Seaford Collects Toys For Lots Of Girls And Boys middle school added to supply of gifts. Once the toys were collected and wrapped, the student council then put together a Santa bag for each child. It included toys from his or her personal wish list as well as candy canes, coloring books, crayons, story books, stocking stuffers and a personalized letter from Santa. The bags were delivered to Head Start on Dec. 22 and additional toys were provided to Head Start in Westbury and Mercy First in Syosset. “It’s a time to be grateful for what we have and give a little bit back for people who don’t have as much,” said high school student council Vice President Shaye Castillo, who has helped out with the toy
drive for four years. “It’s all about giving and it makes me so happy to be able to do this.” President Emma Masie and Secretary CareyJean Block, of the middle school’s student council, said it is especially important to give in a year when many more people are facing financial struggles, due to the pandemic. In addition to the toy drive, the middle school and high school clubs also partnered up for a Thanksgiving food collection. “It helps people who aren’t as fortunate,” Emma said. “They deserve the chance to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas and be happy.”

The generosity of students and staff at Seaford High School and Seaford Middle School will make dozens of children happy this holiday season. The annual student council toy drive was a success with hundreds of items collected for children on Long Island. The toy drive, coordinated by members of the high school student council with assistance from their counterparts at the middle school, fulfilled wishes for 90 children in six classes at the Head Start Early Childhood Development center in Hempstead. Seaford High School classes, clubs and teachers fulfilled the wishes from the “Dear Santa” letters, and toy collection boxes at the

Sometimes the things we don’t expect and haven’t prepared for turn out to be the most lifechanging experiences. Angels of Long Island is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that somewhat formed itself back in 2015. Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Six years ago these two ladies knew of someone in need of clothing and simply wanted to see if they could be of help. They decided to start a Facebook group in hopes of spreading the word and receiving donations for this person in need. They posted a message and went on with their day, later checking in to find themselves overwhelmed with the response. Whoever doubts that there aren’t people with good hearts that are willing to help a neighbor in need is wrong, fortunately! Debbie and Brittany named the Facebook group Angels of Long Island and members would post about ways they could help others in crisis on Long Island. The group continued to gain in momentum and members, so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/ donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience. I did not expect to be running a thriving non-profit organization that has a
storefront on Long Island and helps so many in need when I made that Facebook group years ago. What has come since that group was formed is truly a miracle.” The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which is located at 350-23 East Main Street. Angels of Long Island typically holds many outreach events during the year such as a Back to School Drive, Thanksgiving Assistance, a Coat Drive, Christmas Help and more. However, due to the pandemic they aren’t holding all of these outreach events. Ones that are held are designed with safety in mind. This past December the charity held a huge Christmas Help outreach event, where many people in need were able to come to an outdoor event and children could choose up to five gifts along with grabbing hats, gloves and scarves. Then their entire family could choose from tasty food items to bring home for a Christmas meal, along with being able to shop for other food items to bring home. All of this was free of charge to the children and families who participated. There are many ways you can help out with Angels of Long Island and there is much more to write about. Senior Submits Research To Science Competition A Seaford High School senior has submitted her research on the study of bison to a national science competition. Marissa McCandless entered her project, “The Association Between Hunting and the Feeding Time of American Bison” into the 2021 Regeneron Science Talent Search. Marissa, a second-year student in the science research program, conducted her research and data analysis from June through November. Her initial interest came after contacting a professor
at Hofstra University who was doing similar research. She choose her specific topic after doing online research and learning that the connection between hunting and feeding time had not been extensively studied. Over the summer, Marissa’s mentor, who was doing his own field research, recorded bison for her at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North Dakota and Snowcrest Ranch in Montana. The videos served as the primary source for her analysis and
conclusions. In addition to a 15-page research paper, Marissa also had to fill out a lengthy application and answer essay questions. “I’m happy with my research paper,” she said. “After working on it for so many months, I was glad to finally to submit it.” She is continuing her study of bison in her science research class, with support from teachers Janine Cupo and Mary Simons, and consultant Richard Kurtz. Marissa is looking to expand her data collection to look at the relationship between
bison vigilance and feeding time. Last year, her class research project focused on the effects of probiotics on the ethanol withdrawal symptoms in planaria. Marissa said she enjoys science research not only because of her own desire to learn, but because she wants to find the “unknown knowledge.” She hopes to continue doing research in college, specifically through a laboratory internship, and aspires to be a veterinarian. Regeneron semifinalists are expected to be announced in early 2021.
