When Ms. Nielsen got to CHI, she was homeless, nine months sober, and traveling almost daily by bus to Stony Brook Hospital to care for her premature baby girl, who remained in the NICU for three months. She also has a son who was one year old, at the time, and daughter, then 10. From emergency housing in Middle Island, CHI accepted her into the agency’s transitional housing in a home in East Patchogue. Due to the lack of permanent housing, CHI extended her lease at that home for almost two years, enabling Ms. Nielsen to care for her children and get back on her feet. This month Ms. Nielsen and her family moved into a new home, independent of CHI. Due to the help she received at CHI, Ms. Nielsen was able to become

a cycle of dependency, as their benefits alone are insufficient to maintain stable housing and they succumb to the stress of an impossible situation, devoting all of their time to finding the rent. In supportive housing, Ms. Nielsen not only gained affordable rental housing, her case managers and social workers helped with life skills, job training, health care, and linked her to a host of other community supports that contribute to stability and independence. Funding is provided under New York State’s Homeless Housing & Assistance Program, which allows CHI to acquire and rehabilitate properties to serve homeless families and individuals. “Six years ago, I couldn’t imagine being where I am today. I can never repay CHI for the help they gave me and my family,” said Ms. Nielsen.

thanks to their efforts and assistance from the nonprofit Community Housing Innovations (CHI). Regina Nielsen and her three children moved in to their new home on December 1st, five and a half years after she and her family ended up in a CHI emergency shelter. After six months in emergency housing, Ms. Nielsen was accepted into CHI’s supportive housing program, which provided her with the tools to gain independence. Often, families with special needs become trapped in

Unfortunately, as the numbers of homeless with special needs continues to grow on Long Island, there are no easy answers to the crisis. “The number of homeless households in Nassau and Suffolk Counties increased 25% in the last three years, from 548 households in 2013 to 682 households in 2016, according to the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless.” But the victories come one family at a time. And a formerly homeless family of four will be spending their first holiday season in their new home in Mattituck,

She is excited about the road ahead. “From my CHI case managers I learned to set small goals and work my way toward them and that’s how I’ve accomplished a lot of things in the past six years,” said Ms. Nielsen. “That’s what I’ve taught my children to do too. We stick together and support one another. This growth and change starts in the home.” “I feel so grateful for my time at the CHI house in East Patchogue. I had never heard of a program like this that really turned my life around. I hope that house brings as many memories to the next family as it did for mine.”

The winner of the competition will earn $1,000 and will perform at Carnegie Hall. It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. So was the year 2016, at times. And so we bid farewell, and look ahead to 2017 with the same mix of enthusiasm and anxiety, optimism and apprehension. All years are a product of their individual months, weeks, days, hours even. Highs and lows become woven into the fabric of our being and, somehow, intertwine into yet another chapter of life. As much as the collective opinion seems to hold that this past year was one of the

most trying on record, for many reasons, I’m sure it held just as much hope and promise for others. It’s all a matter of perspective. Ultimately, each moment needs to be taken on its own, able to stand up by itself and not be compared and contrasted to the big picture. Too much focus on the future, and on things beyond our control, leads to missing those opportunities right in front of us. This is not to say that we should forgo any life plans we may have; but there is a balance. As we analyze and overthink, life marches on around us.

And so the goal, this year, should be to live, to experience, to embrace those moments swirling around us. And to savor them. Good, bad or indifferent, everything happens for a reason. We may not understand the dynamics of why, or what it may lead to down the road; but eventually, the path becomes clearer. The important thing is not to stray too far off the road in the meantime. The idealism in all of us suggests that the best is yet to come. Here’s hoping that 2017 is exactly that for everyone.

