I recently found out that my yoga studio, the one I have been frequenting for the last several years, will be closing come the end of February. Sure, there are other studios, other forms of meditation that can be explored; but this was my studio, the one I had come to regard as a sanctuary of sorts, a respite from the oftstressful daily grind. When I began taking classes there, some three or four years ago, my goal was to attend one, two – even three – sessions per week, at all different levels, in an effort to explore this newfound hobby. I had originally decided to look into the practice after
“retiring” from dancing for the previous 20 years, and determined that yoga would be the perfect combination of strength and conditioning, balance and relaxation, that I needed. Of course, my grand plans eventually dwindled down to about once a week, as I found a regular class that I loved. Every Wednesday (or as many as I could manage to make it to), I would look forward to those 75 minutes of guided technique and mental cleansing. Certainly, anyone can undertake the basic yoga stretches and breathing techniques on his/her own; but there is definitely something about a structured class which brings a whole new level to
the practice. And so, come March, I will need to find a new venue to attend, a new haven to explore this ancient ritual, which has so very many benefits in the modern world. How glad I am that I ventured into that particular studio all those years ago, and how very appreciative I am of the community of fellow “yogis” that I have come to know and respect. Here’s hoping that I find a new home for my hobby, one as welcoming and fulfilling and full of inspiration. ‘Til then, I shall savor these remaining weeks in my old familiar studio, surrounded by familiar faces; and I shall take a deep breath and appreciate all the goodness yoga has brought to my life.
Who is Paying for the Increases? We all deal with increases in expenses all the time. We recently learned that the minimum wage was increased to $10.00 per hour in our area, and it will continue to increase to up to $15.00 per hour by 2021. These types of increases are a result of decisions from our elected officials. On the surface, many people think this is good and fair; but when you delve deeper, you may find that it might not be so good after all. All businesses, including small businesses, must now figure out a way to deal with these increased costs. They now must decide how much of these costs their business can absorb and how much must now be passed on to the consumer. Many businesses are
still dealing with the large increases in their health care costs. Many businesses will be forced to eliminate positions, as well as minimize some of their services. Ultimately, it is the consumer who will be adversely affected by all of this. Let’s all hope for better days ahead! We have an opportunity with our new administration to cut the size of government and its excessive spending and waste. We have an opportunity to limit government control and waste in many areas such as healthcare, education, student loans and social service benefits. Able Americans should be in control of their own destinies, working and earning their own way in this world, and not
being enabled to rely on government handouts which ultimately become yet another cost to all of us hard working taxpayers. Government assistance is meant for those who are truly in need of and deserving of the help. These less fortunate Americans are the only ones who should be allowed to benefit from these costly government services. So, if you find yourself having to pay more for a product or service, or you seem to be waiting longer and longer for assistance in places of business or of government service, realize where this all started, and who is paying for all the wasteful government spending. It is US, THE TAXPAYERS.

Conference Champions Seaford High School Boy’s Winter Track made history for the district this season as the first Seaford team to ever win the Winter Conference 6 Championship. The team captured the crown, January 11th at St. Anthony’s High School after scoring 101 points, defeating the runner up, Oyster Bay, by 23 points. “I am so proud of the boys’ determination and focus towards winning this championship,” said Coach Kimberly Cooke. “What I think led to this
win was a combination of their attention to detail in their practices leading up to the competition along with the leadership on the team, who kept the team on target during the meet encouraging everyone to go all out and keeping that win in sight.” Several team members won their events, making them Individual Conference Champions. They are Jason Linzer, a freshman, in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs; Anthony Cuchel, a junior, in High Jump; Andrew Saulpaugh,
a senior, in Shot Put and juniors David Mascolo, Anthony Rodman, Matt Mezzasalma and Colin Ogilvie who made up the mile relay. Four athletes placed in the top three overall in their events, making them All- Conference. They include Al Munro, a freshman, High Jump; Nick Minerva. a junior, 300 meters; John Krzyminskis, a sophomore, 3200 meters and Connor Kelly, a junior, 1000 meters.

TechDay co-founder Peter Mountanos explained that the TechDay team is comprised of district alumni who assist students in understanding the basic notions of how computers work and how they can be used. “Beyond just giving students a useful tool, we hoped to cultivate the joy and enthusiasm we ourselves feel for this rewarding approach to problem-solving,” said Mountanos, who is also a district alumnus and current board of education member. Separated into small classes based on experience level, students learned web development by using HTML, CSS and JavaScript and built their own websites, which they can continue to work on after TechDay. They also utilized Scratch and Python, the basics of coding, to make computer games. In addition, students learned Android development and built their own Android project by remaking the popular app. “Students who attended TechDay advanced their knowledge of existing and emerging computer technologies, making them better equipped for the future,” said Penny Curry, the district’s director of information systems and instructional technology.
