catapult that could fling a plastic ping pong ball the farthest across the classroom. The activity was part of the school’s STEAM lunch series, which focuses on projects that encourage students to use science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics, while fostering 21st century skills such as collaboration, communication, critical thinking and problem solving. Get a glimpse into the world of professional music recording while receiving hands-on training in Digital Music Production. Study Video Production in a fully functional television studio, complete with control room. Learn Graphic Design using leading-edge software to create everything from T-shirts to children’s books. Animal and science lovers can follow their calling in the Veterinary Science program, with opportunities for everyone from beginners to advanced students. Study animal handling and grooming, health and nutrition, and anatomy and physiology.
