The YMCA of Long Island is a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors,

A large floor map of New York State and surrounding areas helped seventh graders at Seaford Middle School gain a better understanding of the American Revolution. The activity focused on the British three-pronged plan to capture Albany, control the Hudson River and separate New England from the middle states.
Social studies teacher Dan Hayden said use of the map helped students visualize the plan the British developed. After accurately choosing Albany as the military objective, students acted as the British generals Burgoyne and St. Leger to converge on Albany, with General Howe heading south to capture the American
capital of Philadelphia. The young historians also learned about other notable battlegrounds including Fort Stanwix where General St. Leger was defeated and Saratoga where General Burgoyne’s army faced the Continental Army at Saratoga.
