Mercy Soup Kitchen Seeking Volunteers It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation. Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and currently serves an average of 108 people per day. During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be

modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need. Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining was available. But today the Kitchen is posing for a postCovid reopening – a reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sitdown dining. The Kitchen relies heavily

on its generous volunteer support and, as such, numerous on-site and offsite volunteer opportunities are now available. While there are openings for on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also openings for diverse off-site positions in areas such as finance, grant development and preparation, legal compliance assurance, marketing duties, social

media facilitation and fund raising/donation coordination. Only with the efforts of its volunteers can the Kitchen succeed in its mission to provide food security to those in need. Town Urges State And Federal Governments To Help Restore South Shore Beaches

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with his colleagues in government to demand that the Federal government require the Army Corps of Engineers to develop a long-term solution to harden the shoreline at TOBAY and better protect the mainland. This week, TOBAY Beach and other south shore beaches suffered significant erosion from a winter storm. Damage includes serious dune erosion, the loss of shoreline, exposure of footings to the beach pavilion and saltwater intrusion to Ocean Parkway. “We know that the Army Corps of Engineers has the expertise to resolve this matter and we implore their

immediate assistance,” said Supervisor Saladino. “A short-term and longterm action plan must be implemented, along with the proper funding to harden our shoreline with additional sand, protect the mainland and continue to provide our residents with the beautiful south shore beaches they expect and deserve.” In recent years, Town officials have worked to help restore the beach before each summer season by scraping sand from the west end of TOBAY to the east, knowing that would be a temporary solution. Last summer, the Town purchased 33,000 tons of sand and crews worked on a daily basis to screen, clean and process sand to ensure residents were able to enjoy

their summer at the beach. As this cannot be the ultimate solution, Town officials have continued their outreach to State and Federal officials to identify solutions to help all south shore beaches facing erosion. “Following these massive storms, not only do we lose a significant amount of our beach, high tides also threaten the structural integrity of our center pavilion, as well as the dunes that protect Ocean Parkway,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We also know that our neighboring beaches are experiencing similar issues, and we implore the Army Corps of Engineers to step in immediately and help save our summers!”

board of education trustee whose son, Scott Andrews, was a Seaford basketball player. His teams have made the playoffs 22 times, won five league championships, two sportsmanship awards and a county championship in 1998 against Island Trees. He also has had three players reach the 1,000-point mark during his tenure, Michael Harrington in the 1990s and James Curley and Robert Goldstein in the 2000s. Several of his players have gone on to play at the collegiate level. “My biggest satisfaction is after my boys graduate, seeing how well they do in the real world,” Coach Rossetti said. He was a varsity player for East Meadow High School, then played at Southern State College/University of South Dakota Springfield. His primary position was shooting guard. Coach Rossetti said that adaptability has been his key to success. During his 43

Ralph Rossetti has brought a culture of winning to the Seaford varsity boys basketball program over the past four decades, as he recently notched his 400th career coaching victory. But more important to him, is fostering an environment in which his players feel valued, respected and cared for. The milestone victory came on Jan 6., a dominating 66-34 victory over East Rockaway. Coach Rossetti is in his 43rd year as the varsity coach, and led the middle school team for five years before that. He has continued to coach well past his retirement as a Seaford Middle School technology teacher. “It was the culmination of a lot of years, a big journey,” he said of his 400th win with the Vikings. “That’s what I’m most proud of, staying at one school.” Coach Rossetti was 32 when he took over the varsity squad, following a letter of recommendation from a

Young Reporters Shine A Light On Weather Students wrapped up a nonfiction writing unit that focused on extreme weather. Each group wrote a newsletter and made a PowerPoint presentation about their topic, which included earthquakes,

floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and tsunamis. As a culminating project, every group prepared a newscast about its topic. On Jan. 12, parents were invited to watch as students shared their

knowledge like they were giving a report for the six o’clock news. They took on the role of studio anchors and on-site reporters. Within the groups,

each student covered a different aspect of their natural disaster, such as causes, effects and warning signs. Ms. Hechler said that students set their

newscasts from places that could be impacted by those disasters, such as Oklahoma for tornadoes and Japan for tsunamis.
