LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!
“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.
After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me
that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. If you are interested in coming with a group to a Food Outreach event or are interested in volunteering at a Youth Outreach Event, please call their office at 631.758.7584 first for more information.

Rise Above We all have our obstacles, the daily struggles we try to overcome in an effort to be our best selves, to live our best lives, to reach whatever pinnacle of fulfillment possible. They say you should never compare your journey with anyone else’s, or look to compete in such a category. To each, his or her own; live and let live, and every other cliché in the book. There are times when this is more difficult than others, of course. Moments when the inclination is to reach out, to try to repair, to take on responsibility for things which we bare none. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to chart a course, to find the way that leads to that which they are seeking. In that, no one else can intercede. This topic comes to me in looking back over the last year and noting that the greatest

realization was in accepting that certain people will never change, will never become what you wish them to be, will never react in the way you have determined to be most appropriate; these expectations are simply unrealistic, and an almost guaranteed recipe for disappointment. Along the same vein, the topic of my favorite weekly podcast happened to coincide in discussing the process of being able to manage anticipation in such a way as to not have your psyche completely crushed if they don’t happen to be met. It focused on envisioning your ideal situation, enjoying it in the context of something hopeful on the horizon - and then letting it go and accepting the current context for what it is, being in the moment and choosing a constructive way to deal with it.
Easier said than done, to be sure. But such is the essence of life. If there were no obstacles, where would the satisfaction be in overcoming them? How would we even know if we were moving forward, or simply existing in complacency, never striving for something better? I know, most readers would probably prefer that level of contentment; but reality is seldom this simple. And so, we press on - minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year… until someday, at some point in time, we look back to realize that we have, in fact, accomplished quite a bit by simply being able to rise above and persevere. As different as the individual journeys may be, I think it’s safe to say this is a common goal. Here’s to smoother paths ahead.
Nassau BOCES renamed the building that houses its music and theatre programs at the Long Island High School for the Arts’ (LIHSA) in honor of the mother of legendary musician and Long Island native Billy Joel. The Rosalind Joel Conservatory for Music and Theatre was dedicated in late December at the art school’s Syosset campus. Rosalind Nyman Joel was born on February 15th, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York, to Philip and Rebecca Nyman, who had emigrated from England. In a 1942 student musical production at City College of New York, she met Howard Joel, a German immigrant whose family had escaped Nazi Germany in 1939. World War II would interrupt

Exploring Robotics Students learn engineering and programming skills, and also understand how robots interface with computers. They have to work together to program their robots to perform certain tasks, which requires problemsolving and critical thinking skills. Typically, each student in the group takes the lead on a certain task, such as building and programming, but it requires collaboration among the entire to team to have success. “The students work collaboratively as they are able to figure out realworld solutions,” said Mr.
Heyanka, adding that he enjoys seeing those “wow” moments when their robots work. The other half of the full-year technology program is a traditional shop class. Mr. Heyanka explained that by making robotics a mandatory part of the technology curriculum, it gives all students an introduction to the field and a chance to possibly find their passion. He said he hopes it sparks an interest so they will take advantage of robotics courses and extracurricular activities at Seaford High School.

Spellers Test Their Mettle The top six spellers from Seaford Manor Elementary School competed on January 8th to represent the school at the regional competition of the National Scripps Spelling Bee in March. Fourth-grader Caroline Martorana was the winner after spelling
the word “correctional,” and will compete at Hofstra University in March. The runner-up was fifth-grader Tony Guzman. Competitions were held in each fourth- and fifthgrade classroom prior to the holiday break. One winner from each class
moved on to the schoolwide spelling bee. In addition to Caroline and Tony, finalists included fourthgraders Valerie Martin and Samantha Sinclair, and fifth-graders Kylie Meehan and Emily Scimeca. The spelling bee was organized by teacher Lauren Vegessi.

Young engineers at Seaford Middle School are getting a head start on possible careers in the growing robotics field. This year, a new half-year robotics course was launched for all eighth-grade students, which helps fulfill the middle school technology requirement. Technology teacher Brian Heyanka said that the students work in groups using Vex IQ kits to build more than a halfdozen robots throughout the semester. The robots are equipped with smart sensors to interact with their surroundings.

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s (GSNC) Board of Directors announces that Randell (Rande) Marie Bynum has been appointed as the Council’s newest Chief Executive Officer (CEO) following the recent retirement of former GSNC CEO Donna Ceravolo. Bynum, a third generation
Girl Scout, brings decades of experience enhancing the efforts of nonprofit organizations. Her work includes the Girl Scouts of Nassau County and the Girl Scouts of USA, private corporations and media entities with a focus on education, community engagement and youth
empowerment. “Rande embodies the spirit of a G.I.R.L [Gogetter, Innovator, RiskTaker, and Leader], and the Girl Scouts of Nassau County is delighted to welcome Rande as our new CEO,” said Wanda Jackson, President of GSNC’s Board of Directors. “After conducting a nationwide search, we are confident that Rande will be a terrific fit to lead our Council. Her years of experience and leadership abilities within nonprofit organizations including the Girl Scouts of Nassau County and Girl Scouts of the USA combined with her passion for empowering young girls will be a vital asset to us.” Prior to joining the Girl Scouts of Nassau County, Bynum served as independent contractor at PwC Charitable Foundation. Bynum was
also the senior director of outreach and partnerships at Sesame Workshop, where she managed all engagement activities for Sesame Workshop’s The Electric Company. In addition, she was also the publishing director of family and community engagement at Scholastic Inc. She received a Master of Social Work with concentrations in program planning, administration and research from Stony Brook University and also holds a B.A. from Binghamton University. Earlier in her career, Bynum was the Director, Program and Adult Development at the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. She also worked at the Girl Scouts of the USA, where she was responsible for the implementation of The Dove Self-Esteem Fund corporate partnership and the development of the Girl
Scout/Dove Self-Esteem Program. In her role at the Girl Scouts of the USA, she co-authored the acclaimed workbook Dove’s True You! -Sometimes I Feel Ugly and Other Truths About Growing Up. “I am thrilled to be back at GSNC as your new CEO and delighted to see how this Council has grown and changed,” said Bynum. “Over the last 25 years, I have been fortunate to work with the Girl Scouts of Nassau County and Girl Scouts of the USA, in addition to other organizations focused on empowering youth and bringing families closer together. I believe girls thrive by having a place to build courage, confidence and character where they can learn skills that will last a lifetime.” Girl Scouts of Nassau County is the preeminent organization serving the

The council has current membership of nearly 23,000 – 17,900 girls, 5,000 valued adult volunteers, and a staff of 65 full and part-time employees. Officers Sworn In On Tuesday January 9th, Legislator Sunderman had the honor of swearing in the Officers of the Long-Island ABATE. There are fourteen board members, two of which were newly elected members.