Caring For Older Adults (NAPSI)—With a growing aging population, the amount of family caregivers in the United States is also on the rise. There are nearly 45 million people who serve as a caregiver for a family member or friend who is 50 or older. Serving as a caregiver can be rewarding but difficult. The Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) Chorus recently performed with Greater Nassau Chorus (GNC) and Mineola High School Choirs as part of the GNC’s holiday concert at the school. The Girl Scouts attended a GNC rehearsal to learn from the experienced women before working together to prepare the Simon and Garfunkle song, “The 59th Street Bridge” for their performance. “We are so glad to have the opportunity to expose our girls to the expertise and leadership of these famed females’ artistic passion,” said Chief Executive Officer Donna Ceravolo. “GNC has helped to set an example for our aspiring singers, teaching them more than just singing technique, but how to be proud, independent women unafraid of following their dreams.” Formed in 1988, the Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) Chorus

She appeared alongside comic icon Kristen Wiig in the film Girl Most Likely and performed in the Radio City Music Hall production Spring Spectacular. She is a Long Island native and a graduate of Hofstra University.

Representatives from 60 colleges and other industry organizations - including all four branches of the U.S. military - met with students at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech and were impressed with what they saw. Barry Tech students explored a wide array of future college and career choices during the school’s second annual College Fair. Students prepared well ahead of time, charting which schools offer programs of interest and developing a variety of questions. They grilled the reps on relevant topics from admissions requirements and financial aid to campus housing and activities. Among the colleges and institutions represented were Alfred State College, Canton State University of New York, The Culinary Institute of America, Farmingdale State College, Hofstra University, Johnson and

Spreading Joy with Toys Students in the Seaford Harbor and Manor elementary schools are doing their part to brighten the holidays for children in need. Hundreds of toys were collected, bagged and delivered to the

John Theissen Children’s Foundation in Wantagh, which distributes them to sick and less-fortunate children. The toy drives were led by the Student Council in each school over the

course of a few weeks. Students said they were thrilled to see so many of their classmates donate toys and that it was “a great feeling knowing that we are making kids happy during the holidays.”

Hundreds of children in the area will have a brighter holiday season, thanks to the efforts of the secondary students in the Seaford School District. The Seaford High School Student Council collected more than 1,000 items to spread cheer to youngsters. Advised by Shari Raduazzo and Tania Cintorino, students led a donation drive in school and around the community, something they’ve done for the past few years. The council sent a letter to each household in Seaford asking if they could leave a toy on their stoop for children in need. The Council members went around the neighborhood collecting all the donations. Once all the toys were collected, the Student Council met for several hours after school to wrap all the toys. “This year, students from the Career Development

Program assisted with the gift wrapping as a way to help develop their life skills,” Cintorino said. “It was wonderful.” Students delivered the toys to preschoolers at the Hempstead and Westbury Head Start programs and to a preschool program run through Nassau County Family and Children’s Services. Toys were also sent to foster kids at Hope for Youth in Amityville and to children at MercyFirst, an orphanage in Syosset. “[Coordinating the drive] can be very stressful, but it’s so worth it,” said Seaford High School Student Council President Kristina Bouretis. “Seeing the look on the kids’ faces is amazing. Being involved with this makes me more grateful for the things I have.” Bouretis said the students take field trips to the Head Start programs.

They dress as elves and one student plays Santa Claus. “The students form an arc,” Cintorino explained. “They give out cards and candy canes and ask the students what they want for Christmas. The elves then whisper what they want to each other until it gets back to Santa. Then each child is given their toy, a stuffed animal, a book and a trinket. The students also sing holiday songs with the youngsters and spend time getting to know them. It is just a wonderful experience for everyone.” Seaford Middle School Student Council, advised by Melissa Levine, also collected numerous toys that were bagged and transported to Seaford High School, which added them to their collection for distribution.

Riding the Polar Express The magical story of ‘The Polar Express’ was reenacted at Seaford Manor Elementary School as kindergartners and their teachers, dressed in pajamas and robes, boarded a simulated version of the famous train that was set up in the school hallway.

The youngsters had their tickets punched by the conductor, played by Principal Debra Emmerich, and, with lights dimmed, and a large screen displaying the train’s snowy journey, they “traveled” to the North Pole in search of the spirit

of Christmas. Students listened with wide-eyed fascination as Assistant Principal MaryEllen Kakalos read the holiday story by Chris Van Allsburg and presented the prized Christmas bell, whose sound could only be heard by those who believe!

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
