Ghosts Of Christmas Past By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering – well, any gathering really – in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. With the passing of my grandmother earlier this year, there was an immediate sense that this holiday season would be a bit different. So many years – decades, really – spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the

oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details

and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al, also since passed, mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend! Either way, I know I will have at least two angels watching over things to make sure all goes smoothly.

Silence was golden at Fairfield Elementary School when Massapequa High School’s American Sign Language (ASL) students taught fifth-graders how to communicate without uttering a word. The program, now in its 18th year, is hallmarked as a “wonderful learning experience for both the fifth-graders and the ASL students,” said ASL teacher Melanie Smith. More than 40 ASL students prepared a series

of 20 minute lessons on a range of topics such as sports, occupations, rooms in a house, feelings and weather. Before beginning the lessons, the fifth graders are divided into small groups so they have the opportunity to learn four different topics. The ASL students taught the lessons with the aid of props, SMARTBoards, roleplaying and a multitude of games that effectively kept students engaged. The lessons culminated

with a question-andanswer session about deaf culture and technological devices used by the hearing impaired today. “The beauty of this program is that it inspires our students to take American Sign Language when they reach high school, “said Fairfield Principal Lori Dano. “Our teachers were proud to see so many former Fairfield students return today as presenters.”

Lake Elementary School worked so hard once again to collect toys for other children who are in need of some extra cheer. They are going to make lots of other boys and girls very, very happy, and they should be very proud of their efforts,” said Senator Fuschillo. “Extend the Holidays” is an annual toy drive that Senator Fuschillo

organizes for the benefit of children in Winthrop Hospital’s Pediatric Center. East Lake students collected new, unwrapped toys for children of all ages. These toys will be delivered to the hospital after the holidays so that children can experience the joys of receiving a new toy after the holiday season and throughout the year.

Ten Massapequa High School freshmen lent a helping hand at Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park by baking cupcakes and brownies for families residing there as their ill children receive treatment at the nearby Steven & Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Students first toured the facility, which for nearly 30 years has been providing a comfortable,

supportive “home away from home” for families in need while their loved ones receive medical treatment. Students received important information about the founder of the charity, the successes of the organization, and the impact of charitable donations on Ronald McDonald House families. The visit was part of an annual Day of Volunteering at Massapequa High

School-Ames Campus, which is organized by the Helping Hands Club and advised by teachers Karen Matros and Alyssa Levine. “The initiative teaches students at Ames the importance of giving back to the community by empowering them to help others,” Matros said. “Serving others will also help them become capable and caring leaders of the future,” Levine added.

Concert Spreads Joy

Massapequa High School’s music ensembles brought the spirit of the holidays to the community during its annual holiday concert, December 16th. Performances by the Women’s Chorus, Symphony Orchestra, and A Capella Choir directed by Ilena Dempsey, Marjorie Spagnuolo and Nichole Greene, respectively, had audience members smiling as they delivered a festive variety of traditional songs

and those enjoyed around the world. Highlights included the beautiful Hashivenu, as well as A Christmas Festival, I Saw Three Ships, Sleigh Ride, and Chanukah Festival Overture. “This concert is a culmination of the hard work of our students and staff over the last few months,” said Dr. David Gaines, the district’s curriculum associate for music. “We are proud

to showcase what they have accomplished while spreading some holiday cheer to our residents through music.” In addition to the community concert, the high school held its evening holiday concert for parents and family members and its holiday alumni concert where Massapequa High School graduates were called to the stage to perform.

Jenny Avgeris, a fifthgrade teacher at John H. West Elementary School in the Plainedge School District, was recently honored by KJOY radio station with the distinction of being named Teacher of

the Month. Nominated by her student Jaclyn Carano, Ms. Avgeris is receiving one free meal each month from Noodles & Company in Garden City for the honor. Her class also received

a special “Noodle party” from the company. Ms. Avgeris was selected through an intense online voting process and was ultimately chosen as Teacher of the Month for August.

On December 7th, dancers from A Step Above Performing Arts in Massapequa helped the Massapequa Chamber of Commerce ignite the Tree and Menorah in the lighting ceremony at Broadway in Massapequa. Over two hundred spectators endured the cold temperatures listening to our local politicians give

warm holiday wishes and watched the fun, high energy, dance routines by the 60 students from A Step Above Performing Arts. The students were all in character as they wore their holiday sweatshirts donning seasonal ear muffs. The event was hosted by Lauren Pulvidente, of the Massapequa Chamber of Commerce in partnership

with John Venditto, the town of Oyster Bay supervisor. In keeping the holiday tradition alive, Santa rode-in on his fire truck escorted by the Massapequa Fire Department. The group was warmed with complementary hot chocolate, cookies, and gifts for all the children. A great time was had by all.

WORLD AIDS DAY PROGRAM - This year at the 3rd Annual World AIDS Day Program at NUMC, the theme was “Celebration and Commemoration.” Due to current and impending AIDS research and on currently available medications, there is hope for the future. The global goal of “Getting to Zero” is hopeful. A moving ceremony commemorating HIV+ patients who passed away from HIV in 2013 was followed by an educational mini-conference.

PARADE OF BASKETS - Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center’s annual tradition of raffling themed baskets to help employees facing challenges during the holidays raised nearly $3,000. All items collected by the hospital’s Mission and Ministry and Visions Committees were donated by staff. Funds went toward the purchase of more than 100 gift cards given to staff members and their families.

HOLIDAY OF GIVING - NuHealth/NUMC participates in “Holiday of Giving” event in Hempstead. NuHealth staff was invited to present information about health services to the community, such as bariatric surgery, diabetes, dental, ophthalmology, psychiatry, maternal-fetal health, and our Family Health Centers. They also conducted blood pressure screenings, and promoted their injury prevention program.

GIFT COLLECTION - Good Samaritan Hospital’s Mission and Ministry Committee held its second annual “Adopt a Family” Christmas gift drive benefitting patients and families of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Health Center (MLK) in Wyandanch. The MLK social work department identified 19 families which were adopted by 15 Good Samaritan Hospital departments.
