North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center is pleased to announce that we will be hosting free monthly “Positive Parenting Workshops” in conjunction with Cohen Children’s Medical Center, part of Northwell Health, formerly the North ShoreLIJ Health System. Each workshop will be held at the Guidance Center’s Marks Family Right from the Start Center, located at 80 North Service Road of the Long Island Expressway, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. A pediatrician from Northwell Health will speak at each workshop and also take questions from the audience. The first workshop will focus on issues such as toilet training, bedwetting and other issues of interest related to children’s urological conditions. “Parents can feel overwhelmed when it comes to issues such as toilet training and bedwetting,” says Dr. Lane Palmer, Chief of Pediatric Urology at Cohen

Children’s Medical Center. “There are some very simple techniques that can make the process go very smoothly for both the parent and the toddler.” According to Dr. Reena Nandi, Director of Psychiatric Services at North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center, the monthly Positive Parenting Workshop series will provide parents and caregivers with muchneeded information to help raise healthy, happy

children. “We are thrilled to be partnering with such a prestigious group as the pediatricians at Northwell Health, who bring with them deep knowledge of the kinds of issues that parents need to know for their children’s wellbeing,” she says. total far exceeded the old one set by 85 horn players in Madison, Wisconsin. “I’m very proud to see my students get excited about playing horn,” said Seaford Manor Band Director Dan Krueger, who has been a committee member for the event for seven years. “Paige and Rachel had a wonderful time and look forward to going again next year.”

Here’s Hoping By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Hope: A feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen. And so it begins. February, the month of anticipation, from furry groundhogs predicting the forecast to expressions of love and affection come Valentine’s Day. Is there anyone who isn’t even the slightest bit glad to bid January farewell? Apologies, once again, to anyone with birthdays, anniversaries and other notable milestones during this first month of the new year, the symbolic representation of all things new and fresh. With the possible exception of the few moments of New Year’s Eve celebrations which spilled over into the next morning, I have to

say that, for me, 2016 is severely lacking in positive spin. Sure, winter has spared us its wrath for the most part…save for one tiny twofoot helping of the white stuff. Still, the bitter cold and gray, overcast skies leave something to be desired. There is only so much hibernating and vegetating one can realistically do. (Netﬂix, anyone?) But here we are, turning the page – on the calendar and hopefully on life – as month two begins, providing us with yet another blank canvas to fill. Here’s to getting back to doing those things which make us happy, to not allowing the negativity of other individuals and situations dictate our moods, to rising above the monotony in search of fulfillment.

Here’s to hoping that February provides the perfect precursor to spring, and all the beauty and wonderment it brings. Plus, we have an extra day to take advantage of this year, a bonus opportunity if ever there was one. Now all we have to do is make use of it, and of all those clichéd philosophies we want so badly to believe in. Whatever it is you are hoping for, may you have the courage to go after it. Good things come to those who wait; but a pointed step in the right direction surely doesn’t hurt. Here’s to February, to frosted windowpanes and picturesque winter sunsets and the beginnings of revitalization. Oh, and of course Buddy the Betta’s 1st birthday. Priorities humans, priorities.

As weather forecasters were making it increasingly clear that this snowstorm would have a big impact on the Bay Shore area, Southside Hospital began planning and executing its emergency management plans which were created for natural disasters and have been utilized during occurrences such as Hurricane Sandy. Southside’s staff stocked up on extra supplies and food to make sure all would be properly cared for during the snowstorm. The hospital’s leadership began making provisions early in the week to ensure the necessary staff would be at the hospital to care for patients. This included creating an area for staff to sleep if they needed to stay over to make it to their scheduled shift or if they were unable to safely

travel home on Saturday. Southside employees who slept at the hospital were given a free breakfast. The employee cafeteria remained open all day Saturday and into Sunday to make sure people were well nourished. Southside, along with all of the hospitals in Northwell Health, regularly updated $

Vrooommm! The sound of the car engine was all I could hear. I just got back from the eye doctor. Not good. I knew that someday I would get them, but now? I was only 3 years-old. I looked at my mom and brother. They were talking, but I could not hear them. My brother might have been thinking, “Now I have this loser brother with glasses.” I bet he would have said something but my mom would not let him. She simply wouldn’t. Then my mom took her phone out of her pocket and gave it to my brother. I saw him scroll down until the contact for my dad came up. I was starting to hear now, but faintly. My brother hit the “speaker” button on her phone. “Guess who is going to look even more handsome?” My dad guessed me on the first try. About five more minutes passed, and we were rolling down a “one-

way” parking lot entrance. I saw these menacing looking penguins out of the few inches of window space I had because I was so short. They were staring me down, those ugly penguins. I thought how silly I was to think those penguins are menacing. I thought how my eyes might be acting up or maybe the tinted window might be doing it. I looked up from the seemingly menacing penguins up to the name of the shop. It was called the Eyeglass House. Then we found a spot in the deserted parking lot. When I walked into the store, it was a room where I half expected there to be gas coming out of the wall like a torture chamber. It was a 6’x6’ room with a hat rack and a 2’x4’ bench. There was another door in front of me. I walked through the door, touching a dry, old, rusty doorknob. I looked to the left and saw two desks and at least 100 pairs

of glasses. I saw a bunch of chairs with a life-sized Mickey Mouse. I took a seat… “Slay-terry?” an old woman croaked. My mom, Aidan and I stood up and walked over. The old woman had bright purple glasses and nasty, old, ugly, horribly crooked teeth that reminded me of a beaver’s. She picked out three pairs and I disliked all of them. We tried on a green pair that I looked stupid in, a red pair that I liked the best, and heavy, vomit-worthy blue ones that had holes in the rims that kept the glasses on my face. The holes must have been there to catch a new fashion trend, but the only thing it was catching was strands of my hair. “I like these!” the nasty lady and Mom said. Moments after, we walked out with me wearing the blue glasses. I guess all stories don’t have happy endings.

