How To Participate In Giving Tuesday

The excitement of the holiday season is palpable. Many people look forward to this time of year so they can deck their homes in lights and find gifts that will delight friends and family.

The spirit of giving that pervades the holiday season extends to Giving

Tuesday, which comes on the heels of the busiest shopping days of the year. According to the Giving Tuesday website, Giving Tuesday is a movement

that “reimagines a world built upon shared humanity and generosity.” Organizers feel that generosity is the avenue through which humanity can collectively strengthen its social fabric. Those who would like to harness the spirit of charitable giving can explore these ways to give back.

The tenth annual Giving Tuesday is on Tuesday December 2, 2025.

Get involved where it started

Giving Tuesday started with a team from the Belfer Center for Innovative & Social Impact in New York City. In November 2012, these individuals implored nonprofits, influencers, and businesses to inspire others to get involved with acts of giving. The organization has many initiatives that people can support in addition to the original Giving Tuesday.

Plant a community garden

Food insecurity is a problem in many neighborhoods across the country. Petition local city councils for a portion of green spaces to devote to a community garden to grow produce for those who may need it. Doing so can foster a sense of camaraderie in communities.

Start a caremongering movement

Caremongering began as a community-led social movement to address health and social needs during the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada. Caremongering is designed to help vulnerable people and can include anything from grocery shopping for those with mobility issues to virtually or physically socializing with others to combat social

isolation. Those who want to caremonger can do many other things, like run emergency errands or help with childcare.

Donate goods and supplies

Areas of the southern United States experienced extreme devastation with the one-two punch of hurricanes Helene and Milton in early October. Natural disasters can displace families and push individuals to the brink as supplies become scarce. It is likely recovery efforts in areas wiped out by these storms will take months, underscoring the importance of continued support via donations and volunteer efforts.

Getting involved in Giving Tuesday is easier than one may imagine. Let this day sow the seeds of generosity for the entire year.

Small businesses are the backbone of our communities. That’s why we’re proud to give back to those establishments across Long Island and in The Rockaways through our energy efficiency and economic development programs. You too can help support them by shopping for gifts in your community. It’s how we keep our local economy strong and how we stick together on our island.

Gratitude Changes Everything

At the end of this month, many of us will gather with family and friends to give thanks for the blessings in our lives. We will also remember those who have gone before us, and those who are sick and less fortunate. It feels especially important this year to take time to reflect on what truly matters. The world seems loud, uncertain, and divided. Turn on the news or scroll through your phone, and you’ll find more than enough headlines to stir up anxiety or frustration. But if you look closer, past the noise, you will find countless acts of kindness, compassion, and community that remind us how much good still exists in the world. Right here in Lindenhurst, we see it every day: neighbors helping neighbors, local businesses supporting

one another, and families showing up for their children, their schools, and their town.

Gratitude has a quiet power. It doesn’t erase the challenges we face, but it changes how we experience them. When we focus on what we have, rather than what we’ve lost, we begin to notice the small, beautiful moments that might otherwise pass us by. A friendly wave from a neighbor, a teacher who

goes the extra mile, or a sunset at Venetian Shores that turns the water gold. This month, I’m thankful for the same things I’ve always been thankful for…my family, good friends, and this wonderful community that continues to make Lindenhurst such a special place to live. It’s the people who make a town feel like home, and I see it every day in the faces of those who live and work here.

As Thanksgiving approaches, join me in taking a moment to breathe, to look around, and to appreciate what’s right in front of us.

Gratitude may not change the world overnight, but it can absolutely change our world…how we see it, how we live in it, and how we treat one another. In uncertain times, that’s something worth holding on to. Happy Thanksgiving!

Town Of Babylon Honors EMS Responders For Life-Saving Actions

The Town of Babylon extends its heartfelt gratitude to all EMS responders — the men and women who answer the call when seconds matter most.

A special recognition is extended to the West Babylon Fire Department and the WyandanchWheatley Heights Ambulance Corp for their recent life-saving actions, which were honored by the Suffolk Regional Emergency Medical Services Council (REMSCO). Their professionalism, teamwork, and compassion truly make the difference between

tragedy and survival.

This recognition serves as a powerful reminder of how vital early and effective CPR can be—and how every trained responder, bystander, and dispatcher plays a crucial role in saving lives.

“Imagine what a different world we’d live in without these dedicated EMS professionals—the ones who show up day or night, in every kind of weather, ready to bring help, hope, and healing to those in need,” said Councilman Terence McSweeney.

“Our EMS providers

represent the very best of who we are as a community. Their skill, courage, and commitment to others are the reasons families are whole again after tragedy. We can never thank them enough for what they do.”

— Town of Babylon Councilman & Public Safety Chairman Terence McSweeney

The Town of Babylon thanks all EMS heroes for their continued service and dedication to protecting the health and safety of residents across our community—every single day.

Legislator McCaffrey Recognizes

Recently, Legislator Kevin McCaffrey and other members of the Suffolk County Legislature said farewell to the participants of the 2025 Legislative Page Program in a special graduation ceremony at the Maxine Y. Postal Auditorium at the Riverhead County Center.

Legislator McCaffrey had the opportunity to recognize Daniel Spiezio, who spent the summer assigned to his District Office in Lindenhurst. Daniel, a student at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, is proudly pursuing a Master of Arts

in History and maintains a devout dedication to serving others – largely through his desire to connect our history to the world we live in today. He boasts an exceptional résumé, having served as an Assistant Teacher, Marketing Intern, and most notably as the Founder and Social Media Manager of Signpost Music Magazine.

