The Massapequa High School varsity cheerleading squad finished second at the Universal Cheerleaders Association Empire Regional competition on December 10th. The team now advances to the national championship. This was a historic moment for the team as it was the first time it has placed in the top three at any UCA regional competition. “The Empire Regional is considered the most prestigious regional competition, from a talent perspective, in the nation,” said coach Erica Jordan. “Second place is an unbelievable victory for our school. Penguins, horses, porcupines and other animals typically not found as household pets were the subject of a science lesson in Dorothea Carney’s second-grade class at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students studied animal habitats, learning about different land and water environments. Each student picked a different animal, and had to research facts such as what type of

animal it is, where it lives, what it eats and whether or not it hibernates. They used websites including Pebble Go and Enchanted Learning to gather their information. The children then created their own dioramas at home to resemble their animal’s habitat, and then brought them into school. The students also created fact sheets and shared what they learned with their classmates.

When you look back over the course of your life, there are often certain places that seem to stand out as the setting for your most treasured memories. For me, that place was always my grandparents’ house. From holiday gatherings to backyard barbecues, childhood sleepovers to Yankee baseball game viewing; countless events were centered on that old beloved split level. My grandparents had moved there in 1960, one of the first of their family to have had the opportunity to “move eastward” to the country-like expanses of Long Island from the cozy

confines of Long Island City. With them came my then eight year-old mother and my four year-old uncle, followed a number of years later by my aunt; and thus the perfect “starter” home became the setting for the decades of memories which followed, not only for them but for the next generation as well – myself included. Little did they know that the nearly vacant block they moved onto would grow into the close-nit community it is today, filled with neighbors and friends, and even a few family members, on the surrounding streets. Fifty-six years later, the house that became a home

to us all is no longer “in the family,” passed on to another young couple, moving from the city, looking to begin their lives in the suburbs in much the same way that my grandparents had all those years ago. Sure, it was only a house; but it served as so much more to all those who had the pleasure of stepping foot across its threshold. And so, with the end of 2016 comes the closing of yet another chapter for my family. Life goes on, to be sure; but some things leave a sizable imprint so that life – as it was known, and lived – is never quite the same. Farewell to #580… Thanks for the memories.

director, said what has always shaped the music department in Massapequa is that administrators, teachers and students pursue excellence over accomplishments. He added that without the support of the board of education, Ms. Iconis and the rest of the Central Office staff, along with the building leadership in all nine schools, this high standard would not be possible. The recognition took place at the 2016 NYSSMA winter conference in Rochester. This honor is the most prestigious music award given by the organization and it recognizes only the most exemplary programs in New York State. The spring harvest was in March, and a festival called Akitu, which lasted 12 days, was celebrated. An important part of the festival was the crowning of a new king. Special rituals also affirmed a connection to the gods. The Babylonians made promises to the gods, which included vows to return borrowed objects and pay outstanding debts.

Resolutions can also be traced to ancient Rome. The Romans were instrumental in creating a more formal calendar, and the start of the new year was moved from March to January (January and February were added to the Roman calendar under the rule of Numa Pompilius). Julius Caesar wanted to honor January’s namesake, Janus, the Roman god of beginnings. Janus’ two faces enabled him to look back into the past and forward into the future. Sacrifices to Janus were made, and worshipers exchanged gifts

with one another. A custom of setting resolutions began during this period as well, with Romans promising to be good to one another. Eventually, these resolutions were funneled into prayers and fasting when Christianity was adopted by the Roman Empire. Other religious parallels include the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which is a day of atonement and reflection as celebrants examine their wrongdoings and seek forgiveness and to behave better moving forward. Yom

Kippur follows Rosh Hashanah, Judaism’s own new year. Resolutions also may be loosely tied to Medieval times. During this time, knights took a “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season. Each year, these knights would reaffirm their commitment to chivalry. Today New Year’s resolutions are largely a secular tradition, but they’re still connected to a desire to be a good person and put one’s best self forward.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an average of 304 people die in drunk-driving crashes in the days surrounding Christmas and New Year’s Eve each year. Before heading out on New Year’s Eve, celebrants should ensure their safety by arranging for transportation to and from the festivities. Choose a designated driver to drive throughout the night, or agree to utilize a taxi or shuttle service if everyone plans to consume alcohol. Men and women who volunteer to be designated drivers should be especially alert on the roadways, preparing to drive in potentially inclement weather and

throughout the festivities so the party is memorable for all the right reasons.
