What’s The Plan? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am a person who thrives on plans, on knowing precisely what the schedule entails, time frames, routes, weather forecasts, the whole bit. So when these plans, inevitably, fall apart at the seams, it’s more than a bit frustrating. I mention this point because, in the span of the last 24 hours, I have had about seven potential “happenings” fall through, some even before they had the opportunity to be properly formulated. I know, I know, get over it, be

spontaneous, blah blah… well, for some, this is easier said than done. Especially when the roadblocks are created through no fault of your own. From dinners with friends, to summer concert presales, to advance ticket reservations to outdoor adventures… all cancelled, on account of everything from Mother Nature, to high demand, to illness, to, well, just plain hesitancy to commit to anything so far in advance. Such a turn of events can go one of two ways – it can motivate you to forge ahead, solo, or (especially in the cold of winter)

to instead curl up and resolve to hibernate until Spring. Normally, this second option would be just fine with me; but after repeated, futile attempts to coordinate in such a short span of time… well, it’s just disappointing. A joke. A candid camera-type collection of mishaps. They say you should make the most of each day, but sometimes, it just seems that life is conspiring against this principle. I tried. I failed. I suppose I could give it another try tomorrow. Or not… how many days ‘til Spring?

The Foundation is an independent non-profit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget. For more than 40 years, Jill Rooney has been a tireless champion of children’s causes and has worked to provide highquality childcare and education, in a safe and healthy environment that promotes wellbeing. In 1973, she founded Harbor Child Care in response to the growing trend of mothers entering the workforce. Harbor was one of the first childcare centers on Long Island to be accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs. Today, Harbor Child Care has flourished into a comprehensive nonprofit agency with seven centers throughout Nassau County serving nearly 1,000 children and their families. The center uses a rigorous, research-based curriculum known as the

High Scope Cognitive Development Program. Ms. Rooney is a national trainer in High Scope, with a focus on preschool education. Beyond Harbor Child Care, Ms. Rooney has been influential in a number of causes influencing children’s welfare. She founded the Teaching Institute for Infant Care Givers, the first program to provide ongoing training for teachercaregivers of children age 0-3. More than 400 childcare providers have been trained in this program, which was the first on Long Island to offer training and certification in infant childcare. Ms. Rooney spearheaded the first countywide conference on infectious diseases in childcare settings and helped to launch the Nassau County Coalition for Child Care to increase public awareness of the need for quality community childcare. She assisted in organizing the 23-agency Task Force Against Childhood Violence and created the ongoing “Where Are the Children” campaign to
