The YMCA of Long Island is a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Students in the Seaford School District made it their mission to spread joy this holiday season by collecting toys for children across Long Island. The Seaford High School student council held its annual toy drive with participation from the entire community. In addition to placing toy donation bins at the high school and middle school for students and staff to make contributions, the student leaders dropped off letters to homes in Seaford shortly after Thanksgiving seeking toys. Then on Dec. 15, volunteers from the student council and National Honor Society drove around on their assigned routes and picked

up the donations. Student council members spent two days wrapping toys afterschool before visiting Head Start facilities in Hempstead, Wantagh and Westbury. At those three spots, they dressed up as Santa, Mrs. Claus and elves to fulfill wishes for young children. Hailey Galison, vice president of the student council, said every child received a toy, a stuffed animal, a book and a trinket. Extra toys were provided to a half-dozen other child care facilities on Long Island. When she was in middle school, Hailey made would donate to the toy drive, but she said it is more meaningful now that she

gets to go to the Head Start facilities, meet the children and personally hand out gifts. Added student council president Katelyn Winter, “You get to see where your donations are going. It shows us how much of an impact we can have, not just in Seaford but in the surrounding communities.” Seaford Manor Elementary School’s student council also held its annual toy drive in December for the John Theissen Children’s Foundation in Wantagh. Donations of new, unwrapped toys benefitted less fortunate kids on Long Island as well as those spending the holidays in the hospital.

New Signs Celebrate Seaford Cheerleaders

Since cheerleading became a competitive sport in the 2016-17 school year, the Seaford High School varsity squad has continued to dominate. The team won county championships in its first three seasons and recently received signs to mark these titles. Nassau County Legislator Steve Rhoads gifted the three signs to the cheerleading squad during an afterschool ceremony on Dec. 19, one for each of its Large Varsity Division II championships in 2017, 2018 and 2019. On hand to celebrate were members of the three title-winning teams including current

students and graduates, as well as coach Lisa Ferrari, Superintendent Dr. Adele Pecora, High School Principal Scott Bersin and Assistant Principals Jennifer Bisulca and Nicole Schnabel, Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics Kevin Witt, and parents. In addition to the county championships, the team has earned fourth-, fifthand third-placed finishes, respectively, in its three trips to the state competition. Cheerleaders are active during two high school sports seasons, as they cheer at varsity football games in the fall and

compete in the winter. Mr. Witt said that cheerleaders must have tremendous work ethic and discipline, skills that will help them succeed in the future. Dr. Pecora noted the complexity of athleticism required to be a cheerleader. In his congratulatory remarks to past and present members of the squad, Legislator Rhoads said that cheerleading is the “ultimate team sport.” He added that Seaford’s team is a tremendous source of pride for the community and part of what makes it a special place.

Town Accepting New Applications For 9/11 Walls Of Honor Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that applications are now available for families to add the names of loved ones to the Town of Oyster Bay’s 9/11 Walls of Honor which recognize all those with a connection to the Town who gave their lives and succumbed in their battle against 9/11 related cancers and illness. Each year, the Town inscribes into the Walls of Honor the names of family members, friends and neighbors lost to this toxic legacy. Supervisor Saladino stated, “We remember and give thanks to those who ran into danger in order to help the victims of a cowardly act of terror. This includes first responders, downtown workers, residents, students and so many others with cancer certified to be 9/11-related.

The events of 9/11 continue to take our heroes and survivors – and members of our community will continue to face darker days ahead. We watch each week as more of these heroes pass, in an ever-increasing and unending number. Just as many of these rescue and recovery heroes raced to the Towers the first minute the plane hit, and stayed until the last brick was turned, their memorial stands with and lead us to those we lost that tragic Tuesday morning.” Reports from the World Trade Center Health program indicate that we are approaching a terrible milestone, in which approximately 43,000 people are being treated for medical problems and nearly 10,000 people have suffered cancers linked to the

toxic exposure at Ground Zero. More than 2,500 responders and others affected have succumbed to their illness. The 9/11 Walls of Honor were constructed under an initiative led by Supervisor Saladino, the Town Board and a volunteer committee that includes retired FDNY EMS Lieutenant Bill Gleason, Retired NYPD Detective Tom Luberto, Deacon Dave White, Jericho Fire Commissioner Frank Sammartano, North Massapequa Fire Commissioner Ralph Raymond, Massapequa Fire Commissioner Justin McCaffrey and Rescue & Recovery Worker Joseph Pinto. Number Mats Motivate Math mats are the newest tool at Seaford Manor Elementary School to get students excited about numbers. Assistant Principal Mary Ellen Kakalos said that the mats, funded through and educational grant from Lowe’s, promote movement in math. The mats can be moved to different classrooms to support lessons on a wide variety of mathematical

concepts. Fourth grade teacher Jill Egan’s students recently used a math to improve their multiplication skills. Students could hop around to memorize their multiplication tables, up to 10 x 10. Fifth graders in Andrea Provenzano’s class used a different mat to understand decimals and place values. The numbers spanned from one-thousandth to

Paws Of War Helps American Soldiers Bring Home Dogs Being deployed to Afghanistan can be dangerous and stressful for our service members. Some of these service members rescue stray dogs and befriend them. When it’s time to head back to the United States, the last thing they can think of is leaving the dog behind to fend for itself. One soldier, Sgt. Dominick, is desperate to bring his dog, Jonsey, back home with him. “After these dogs are rescued, they develop a special bond with our service members. These dogs will not leave their side and become very attached and loyal,” explains Dori Scofield co-founder of Paws of War. “There’s no way they can leave them, so we do everything we can to help them bring the dog home with them. We need all the support we can get from the public in order to be successful with these efforts.” Army Sgt. Dominick, who is stationed in a remote area

of Afghanistan, first spotted Jonsey when the starving puppy was eating burnt trash outside of his camp. He took the puppy in, fed him, and the whole unit fell in love with him, which brought them joy. He named him Jonsey, and the dog grew to feel like a part of his family. Now that he will be heading back to the United States, he can’t bear to leave him behind. Stray dogs in Afghanistan have a very rough life and often times are subjected to cruelty. Desperate to bring him back home with him to live out his life and be a part of his larger family, he turned to Paws of War for assistance. The organization has a program in place that helps service members bring their dog home after being deployed to the Middle East. While they are always quick to help do what they can, they can’t do it alone. In order for Paws of War to be successful at bringing

a dog back to America from Afghanistan, they work with Nowzad, the only official animal shelter in Afghanistan, and get financial support from public donations.
