The 62nd Annual Sammis Family House Tour, hosted by Family Service League (FSL), will be held on Wednesday, May 22nd, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This year’s Sammis Family House Tour features a wide array of well-appointed homes showcasing some of the North Shore’s finest architecture. The five tour homes are in the Huntington Bay, Lloyd Harbor, and Huntington vicinity. In its 62nd year, the Sammis Family House Tour has become a Long Island tradition. Nassau BOCES has been awarded a $50,350 grant as a part of $3.4 million in statewide grants New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently pledged to support early childhood to youth-aged programs in communities in need. The Parent-Child Home Program falls under grant guidelines which are intended to provide funding for children and youth in targeted high-risk neighborhoods. “The grant will fund an expansion of the nationally replicated and evidence-based, ParentChild Home Program, which Nassau BOCES has successfully administered in various districts since the 1970’s. It will afford the organization the ability to expand to include up to 50 more families, including five displaced by Superstorm Sandy. The
program gives low-income and low-literacy families the resources and skills they need to support their young children’s learning and prepare them for successful school entry. “We are thrilled and honored to be chosen as a part of this grant,” said Dr. Thomas Rogers, District Superintendent of Nassau BOCES.” The Parent-Child Home Program stresses the importance of parentchild interaction and aims to bridge the preparation gap for young children approaching school age. The program encourages parents and gives them the skills to interact with their children through verbal interaction, play and interactive experiences which nurture critical early emotional development and problem solving skills.

Servant activities and giving back to others are a big part of the curriculum at Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School; and from April 11th through April 13th, LuHi hosted its third Meal Packing Event. LuHi students, faculty and staff helped to package soy, rice, dried vegetables and seasoning mix to prepare nutritionally balanced meals. These meal packets were then distributed to Island Harvest, The Inn (Hempstead,) St. Hugh’s (Huntington Station,) St. Patrick’s (Huntington,) Our Lady of Grace Howard Beach,) the Freeport Emergency Food Pantry and other local food pantries in need. Additional meal packets are being shipped to the Andrew Grene School outside of Port au Prince, Haiti, an official feeding

Interact Club, HempsteadUniondale Rotary Club, Hempstead HS HaitianAmerican Group, Elwood Elementary School and various Lutheran and other church and community organizations helped us pack the meals to feed hungry individuals on Long Island and abroad. Members of the Jones Beach Coast Guard Station lent their muscle power and helped with the set-up of this event.

Meal Packing Event
I recently attended a Journalism event last week which reminded me what, in fact, it means to be a “Journalist” – and why it was I pursued a career in this field in the first place. It’s funny how easily it is to lose sight of the basics like that. Go to college, get a degree, find a job… then realize, just like that, eight years have passed by and you haven’t even paused long enough to evaluate the path you’ve taken, where it’s leading – you know, minor life-altering concepts like that. Ironic, isn’t it? But I digress. Back to the event. It is these types of panels and discussions
among Journalism’s elite which reignites that fire – that passion to make a difference with the written word, the spoken word, photography… whatever the specific medium might be. During the course of the evening, the question arose as to what, specifically, qualified someone to be a Journalist. After all, anyone can blog, anyone can utilize social media to share their thoughts and opinions on all things important (or trivial, as the case may be). So where lies the distinction? The joke was made that, “Journalists have the ability to be fired.” This is actually true, to a degree. Those whose opinions are not solicited have no real accountability to the
public. Of course, they should regardless. But in reality, it is the almighty dollar which dictates our purpose in life more than any sense of real responsibility. It’s a shame, as many of my fellow college classmates have long since abandoned the Journalism field for so-called loftier, more lucrative pursuits. But what of the fire? The motivation to make a difference? Not to mention, the four years of schooling at a rather expensive private university…But to each his/her own. For me, all it takes is one evening of stimulating conversation to quell any doubts that this is the field for me. Proud to be a Journalist, always.