Said Legislator McCaffrey: “Daniel put his talents on full display in my office, as he worked regularly with Legislative Staff on all matters relating to the

Legislature – including constituent services, researching pending legislation, and event planning and scheduling. He is disciplined and has a strong work ethic and notably completed all assigned tasks on time with a tremendous level of competency! I thank Daniel for his service and wish him luck as he continues his studies!”

The Suffolk County Legislature Page Program is a wonderfully rewarding experience for students interested in public policy, government and politics. It’s a unique opportunity

to see first-hand how local government works. Participants are assigned to a Legislative District Office where they will work directly with a Legislator and their staff. They may analyze legislation, read and summarize reports, work with constituents, write letters, or any other tasks as required by the day-to-day operations of a legislative office. Additionally, participants participate in a mock Legislature, attend Committee and General Meetings, and work on professional development.

Legislator McCaffrey Recognizes Distinguished Youth Award Participant

Recently, legislator Kevin McCaffrey hosted Distinguished Youth Award recipient Sarah Persaud and her family for a special award presentation and reception at his Lindenhurst Office!

The Suffolk County Legislature’s Distinguished Youth Award Program is open to all Suffolk County residents between the ages of 13-18. The Program is a competitive voluntary recognition program that challenges Suffolk County’s youth to become more civically involved in their communities and to focus on activities that they enjoy or have an interest in for which they would like to improve their aptitude. The Award focuses on four categories: Volunteer Service, Personal Development, Exploration and Physical Fitness. Hundreds of hours of participation and service in each category are required for successful completion.

Said Legislator McCaffrey: “It brings me

great joy to recognize Sarah Persaud of Lindenhurst, who over the last year accomplished her goal of earning the Gold Distinguished Youth Award! As an elected official, I find it not only refreshing, but motivating, when youth take an active interest in bettering themselves and

their community. In a time where we can feel surrounded by negativity – be it on the news, on social media, or elsewhere – it is such programs as the Suffolk County Legislature Distinguished Youth Award that should be newsworthy!”

The National Football League (NFL) was formed in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA). The firstever NFL game was played at Triangle Park in Dayton, Ohio, on October 3, 1920. In that contest, the hometown Dayton Triangles defeated the Columbus Panhandles 14-0. Though the Dayton Triangles were eventually purchased by a Brooklynbased syndicate and relocated to New York as a result of that transaction, the team’s status as the host of the first NFL game continues to pay dividends for residents of the southwestern Ohio city where the franchise ushered in the now wildly popular league. In recognition of the place the city of Dayton holds in NFL history, the NFL Foundation, in partnership with FieldTurf & Vasco, pledged to fund the installment of a new artificial turf at the city’s Kettering Park.

Girl Scouts Of Suffolk County Host 2025 Holiday Lights Show

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County (GSSC) will host its annual Holiday Light Show, which returns to Camp Edey in Bayport for an expanded, magical walk-through experience, Thursdays through Sundays from November 28 to December 21, 2025. The winter wonderland will open with a celebratory countdown before the first night of the show on November 28 @ 5 pm. Camp Edey is located at 1500 Lakeview Ave., Bayport, NY 11705.

Launched more than 20 years ago, the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Holiday Light Show has grown into a Long Island tradition — transforming the scenic grounds of Camp Edey into an “Enchanted Forest” of lights.

The highlight of the show will be “Girl Scout Way,” an area where the five winning creations from the 2025 Girl Scouts Holiday Light Design Contest will be on display. Each design was drawn by a

Girl Scout and then custombuilt by the groundkeepers at Camp Edey in creations spanning six to twelve feet tall.

The 2025 Girl Scouts Holiday Light Design Contest winners are:

• Penelope Alambra, Smithtown, Troop 358, Brownie

• Amani Bradley-Coleman, Sienna Lebron, Teresa Cortez, Natalia Ciborowski, Kaylee Jimenez, Kiera GreenWilson, Maggie Ericson, Bomi Oyewo, Hanmi Oyewo, Lindenhurst, Troop 506, Multi-Level

• Ciara Weisbecker, Babylon, SU 14 (Juliette), Senior

• Olivia Castelli, Patchogue, Troop 1400, Cadette

• Sadie Ciesinski, Melville, Troop 103, Junior

“This event is a beautiful example of how Girl Scouts combine imagination, leadership, and community

spirit to shine light— literally and figuratively— on the holiday season,” said Tammy Severino, President & CEO of Girl Scouts of Suffolk County. “We are proud to showcase these designs and give visitors a chance to see the girls’ ideas brought to life in lights.”

Among the special features at this year’s Holiday Lights Show:

• A new “Cozy Bungalow Package” with admission for up to five guests in a private winter-themed bungalow plus food vouchers, offered at a special rate. Themes include Nordic Nest (Scandinavian, rustic, snowy lodge), Holly Jolly Hut (traditional red and green Christmas décor), Gumdrop Cottage (candycolored fun straight from a storybook and gingerbread-inspired décor), and Starlight Shack (twinkle lights and a starry winter’s

night with touches of snowflakes).

• The “Chill Zone” returns, with lawn games, fire-pit warmth, and hot-cocoa treats courtesy of First-Class Food Trucks.

• Visits with Santa Claus! The event is open to the public, and ticket prices start at $12.50. Tickets and Cozy Bungalow reservations must be purchased in advance on the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County website:

http://www.gssclightshow. org.

Every ticket purchased supports leadership programs, summer camp experiences, and financial assistance for girls throughout Suffolk County.
