SUNY College at Old Westbury has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the seventh consecutive year. The Honor Roll recognizes institutions of higher education that support exemplary community service programs and raise the visibility of effective practices in campus community partnerships. During the past year, Old Westbury students have completed over 16,000 hours of service to various local organizations. “As part of our mission, we believe in integrating the classroom and the community,” said College President Calvin O. Butts, III. “By receiving this award, we are inspired to continue our commitment to servicelearning and lifelong civic engagement.” Honor Roll honorees

are chosen based on a series of selection factors, including the scope and innovation of service projects, the extent to which service-learning is embedded in the curriculum, the school’s commitment to longterm campus-community partnerships, and measurable community outcomes as a result of the service. Old Westbury was again recognized for its First Year Student Engagement program, an initiative of the College’s Community Action, Learning and Leadership Program. Through the Old Westbury program, freshman students are required to study the importance of civic engagement in their own lives and in the life of a community. Then, they are each required to take part in 50 hours of service with pre-selected regional

All Aboard Kindergarten classrooms at Wantagh Elementary School and first-grade classrooms at Mandalay Elementary School were abuzz with a variety of activities on two separate Polar Express Days. Dressed in pajamas, the students had their tickets punched, boarded the proverbial train and listened eagerly to the reading of Chris Van Allsburg’s popular tale

“The Polar Express” about an old-fashioned steam train that takes children to the North Pole to see Santa off on his annual sleigh ride. At Wantagh, the students decorated bells after an English language arts activity that studied words that rhymed with “bell.” They created paper trains, wrote a sentence about their voyage and even crafted a cup of hot

chocolate. At Mandalay, the students made a Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer sandwich out of bread, cream cheese, pretzels, strawberries and raisins. They crafted decorations out of buttons and completed word searches and word mazes, as well as a connect-the-dots train. The afternoon ended with a cup of hot chocolate to keep the cold away.

The Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Catholic Committee on Scouting in conjunction with Christ the King RC Church hosted an International Peace Light Ceremony and concert featuring the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah on Sunday, December 14th. Reverend Joseph Davanzo welcomed everyone. Approximately 300 people attended the service including Scouts and Scouters from Nassau and Suffolk County in addition to the parishioners of Christ the King R.C. Church and many from across Long Island. The Messiah portion featured a full orchestra and soloists. The service concluded with the “Hallelujah” Chorus. Refreshments and fellowship followed. Peace Light started in Austria in the late 1980’s. The “Peace Light” campaign was originally organized by the Austrian Broadcasting Co. and is still part of a great charitable mission for

handicapped children and people in need. Each year, a child from Upper Austria fetches the light - a live flame- from the Grotto of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. The light is then transported to Vienna,

Austria under the auspices of the International Scouting Movement and distributed throughout Europe. In recent years it has also been brought to the United States. The

Student Spotlight GIVING BACK TO OTHERS Over the Christmas holiday, I had a wonderful opportunity to help sick children who were in need. My sisters and I made gift bags and homemade Christmas cards to send to children in Africa. We made two groups of bags, one set for girls, one set for boys. The girls’ bags contained nail polish, toiletry items, coloring books, crayons and stuffed animals. The boys’ bags contained hot wheel cars, toiletry items, coloring books and stuffed animals. The gifts that we made were sent out to Ghana, Africa a couple of weeks ago. The children in Africa got their gifts on Christmas Day. The organization that transported the gift bags and

FOCOS helps children in Africa who are diagnosed with scoliosis, which is a severe curvature of the spine. I enjoyed this volunteer effort. Another volunteer effort I participated in during the week leading up to Christmas was putting together food baskets for people in need. I volunteer at the Zion Gospel Food Pantry on a monthly bases. Our pantry serves people in need 52 weeks a year. We double our donation efforts during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Our food pantry is a designated pick-up

aim of the Peace Light is to bring people the light and the Peace Message, which encourages everyone, especially Scouts, to actively create peace in their own environment and communities During the weeks before Christmas, Scouts distribute the light to now more than 30 European countries. In recent years it has also been brought to the United States through the generosity of Austrian Airlines, and the cooperation of the Brooklyn Catholic Committee on Scouting and the Greater New York Council. This year it is being shared throughout the United States and Canada, and is even being brought to Mexico and South America. In past years the Peace Light has been presented to Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, Mikhail Gorbachev, King Hussein of Jordan, members of the European parliament in Strasbourg, and the United Nations Troops in Kosovo. In December 2001 it was brought to Ground Zero. The International Peace Light is a worldwide symbol of peace and brotherhood. The light is given from one person to another as a gift with the wish for peace and forgiveness among all human beings. W o r l d w i d e , communities seeking international friendship and peace is a special concern of all Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, here and abroad. Wantagh High School’s National Honor Society inducted 97 new members during a traditional candlelighting ceremony in the auditorium. The evening featured words of wisdom from administrators and staff, musical interludes by the high school’s string chamber ensemble and the singing of the National Anthem by Kayla Knight. Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg noted that the inductees have made choices and sacrifices to reach this pinnacle of success, and challenged the students to continue on this path of achievement. “The challenge is not to rest on your laurels,

but to strive to achieve loftier goals,” she said. Principal Carolyn Breivogel congratulated the inductees for living out the tenets of the National Honor Society, while keynote speaker and science teacher Odysseas Svolos said these students have always impressed him. “The potential these students gain from their education will serve them well long after they leave us,” he said. NHS recording secretary Nikoleta Mountanos and trustees Brent Kavaler, Christine Parola and Melissa Steen lit the ceremonial candles, representing the tenets of scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship, prior to the induction of

new members. With the candles lit, the inductees were asked by Co-Vice Presidents John Casella and Zachary Diaks to raise their right hand and recite the National Honor Society Pledge before being called to the stage to receive their certificates. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
