American Heart Association Warns Of Snow Shoveling Health Hazards The American Heart Association says that for most people, shoveling snow may not lead to any health problems. However, the association warns that the risk of a heart attack during snow shoveling may increase for some, as the combination of colder temperatures and physical exertion increases the workload on the heart. People who are outdoors in cold weather should avoid sudden exertion, like lifting a heavy shovel full of snow. Even walking through heavy, wet snow or snow drifts can strain a person’s heart. For those who are sedentary, or people with existing heart conditions like heart failure, high blood pressure or cholesterol, the increased workload on the heart from activities such as shoveling of heavy snow, can put them at higher risk for heart attack—where a clot blocks blood flow to a heart artery causing the heart muscle damage or tissue death. This is a life-threatening medical emergency. To help make snow removal safer, the American Heart Association has compiled a list of practical tips. · Give yourself a break. Take frequent rest breaks

during shoveling so you don’t overstress your heart. Pay attention to how your body feels during those breaks. · Don’t eat a heavy meal prior or soon after shoveling. Eating a large meal can put an extra load on your heart. · Use a small shovel or consider a snow thrower. The act of lifting heavy snow can raise blood pressure acutely during the lift. It is safer to lift smaller amounts more times, than to lug a few huge shovelfuls of snow. When possible, simply push the snow. · Learn the heart attack warning signs and listen to your body, but remember this: Even if you’re not sure it’s a heart attack, have it checked out (tell a doctor about your symptoms). Minutes matter! Fast action can save lives — maybe your own. Don’t wait more than five minutes to call 9-1-1. · Don’t drink alcoholic beverages before or immediately after shoveling. Alcohol may increase a person’s sensation of warmth and may cause them to underestimate the extra strain their body is under in the cold. · Consult a doctor. If you have a medical condition,

don’t exercise on a regular basis or are middle aged or older, meet with your doctor prior to the first anticipated snowfall. · Be aware of the dangers of hypothermia. Heart failure causes most deaths in hypothermia. To prevent hypothermia, dress in layers of warm clothing, which traps air between layers forming a protective insulation. Wear a hat because much of your body’s heat can be lost through your head. Heart Attack Warning Signs Some heart attacks are sudden and intense — the “movie heart attack,” where it is clear what’s happening. But most heart

New York Farm Bureau Seeking 2022 Scholarship Applicants New York high school seniors who are graduating and interested in pursuing a career in agriculture can apply for New York Farm Bureau’s Agricultural Youth Scholarship. Eligible students can use the financial award for college or advanced training in the skilled trades. Statewide winners can earn up to $3,000 towards their future education. The applicant or their family must be a New York Farm Bureau member, and the student must live and/or work a farm or be involved with agriculture

in the state. The student must also complete the application which includes writing an essay addressing what they value and stand for in agriculture and life and how these values have impacted their decision to pursue an agricultural career. Scoring will determine both county and district winners and may include a personal interview. Each district winner will receive $250 and then compete for one of two state scholarships worth $3,000 and $2,000, based on their submitted applications.

Applications must be submitted by March 1, 2022, and the judging will take place prior to April 20, 2022. Call 9-1-1 emergency medical services (EMS) for rapid transport to the emergency room and treatment when they arrive on the scene. Don’t drive yourself--have someone

drive you to the hospital right away. Heart attacks can cause sudden cardiac arrest, where the heart stops beating, or beats irregularly, failing to pump enough blood. If a victim is unresponsive, not breathing or only gasping, quick recognition and fast action are the keys to saving a life. What You Can Do Bystanders can help cardiac arrest victims survive, if they act fast. First, call 9-1-1 and start CPR right away. Then, if an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is available, use it as soon as possible. If two people are available to help, one should begin CPR immediately while the other calls 9-1-1 and finds an AED. Hands Only CPR is effective in saving lives during cardiac arrest. Hands-Only CPR has just two simple steps. If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, (1) Call 9-1-1; and (2) Push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of the disco song “Stayin’ Alive” (100 beats per minute) until help arrives. Breast Cancer Survivors Sought For Hotline Training Begins February 8 The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program seeks women and men who have had breast cancer to become hotline volunteers. The four-session takes place on consecutive Tuesdays — February 8th, 15th, 22nd and March 1st –f rom 10 am to 1 pm on zoom. This in-depth training

includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community. Attendance at all four sessions is required. For 42 years, the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program has been helping women and

leadership potential. He hopes to use knowledge gained at the conference to make an even bigger difference in his school. “I’d like to take what I learn and help my school be a better place,” he said. Faith, a member of the drama club and Model Congress, as well as vice president of the GayStraight Alliance, added, “HOBY could teach me the leadership skills necessary to bring positive change to the school. You can meet other leaders, see their successes and talk to them about what they’ve done to get here.” Ryan, who plays lacrosse, eagerly awaits the chance to meet new people who have different points of view. “I’m looking forward to learning more about how other people lead,” he said. The students added that attending the HOBY conference will be a great opportunity for personal growth and will also show their leadership potential when they apply to colleges. They also want to take what they learn and pass that knowledge on to their peers to create an entire community of strong student-leaders. Taylor Purcell, one of four students who attended the HOBY conference in 2021, was part of several interview panels to select this year’s participants. She said her questions to the candidates were mostly

The nominees were interviewed by a panel that included Seaford administrators, guidance counselors and students who attended the past two HOBY conferences. Students go to the conference as sophomores because they typically take on leadership roles in school as juniors and seniors. They will get to hear from numerous guest speakers and interact with students from across the region. “It will be good to see what it takes to be a leader, and see those qualities in other people,” said Mary, who is a member of the drama club, Model Congress and field hockey and softball teams. Luke, who plays basketball and soccer, said it means a lot to him that Seaford High School staff and other students see his

This initiative recognizes the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces – both living and deceased – who are current or former Town of Oyster Bay residents. “My Town Board colleagues and I were amazed by the outpouring of support this program received in its first year by our incredible residents, businesses and local heroes,” said Councilman Labriola. “We are proud to return this important initiative to our communities and we look forward to further recognizing our veterans, active duty service members, and their families for their commitment to defend our freedoms and democracy.” Banners bearing the

nominated individual’s name, rank, photograph and area of service will be unveiled throughout selected park facilities across the Town of Oyster Bay in the months leading up to Veterans Day in November 2022. Any interested individual or organization who would wish to sponsor a banner can remit $75 to sponsor the production of a banner. No profit is made from this program. Once the banners are displayed, the Town will maintain the banners, and will remain on display until Veterans Day, where they will then be taken down to avoid any inclement winter weather and returned to the service family or their loved ones. Those who sponsored a banner last year are reminded to submit a new

application in order to be included in the 2022 season. Applications must be received by March 11, 2022. Supervisor Saladino added, “This is an especially meaningful way to honor those who bravely and selflessly served our nation. Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington.
