Town of Babylon Councilman Anthony Manetta announced that the 2026 Long Island Columbus Day Parade, presented by the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America, will take place in the Town of Babylon on Saturday, October 10. The celebration begins with a ceremony at noon at the Deer Park Lake Avenue Firehouse, followed by the

parade at 1 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The parade will step off along Deer Park Avenue and Lake Avenue and continue to the Constantino Brumidi Lodge #2211, 2075 Deer Park Avenue. It will bring together Sons and Daughters of Italy lodges from across Long Island, along with Italian-American and local

community organizations, to celebrate the cultural contributions and heritage of Italian-Americans. “We are proud to once again host the Long Island Columbus Day Parade,” said Councilman Manetta, an honorary chairman of the parade. “The Town of Babylon is home to one of the largest ItalianAmerican communities on Long Island. This

is a special day for our community to come together and celebrate our shared heritage, history, and traditions.” Arthur Spera, State President of the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America, added, “We are honored to bring our annual parade back to the Town of Babylon and thank

the Town for its continued hospitality and support. This event celebrates Italian-American culture and brings together families, businesses, and organizations from across Long Island.” After the parade, festivities continue at the Constantino Brumidi Lodge with food trucks,

AFA Receives National Grid Grant For New Sensory Garden The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) has been awarded a $10,000 grant from National Grid to create a new sensory garden for Long Islanders living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementiarelated illnesses. The sensory garden will be located at the AFA Barbara Rabinowitz Education & Center (149 Schleigel Boulebard, Amityville). The sensory garden will be a place where Long Islanders living with dementia can stimulate all five senses, sight, sound, smell, taste and touch, in a peaceful, relaxing outdoor setting. Plants and materials in the garden are specifically chosen for their scent, texture, and color. Horticultural therapy can promote positive mood, provide cognitive and sensory stimulation, and strengthen motor skills. “AFA is very grateful to National Grid for its generous support of this new program to help Long Islanders living

with dementia,” said AFA President & CEO Charles J. Photo courtesy of the Amityville Union Free School District Two Amityville Memorial High School students have earned one of New York State’s highest honors in school music. The pair was selected to perform at the 2026 New York State School Music Association AllState Conference in Rochester this December. Sameer Shah, a cellist, was selected to perform with the All-State Symphony Orchestra, while Susan Leach, an Alto 2 vocalist, was selected to perform with the All-State Treble Chorus. They will represent Amityville during the conference, which will be held Dec. 3-6 in Rochester. Selection for a NYSSMA All-State ensemble is a highly competitive process. More than 6,500 sophomores and juniors across New York typically prepare Level VI solos for All-State evaluations, with approximately 825 students ultimately selected to participate in the Conference All-State ensembles. Students are evaluated by NYSSMAcertified adjudicators, and statewide selection committees consider audition scores and rankings along with several additional factors when determining placement. “Sameer and Susan have

achieved something truly special, and we could not be prouder to have them represent Amityville on the statewide stage,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gina Talbert. Their selection reflects their talent, but it also represents countless hours of preparation, perseverance, and dedication to their craft. Opportunities like this demonstrate the importance of the arts in helping our student scholars discover their talents, develop confidence, and pursue excellence. Congratulations to Sameer, Susan, and the educators who have supported and encouraged them along the way.” The Conference All-State ensembles bring together many of New York’s top student musicians for several days of intensive rehearsals under the direction of renowned guest conductors. The experience culminates with performances during the annual NYSSMA Winter Conference. The district also recognizes Amityville music educators Ms. Bianca Ferrante and Mr. Joe De Mato-Garcia for their dedication to supporting the students throughout their

musical development and helping prepare them for this achievement. “Sameer and Susan’s selection for the NYSSMA All-State Conference is an extraordinary accomplishment and a reflection of the dedication they have shown to their musical growth,” said Director of Fine and Performing Arts Kimberly Musial. “To be selected among thousands of talented student musicians from across New York State is a tremendous honor. We are incredibly proud of them for reaching this level of achievement and grateful to Ms. Ferrante and Mr. De Mato-Garcia for the instruction, mentorship and encouragement they provide to our students. I look forward to seeing Sameer and Susan represent Amityville and our outstanding music program in Rochester this December.” Sameer and Susan will now prepare their All-State repertoire ahead of the December conference, where they will have the opportunity to rehearse and perform alongside accomplished student musicians from across New York State.
