Did you know? While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn’t until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

WEDDING FLOWERS - Couples are moving away from traditional centerpieces to floral chandeliers and curtains made of blooms for their weddings. Move over bouquets and centerpieces, flowers are taking over weddings in a big way. While wedding trends come and go, flowers will always have a place at the wedding table. The blooms brides and grooms choose and how they decide to display them can say much about the couple’s style. Many modern couples are opting for statement pieces with their flowers to rival the big and bold ideas they’re incorporating elsewhere into their occasions, such as in cakes and clothing. In fact, floral designer Tom Uberuaga says traditional hurricane vase centerpieces are outdated and only focus the eye on the middle of the table. He prefers guests enter the wedding and have their senses stimulated by flowers from all angles. 5 Ways To Cut Wedding Reception Costs Weddings have a tendency to be expensive endeavors. According to The Knot’s 2018 Real Weddings Study, the national average cost of a wedding is $33,931. Nearly half of that ($15,439) is spent on the reception venue alone. As expensive as wedding receptions can be, couples should know that there are many ways to reduce reception costs without sacrificing fun. 1. Choose Foods Wisely Pour over the details of catering costs. The Knot says the average price for catering will be $68 per person. If you opt for an appetizers and cocktails reception, you may be able to shave several dollars off the bill. Look closely at the pricing for buffet versus plated meals. Buffet service often means having a greater quantity of food on hand, which could drive up the cost. Find out if the catering hall can work
with your budget to provide cost-conscious options, like familiar comfort foods instead of gourmet fare. 2. Serve A Custom-Made Cocktail A themed drink, such as punch or a classic spirit with a reimagined, weddingfriendly name, can be less expensive than offering full open bar service. Some couples also opt to pay for only wine and beer rather than a full open bar that includes liquor and mixed drinks. 3. Book A Weeknight Weekend weddings are easier on guests’ schedules, but not on couples’ budgets. Couples can save thousands of dollars by hosting weeknight weddings instead of weekend affairs. Book the venue from Monday through Friday, as even Sunday prices have escalated. The further away from the weekend, the lower the prices are.
4. Fake The Cake The Knot indicates a wedding cake runs roughly $530. Consider displaying a mock cake for photos and then serve a sheet cake during dessert hour. Decorating foam tiers to look like an extravagant cake can save a few hundred dollars, and guests won’t know the difference when they’re biting into a delicious, less costly dessert. 5. Skip The Extras Reception venues may upcharge for all the little details, such as linens in custom colors or chair covers. If you can live without these extras, do so. Ask for a list of itemized extras so you can assess what you want to pay for and what you’d prefer to avoid. Wedding receptions are costly, but there are many ways to save money and still enjoy a memorable evening.

This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes
a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Seaford Garners 41 All-County Music Selections The Nassau Music Educators Association’s All-County music festival gave 41 students from the Seaford School District an opportunity to showcase their abilities in front of a large audience. Concerts were held in January at the Tilles Center at LIU Post. Selections from Seaford High School included vocalists Carly Corsitto, Ryan Demino, Jessica Kofod, Angelina LaVolpe, Nicholas Luciano, Raelyn Luft, Natalie Masters, Meredith Muirhead and Kelly O’Kane, and instrumentalists Angela Dean, Edona Mehmeti,
Liam McDonald, Mary Pecoraro, Sophia Perez and Elizabeth Wingert. Thirteen students from Seaford Middle School were chosen for All-County ensembles including Andrew Ceraulo and Emily Salce from the band Gabriella Barnjak, Paulina Barnjak, Sophia Barnjak, Cameron Calderaro, Kieran Calderaro, Collin Falletta, Samantha Ferrara, Dylan Quinn, Mary Saporito, Faith Schaefer and Michael Spinella. Manor Students Go On A Global Journey A global journey for Seaford Manor Elementary School students didn’t require any overseas flights, just open minds during the annual International Week celebration from Jan. 13-17. Students from all grades participated in activities that enhanced their knowledge of other cultures. The school welcomed several guest speakers who shared their firsthand knowledge of other nations. Physical education teacher Ken Botti said it was a game of stamina and strategy, Art teacher Jamie LaSota
led students in projects inspired by her educational trip to China last year. Kindergartners used collage techniques to make lanterns, first and second graders made drawing inspiring by Ming vases, third graders dabbled in Chinese painting and fourth and fifth graders created paintings of landmarks and landscapes in China, practicing artistic techniques of perspective and value. Every student created a poster to celebrate their ancestry, identifying the countries their families hail from as well as cultural foods and traditions they enjoy.