While it was consistently and heavily snowing last Saturday and many were cleaning up in the aftermath of snowstorm Jonas on Sunday, Southside Hospital cared for 13 women before, during and after they brought new lives into the world. To Southside, Saturday was just any other day; it just so happened to be snowing outside. But in order for patients not to notice any disruption in service or care during a near record snowstorm, it took a great deal of planning from the hospital’s administration and staff. Before the storm began, Northwell Health advised its staff to make the necessary provisions at their homes so that employees who would be working at the hospital during snowstorm Jonas could do so without worrying about their

Regional Kickoff The Stony Brook University Jacob Javits Lecture Center was abuzz with anticipation on Saturday, January 9th, as students, educators and families from across Long Island joined together for the unveiling of the 2016 FIRST® (For the Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC) “Stronghold” theme. Based on popular medieval castle-conquering and battlestrategy games, “Stronghold” involves two Alliances of three robots each on a quest to breach opponents’ defenses, calculate their movements and ultimately overtake their tower. Presented by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island (SBPLI), this annual event served as the official KickOff of the 2016 FIRST Long Island season and included a live broadcast of the game reveal direct to the Javits Center. Hundreds of eager Long Island FIRST students and their parents and coaches listened with rapt attention as FIRST Founder Dean Kamen, FIRST Executive Advisory Board Co-Chair Woodie Flowers and FIRST President Donald Bossi discussed the program as well as the 2016 theme and objective. “One of the amazing things about FIRST is that everyone involved gets more out of it than they put into it,” said Dean Kamen, president of DEKA Research & Development and FIRST Founder. “The kids get opportunities they’d never get elsewhere; it might give them career options they’d never thought about. The teachers see kids who become passionate about learning and the relevance of technology and math [...] We get to be part of a group that is creating the future of the world.” The rules of this year’s game are simple: robots gain points by incapacitating defenses and scoring boulders

through goals in the opposition’s tower. During the final twenty seconds of the game, robots may surround and scale the tower of the opposing team in an effort capture it to earn another 15 points each. Immediately following the game reveal broadcast, the visiting teams received pertinent competition details, a first-hand look at the game field, and were handed their build kits, which contain motors, batteries, a game “boulder”, an AndyMark brand parts kit, construction materials and software program login details, along with

limited instructions. “Leading up to the main competition, FIRST Long Island students will work with coaches and mentors to apply concepts of math, science and engineering to build their robots,” explains SBPLI FRC Co-Directors David Johnson and Debra Winter. “The FIRST Robotics Competition is not just about the design and build of sophisticated robots, our students will also learn important concepts such as teamwork, problem solving

and healthy competition. Over the years, FIRST students from Long Island received more than $8 million in scholarships for higher education, in areas of science, technology, engineering, business or math in college. These students also develop maturity, professionalism and teamwork skills that enrich their lives. Our graduates often pursue careers with sponsoring companies, meeting the businesses’ needs for well-rounded, technically skilled employees.” FIRST isn’t limited to Long Island; more than 3,100 teams from all over the world came together as a community to share in the excitement of seeing the new game unveiled and will draw on this enthusiasm during the six-week build period that is available. During this time, all FIRST students will be asked to design, build, test and update their robots before the start of the 2016 season, which includes 118 Regional and District events beginning in March. These events measure the effectiveness of each robot’s design and control, the power of teamwork and the determination of participating students not only to win, but to learn and have fun. The American Heart Association (AHA) wants you to GO RED on Friday, February 5th for National Wear Red Day to help shine a light on the number one killer of men and women heart disease. Companies, community organizations and residents are invited to get creative to make landmarks, main streets, buildings and homes “Go Red” to kick off February’s American Heart Month. “This is such a simple way to make a difference

in our community. Every red heart, red ribbon or red dress in a store window reminds women, and all of us, how important our hearts are. Heart healthy should be our main priority in February and all year long to prevent our number one killer,” said Dr. Scott Schubach, President of the Long Island American Heart Association Board of Directors and Chairman of the Department of Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery at Winthrop-

University Hospital. In addition to landmarks going red, thousands of employees will participate in National Wear Red Day by donating $5 to the Go Red For Women campaign. In turn, they will receive a red dress pin or wristband, and lifesaving heart health education. Some organizations will offer heart healthy lunch and learn programs, organize healthy walks, or offer healthier foods in vending machines or cafeterias.

The AHA’s Go Red For Women movement focuses on women’s heart health awareness in February because far too many women are still unaware of the facts that heart disease is their number one killer--killing more women than all forms of cancer combined; or that the symptoms of heart attack can be different in women vs. men, causing

women to delay seeking treatment; or that ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for heart disease or stroke. This lack of awareness means that more women than men are dying from heart disease and stroke. Go Red For Women’s goal is to save women’s lives. The good news is that more than 80% of heart disease events in women can be prevented by making simple lifestyle changes like eating healthier,

quitting smoking and exercising 30 minutes daily. The AHA also encourages women to get their “well-woman visit” at their doctor’s office to help detect the early signs of heart disease.
