Sculpture isn’t just making something out of a lump of clay in Mr. Kerr’s class. Students use near industry-standard apps to digitally sculpt their projects, which are then created on a 3D printer. In his Comic and Cartoon Illustration class, students create many of their characters free hand, then scan their drawings into the computer to add color and do other manipulations in Photoshop. “It’s important for my students to become familiar with digital art techniques because that’s what’s happening in the world right now,” he said. Mr. Kerr also teaches Studio in Art, Painting and Drawing and CDP Art, a course for students in the Life Skills program. In addition to his art classes, he is the adviser for the Radio Club, in which students use technology to create podcasts. His students noted the

creative freedom that he gives them. Some prefer to do most of a project free hand, while others rely more on digital tools. He allows them to play to their strengths as artists to complete an assignment. “We can do anything and Mr. Kerr supports us,” junior Anastasia Perlegis said, adding that he is very clear and thorough in his explanations for using different software and programs. He was nominated for the award by Debbie Langone, Seaford’s executive director of instructional technology and STEAM. In the application, she was asked to described Mr. Kerr in three words and chose “innovative, creative, kind.” “Mr. Kerr was selected as our Bright Light because of his kind, positive energy, creative support for students as individuals, and innovative integration of technology into his art classes,” she said. “As

adviser of Seaford’s Radio Club, he allows students to take the lead and be the driving force of their own productions.”

Mr. Kerr said he shares the honor with his fellow art teachers, noting that technology integration is a strength of the art

department. “For a small school,” he said, “we use technology as good as we could for our students.”

Traditional and digital mediums come together in Michael Kerr’s art classes at Seaford High School. It is his ability to incorporate modern artistic techniques into his lessons that earned him a Bright Light award from the Association of Suffolk Supervisors for Education Technologies. Mr. Kerr and other educators from Long Island will be recognized at a Bright Lights luncheon on Jan. 17 in Farmingdale. The award recognizes educators for their extraordinary contributions in integrating technology in their schools. In a teaching career that has spanned 17 years, including 16 in Seaford, Mr. Kerr has always found ways to bring technology into art. He came to Seaford High School as a computer graphics teacher, and also taught a digital animation course. Now, he brings technology into his Comic and Cartoon Illustration and sculpture courses.

“For I Was Hungry And You Gave Me Food…” Matthew 25:35 It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation. Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and currently serves an average of 108 people per day. During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need. Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining

was available. But today the Kitchen is posing for a postCovid reopening – a reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sit-down dining. The Kitchen relies heavily on its generous volunteer support and, as such, numerous on-site and off-site volunteer opportunities are now available. While there are openings for on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also openings for diverse

off-site positions in areas such as finance, grant development and preparation, legal compliance assurance, marketing duties, social media facilitation and fund raising/donation coordination. Only with the efforts of its volunteers can the Kitchen succeed in its mission to provide food security to those in need. Please consider sharing some of your time and talents with the Kitchen to make this happen. We invite you to join our team. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announced that the Town is now accepting applications for the 2024 Hometown Heroes’ Community Recognition Program. This initiative recognizes the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces – both living and deceased – who are current or former Town of Oyster Bay residents. “My Town Board colleagues and I were

amazed by the outpouring of support this program has received from residents, businesses and local heroes,” said Councilman Labriola. “We are proud to return this important initiative to our communities and look forward to further recognizing our veterans, active duty service members, and their families for their commitment to defend our freedoms and democracy.” Banners bearing the nominated individual’s

name, rank, photograph and area of service will be unveiled throughout selected park facilities across the Town of Oyster Bay in the months leading up to Veterans Day in November. Any interested individual or organization who would wish to sponsor a banner can remit $75 to sponsor the production of a banner. No profit is made from this program. Once the banners are displayed, the Town will maintain the banners, and will remain on display until Veterans

Day, where they will then be taken down to avoid any inclement winter weather and returned to the service family or their loved ones. Those who sponsored a banner last year are reminded to submit a new application in order to be included in the 2024 season. Applications must be received by March 15, 2024. Supervisor Saladino added, “This is an especially meaningful way to honor those who bravely and selflessly served our nation.
