Qualifying Tournaments Creativity and science will come together beginning in January as FIRST® Tech Challenge teams, comprised of students age 12 to 18, along with their mentors, will demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community. More than 46,000 students in almost 20 countries will program robots to compete on a 12-foot by 12-foot field in an alliance format against other teams. Robots are built from a reusable platform, powered by Android technology and programmed using Java. The FIRST Long Island Qualifiers will be held as follows: • Sunday, January 15th, 2017 at Center Moriches High School • Saturday, January 28th, 2017 at Syosset High School Awards that will be given include: • Inspire Award: team that best exemplifies the spirit of FIRST Tech Challenge

Students to be Honored The LIU Post Art Department will honor three students from local high schools across Nassau and Suffolk Counties at the awards ceremony for “Advanced Visions 13: High School Artists of Excellence,” to be held at the University’s Hutchins Gallery on January 25th, 2017. All of the participating students were selected by their teachers to represent their high schools in the exhibition. The exhibition recognizes the superior work being done by high school students in Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Portfolio Preparation art programs across Long Island and is on view through January 25th,
2017. Three students are recognized with Juror’s Awards. Maria Mancz, a student from Division Avenue High School earned an award for her mixed media piece, “Old Man and The Sea”. Ms. Mancz’s art teacher is Timothy Ryan. Maria Anania from Farmingdale High School earned an award for her pen and ink piece, “Withering Youth.” Ms. Anania’s art teacher is Regina Nicholas. Ricky Vargas from Valley Stream South High School earned an award for his graphite piece, “Restraining Hatred.” Mr. Vargas’s art teacher is Ed Lee. “This year’s work is an excellent example of a wide selection of media,”
said the coordinator of the exhibition, LIU Post adjunct professor of art Cristina Lomangino, “yet there is a coincidental and beautiful content theme in many pieces. It was only after a recent conversation with a friend that I realized I don’t read nearly as often as I used to, or would like to … ever, really. delighted in broadening my horizons. College was much of the same, with special emphasis on those deeper philosophical texts, followed by detailed term papers analyzing each word and phrase and my interpretation of them. Leisurely, perhaps not; but the academic appreciation for such historical works was certainly not lost on me. Since then – in the last decade or so – I can probably count the number of books I have actually read cover to cover. That’s not to say I haven’t attempted a few series from time to time – namely, the five-part Game of Thrones collection – only to fall off track and wind up rereading those very same pages I pored over just a few
months back. As it is, I barely manage to skim through my Rolling Stone subscription, and that only after it is several months outdated. My hometown library card has long since expired, and I have yet to set foot in my new local one in the four years since I moved. Aside from the occasional Barnes & Noble purchase, my book collection has remained status quo. I wouldn’t call reading more a “resolution,” exactly, but it is something I would very much like to invest more time in. Even one book per month would be a vast improvement at this point. And, this time, there will be no term papers due upon completion.

Granting a Wish Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District continued its long-standing partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation by donating more than $5,000 to the local chapter to fulfill a child’s wish. The fundraising effort began with a walkathon in November, led by sixthgrade teacher and Student Council adviser Don Bresnihan. It culminated with the Make-A-Wish Holiday Concert on Dec. 23, with the band, orchestra and chorus performing
an array of holiday music before ending with a group singalong. After the concert, students returned to their classrooms to vote on which child’s wish they would like to support. They chose to assist 11-yearold Sean, who is battling cancer and wants to have a big party. Gail Monaco, representing the local Make-A-Wish chapter, was on hand to receive a check for $5,688, raised by Lockhart students and staff. She spoke about the
organization’s work and presented the school with a commemorative plaque to mark the 28th year of the partnership. “This is an incredible amount of money raised by our little school community,” said Principal Stephen Scarallo. “To help grant the wish of a child with a life-threatening medical condition, and to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy, is what motivates and inspires the students at Lockhart Elementary School.”

On December 16th, Sons of AMVETS Post 48 Members transported toys to the Navy Operational Support Center for the children of Navy Military Personnel located in Farmingdale. The Post 48 Sons held a raffle to help support this toy drive. Once the funding was in place they shopped for the toys and gathered together on December 14th to wrap the gifts. During January, Cervical Health Awareness Month, the Nassau University Medical Center wants to spread the word that cervical cancer is preventable and highly treatable if found early. Being screened for cervical cancer with a Pap test is the key to prevention and survival. Screening is available to both insured and uninsured women. “The New York State Cancer Services Program provides free cervical cancer screening to uninsured women a subpopulation of women less likely to get screened,” said Dr. Victor F. Politi, NuHealth/ NUMC’s President/ CEO. “According to the most recent New York State data, about 65% of women without insurance have had a Pap test within the past three years, compared to roughly 85% of women with health insurance.” “It’s wonderful that with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act so many more New York women have gained insurance and can access cervical cancer screening, but the fact remains that there are people who are still uninsured,” added Dr. Politi. “The Cancer Services Program is here to provide life-saving cancer screening to our most needy residents.” The New York State Cancer Services Program provides free cervical cancer screening to uninsured women, ages 40 and older, in every county and borough of the state. The program also provides free breast and colorectal cancer screening to eligible New York State residents. There usually aren’t any symptoms of cervical cancer in its earliest, most treatable stage, making regular Pap tests the key to an early diagnosis. “It is especially important for women who have never had a Pap test or those who haven’t had one within the past five years to get screened. More than half of all cervical cancers occur in women who have never received a Pap test

Dinner Supports Gardens Old Westbury Gardens recently hosted its Annual December Dinner, the organization’s marquis fundraising event that brings together a renowned group of inspiring community members interested in maintaining Long Island’s rich history and traditions. The event, hosted by this year’s December Dinner Chairpersons Robert and Deb Hussey of Garden City, was held in the historic Red Ballroom and West Porch of Westbury House to recreate the holiday celebrations as
imagined in the early 20th century for an exclusive and extraordinary holiday experience. “Dining in a room that holds so much history and nostalgia was truly a unique experience for all who attended,” said Robert Hussey, Co-Chair of the December Dinner. “Complete with the historic Christmas decorations that lined the mantle and the rest of the room, it was like being transported through time. We are so grateful to those who took the time
to participate in this event and for their generosity to ensure that this fundraising event helped to preserve the future of Old Westbury Gardens for years to come.” During this year’s Annual December Dinner, renowned preservationist and Old Westbury Gardens Board Trustee Dick Gachot was honored for his long-term support for Old Westbury Gardens.
