Open SUNY State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher today announced that Stony Brook University will play a leadership role in the system’s introduction of Open SUNY, offering one of the first degree programs to be powered by this signature initiative. Stony Brook’s Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering online degree will now be offered to students with a comprehensive suite of supports and services to aid in degree completion. SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher introduced the new “Open SUNY+” degree programs during her annual State of the University Address today in Albany. “Open SUNY will provide our students with the nation’s leading online learning experience, drawing on the power of SUNY to expand access, improve completion,

and prepare more students for success,” said Chancellor Zimpher. “In addition to these new, fully-online degree programs, Open SUNY will take every online course we offer at every SUNY campus - now upwards of 12,000 course selections conducted by 7,000 faculty - and make them easy to find and accessible for every SUNY student and prospective leaners around the globe.” “We are proud of our collaboration and success in serving a qualified student population that may not otherwise be able to pursue a degree in electrical engineering,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. This is truly an exciting time to be involved in higher education in New York State.” Across New York, 6.9 million adults have a high school degree but no college degree. Many want to pursue a degree but life commitments such as jobs, children, aging parents, financial limitations, and community ties limit their access to higher education. Open SUNY aims to reach these non-traditional students as well. “Open SUNY will completely redefine access to a college degree in our state, reaching every child and adult in every school and home in New York,” added Chancellor Zimpher, “and reaching them on their terms - in their homes and communities, and on their time, adapting to their schedules.” Included as part of Open SUNY are built-in supports for students and faculty, such as 24/7 assistance for students, whether they need technical help, tutoring, financial planning, or academic advisement services; and a Center for Online Teaching Excellence where faculty can opt-in to training programs and online forums to broaden their knowledge about developing effective online courses or share best practices and learn directly from colleagues across SUNY. The eight Open SUNY+ degree programs to debut in January were chosen based on a number of factors, including student interest, accreditation, and their capacity to meet current and future workforce demand throughout New York State. Residents of New York can ring in the New Year with 10 free flowering trees by joining the Arbor Day Foundation any time during January 2014. By becoming a part of the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation, new members will receive two Sargent crabapple, three American redbuds, two Washington hawthorns and three white flowering dogwoods. “These beautiful trees will give your home in New York lovely flowers with pink, yellow and white colors,” said John Rosenow, founder and chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation.

“These trees are perfect for large and small spaces, and they will provide food and habitat for songbirds.” The free trees are part of the Foundation’s Trees for America campaign. The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting, between February 1st and May 31st, with enclosed planting instructions. Kicking Into High Gear By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Has anyone else found that the more you have to accomplish in a given period of time, the more efficiently you tend to work? Tasked with a To Do list a mile long, one that would seem insurmountable at first glance, you suddenly kick into another gear entirely, mustering the kind of motivation not seen since the days of cramming for final exams and pulling all-nighters to finish term papers. The problem is complacency. Too easily do we settle into our routines, refusing to waver in our

preconceived notions of how our days should go; how much we are required to accomplish at a minimum, rather than how much we could achieve if only we exercised our full potential. Sad to say, “good enough” is exactly just that for most people – all that they are mentally capable of reaching for. But (and this is good news), see what happens when you take on a little more. Day by day, stretch yourself a bit too thin… and you will surely begin to see just how much time is wasted on a daily basis, and how much more we can accomplish if we only

rise to the occasion. The potential is there; we need only to unlock it. Think back to the days when achievement actually meant something, when everything was a means to an end in order to reach that next level. Why should that mentality change once we “grow up” and settle into adulthood? Why shouldn’t we continue to push the boundaries of excellency, to rise through the ranks and maximize every minute we can in pursuit of perfection? Everyone has a higher gear. There’s no better time than now to tap into the reserve.

( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to

get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www.annualcreditreport. com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.

It Takes An Island Debra Markowitz and her partner, John Marean, of North Merrick always discussed amusing story lines and funny anecdotes when walking their rescue dog, Trippy. When Debra Markowitz wrote the screenplay for the short film, The Last Taxi Driver, they discussed different people who would play the roles if it ever got produced. Then Debra spoke to her filmmaker friends, and the wheels started turning. Debra Markowitz and The Majors Productions (Marc Riou of Huntington, Nugent Cantileno of Mineola, Robert La Rosa of Valley Stream, Joshua Paige of Port Jefferson Station and Carrie Ferrante of Connecticut) explored the possibility of producing this dark comedic horror film on Long Island. John Marean and his producing partner, Cecily Mihok-Trenka (Rapier Wit Films of Merrick) got involved in the production, and it became even more of a reality. Steve Sage of Steve Sage Productions (originally from Greenlawn, now of Rocky Point) jumped on the bandwagon with his Red camera. Kory Diskin (Roslyn Heights) came on as Production Designer. Regina Hardy (originally of Glen Cove, now of Hempstead) came on to assist as 2nd AD. Helene Schulman from Suffolk signed on as Set

ROBOTICS START - Island Trees High School students attended this year’s kickoff event for the 2014 FIRST Robotics Competition, sponsored by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. Hosted by Stony Brook University, they gathered with more than 40 participating high schools on Saturday, January 4th at Stony Brook University’s Jacob Javits Lecture Center for a presentation and simulcast broadcast from New Hampshire. After the presentation, each team received a kit of parts, which they will use along with other materials, to build a 120-pound robot. The teams will have six weeks to construct the robot and prepare for the upcoming competition to be held on March 27th-29th at Hofstra University.