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board has announced that the Town of Oyster Bay, in conjunction with the National Hockey League’s New York Rangers, will host a special “Try-Hockeyfor-Free Program” on Sunday, February 15th, from 9am to 11:30am, at the state-of-the-art Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage. The event will allow children, ages 5 through 9, a unique opportunity to explore the sport of ice hockey. In addition, time will be set aside for photo opportunities and autographs. “This is a great NHL program that provides local children the opportunity to explore the exciting sport of ice hockey under the watchful eye of professional,” said Supervisor Saladino. “This free session provides parents the opportunity to assess if the sport of ice hockey is a good fit for their child, without making an initial financial
commitment.” Tr y - H o c k e y - f o r- F r e e is designed for children with little or no prior skating experience. New York Rangers alumni and Junior Rangers staff will lead the one-day session, which includes free skate rentals and loaner equipment, a free Rangers hockey stick for children to take home and a postskate meet-and-greet with former professional hockey players. The program is limited to 75 participants and space is filled on a firstcome, first-serve basis. The Gluten Free Agency, which is a consulting group dedicated to helping advertisers, says some nine million people in
Canada are going gluten-free now for medical or personal reasons. Toss in the scores of people with peanut or other allergies and even more caution is needed when designing wedding menus. Savvy couples who have guests’ health and comfort in mind recognize the importance of offering a varied meal plan for wedding-related parties and receptions. The following are some ideas to consider when planning wedding menus. • Consider a buffet-style service. Although couples might like the tradition and flair that a seated/plated meal offers, it creates a much more limited selection of meal options. Buffet-style dinner service often provides couples with multiple choices, and it’s much more likely they can come up with a combination that caters to any food allergies or dietary
restrictions guests may have. • Opt for food stations. In lieu of one long buffet table, a modern approach is to have staffed food stations. Foods as well as their ingredients can be clearly stated on food table placards so guests can make appropriate choices. • Offer alternatives for dessert. Wedding cake can be a challenge to someone with a gluten sensitivity or an egg or a nut allergy. While not every guest indulges in dessert, make it a point to offer an alternative to cake. Perhaps a groom’s cake can be revamped into glutenfree cookie bars or a nut-free trifle. festivals. According to Chinese mythology, a monster named “Nian” would come about every New Year’s Eve, forcing people to hide in their homes. A brave boy fought Nian off using fireworks, and the following day the public celebrated their survival by setting off even more pyrotechnics. Fireworks became a key component of celebrations from that point forward. Some other traditions associated with the holiday include burning fake paper money and printed gold bars in honor of deceased ancestors. It is believed these offerings will bring fortune and good luck to ancestors in the afterlife. Other customs include cleaning homes

Such activities may include hair cutting, using scissors and other sharp objects, arguing, saying unlucky words, or breaking things. The red color was purported to be instrumental in scaring away Nian and bringing about luck. Another component of Chinese New Year is the Chinese zodiac. One animal represents the entire year, and there are 12 different animals. The animal a person is born
under can help decide his or her career, health and relationship status. 2020 is the year of the Rat. The Rat is associated with wealth and surplus and also is known to be a clever, quick thinker. The Rat is successful, but content to live a peaceful life. The Chinese believe your ben ming nian, or the year of your zodiac animal, is the unluckiest for you because it is a rebirth year and a time when children can easily be taken by evil spirts. Wearing red all year is a defense against this. Those born in 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, and 2008 are all born under the Rat. Chinese New Year is a spectacle that Chinese and non-Chinese alike can behold.