The American Heart Association’s 4th Annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, May 19th, on the property of the beautiful Martha Clara Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Riverhead. More than 800 runners are expected. Day of event registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at 10:15 a.m. Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. A health expo will also be available during the event open to all participants. The Healing Heart 5K hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. The event creates a culture of health and physical activity, giving families the opportunity to participate in heart healthy activities together. Huntington Learning Center will join communities, educators, families and many others on May 7th, to celebrate National Teacher Day, which honors teachers and the critical role they play to ensure students receive a quality education. “Here at Huntington, we honor not only our own teachers, who make a difference in the lives of our students and their families, but all teachers in our city, community, state and country,” says Eileen Huntington, co-founder of Huntington Learning Center. “Educators stand out as some of the most influential people in children’s lives, and on National Teacher Day and always, we celebrate the work that they do to help our children reach their
potential and achieve their dreams.” How can community members, parents, students and others show their appreciation for the teachers in their lives? The 12-day power wheelchair trek by ALS patients across Long Island begins May 6 and ends May 18. A cornerstone of the Ride is the Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony at Stony Brook. The Ride also helps support Stony Brook Medicine’s Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Association certified center on Long Island. Area students, members of the community, and others interested in supporting the Ride for Life are welcome to help install the pinwheels. The idea of the pinwheels, conceived by Christopher Pendergast, is to remind everyone of the importance of research to seek better treatments for ALS and that a cure is “blowin’ in the wind.” For students seeking community service recognition that may be required from organizations or schools, a form is available to recognize their efforts. All volunteers are requested to bring a screwdriver if they have one. Refreshments are available to volunteers, including bagels during the morning hours and pizza and beverages for lunch. medical van that has made regularly scheduled visits to areas affected by the super storm, including Broad Channel in Queens, Staten Island and the Long Island communities of Long Beach and Lindenhurst. The van began treating people in Babylon this month. The North Shore-LIJ Health System received a $350,000 grant from the Robin Hood Relief Fund in February which will enable the van’s medical team to continue treating people through August. The mobile van is staffed with medical professionals, administrative support personnel and a driver. Patients have been treated for a range of illnesses and injuries, including upper respiratory infections, minor lacerations and maintenance of chronic and acute illnesses. In addition, the van’s medical staff provides flu and tetanus vaccinations. All of the care has been delivered free of charge, regardless of whether patients are insured. “We’re providing a valuable service to people during a difficult time in their lives and what has proven to be a continued and extended challenging period,” said Maria Torroella Carney, MD, North Shore-LIJ’s director of community-
based geriatrics in the department of medicine, who leads the mobile van project. “It’s very rewarding to assist these residents as they put their lives back together. We’re bringing quality healthcare resources from the health system directly to their communities.” Lisa Burch, North Shore-LIJ’s director of sustainability and social responsibility, said the award recognizes North Shore-LIJ’s commitment to the community. “We’re not just about providing care to the patients who walk through our doors but also helping those who cannot get to the care they require,” she said. This is the third year that Sustainable Long Island is bestowing the “Getting It Done” awards to local organizations. This year, groups are being honored for their work helping people impacted by Hurricane Sandy. North Shore-LIJ received its award last week during Sustainable Long Island’s seventh annual sustainability conference held at Carlyle on the Green in Bethpage State Park. Five hundred supporters gathered together to celebrate the Long Island Housing Partnership’s (LIHP) 25th Anniversary. The event – held on April 11 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury – celebrated LIHP’s 25 years of helping Long Islanders achieve the American Dream of home ownership. Shaun Donovan, United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, delivered the Keynote Address. Donovan’s tenure as HUD Secretary has reflected his commitment to making quality housing possible for every American. In December 2012, President Obama created the Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force and appointed Secretary Donovan as Chair. In his remarks Secretary Donovan spoke about LIHP’s achievements over the years and also described Hurricane Sandy relief and recovery efforts on Long Island as well as the importance of preparing for similar
storms in the future. LIHP President Peter Elkowitz and Chairman of the Board Kevin S. Law described the numerous successes LIHP has achieved and expressed their sincere gratitude to the many individuals and companies who have been partners to that success. In the past 25 years, “LIHP has transitioned from constructing 11 homes over two years to assisting more than 25,000 individuals achieve their American Dream of home ownership,” stated Law. LIHP’s programs have expanded significantly through the years and now include construction; providing
technical assistance to municipalities, developers and not-forprofit organizations in the construction of affordable workforce housing; education and counseling (from prepurchase to default/ foreclosure counseling); down payment assistance programs; neighborhood stabilization; residential rehabilitation; and one of the largest Employer Assisted Housing Programs in the nation. “There is no finer reward than to see someone – who believed they never could own a house – take the keys to their front door and walk into their first home!” stated Elkowitz.
