My Night Before Christmas It’s been over ten years since we last celebrated Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house. Over 20 years of my life, from childhood onward, were spent around that grand dining room table, enjoying our traditional fare of spaghetti with garlic and oil, complemented by anchovies and walnuts for the adults, just plain tomato sauce for me. This was followed by massive piles of fried shrimp, filet of sole, fried mushrooms, all prefaced by a giant platter of antipasto of course. And then, there was dessert, that array of homemade cookies – baked lovingly by my grandma and grandpa. I’m not sure where the recipes originated from, or if they were my grandmother’s own personal spin on some old favorites, but they were delicious. I recall, somewhere during my college years,

becoming interested in the actual process that went into creating these tasty treats. I set up camp at my grandparents’ kitchen table, rolling dough, cutting it into tiny strips, twirling it into a cookie shape and – best of all – drizzling the icing on top. Yum. How I miss those traditions. Looking through some old photo albums recently, I came upon dozens of snapshots of these Christmas Eve gatherings, pre-dating even little old me in some cases. The decorations may have changed through the years, and even the cast of characters to some degree… but certain things remained a constant. The tree for instance. That big, beautiful Christmas tree which stretched to the cathedral ceiling, adorned by what seemed like hundreds of sparkly ornaments… surrounded by dozens of shiny presents, wrapped with

perfection by my grandfather. And always, at the end of the night, there would be that “one more” gift that would be brought up from the basement, usually the best of all. But above all that – the presents, the food, the frenzy to have everything run perfectly from beginning to end within a reasonable interval of time (seven hours or so, give or take) – were the memories made with those people, in that house. Priceless memories. When I grow up, I had always thought, I want every Christmas Eve to be exactly like this. Of course, when you’re a child, they don’t have the heart to tell you that things will never be quite the same, or that perfect, ever again. How grateful I am that it was though, even for a brief moment in time. Merry Christmas to all. May your Eve bring even a hint of that same magic.

West Elementary School in the Plainedge School District hosted a human rights gallery for peers and special guests to visit. After an extensive unit on human rights, each student put together an essay, interactive presentation and speech to share, which was displayed in a museum-style format throughout the fifth-grade hallway and classrooms. Projects covered topics such as defining human rights and important people who impacted the movement. Fifth-graders were labeled as “youth delegates” for the day and shared video presentations and artistic presentations of their work with guests.

Massapequa students joined millions of youngsters around the world by taking part in the Hour of Code campaign from December 5th through 9th. The international movement sponsored by Code.org aimed to take the mystery out of coding by showing how anyone can learn the basics of computer programming. Throughout the week, elementary students did coding during their library periods, while Berner Middle School hosted a schoolwide coding session the morning of December 9th. There were also Hour of Code activities during lunch periods and in technology classes at Massapequa High School’s main and Ames campuses. “Learning computer science is so important,”

said Ed Kemnitzer, the executive assistant for technology integration of curriculum support and development. “Coding is a skill that is definitely on the rise. The students love it and they want to do it all day.” Code.org activities allowed students to create basic video games based on various themes, including “Moana: Wayfinding with Code,” “Star Wars: Building a Galaxy with Code” and “Code with Anna and Elsa.” They were able to work at their own level and pace, based on their interest and ability. All librarians, magnet teachers and computer teaching assistants are trained Code.org instructors. One of the first buildings in the district to introduce the Hour of Code was Lockhart

Elementary School. There, library media specialist Tara Gonzalez and computer teacher assistant Donna Meyer worked with students to help them write lines of code using their Chromebooks. The children learned coding languages from simple to complex, and allowed them to experience the process that computer programmers follow. Students interested in coding are able to continue these activities at home. The Hour of Code campaign is an extension of coding activities that are already taking place in the district. Elementary students in fourth through sixth grades have been coding in their Student Council school’s Makerspace using members at Eastplain programs such as Dot and Elementary School in the Dash and Ozobots. Plainedge School District hosted a pet donation drive to benefit the Toys of Hope Poor Paws Program. In honor of the holiday season, students and staff at the school were asked to bring in any donations

Tiny Toys Delivery The holiday spirit is alive with students at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, who have found numerous ways to spread cheer and good will. Students have been donating small items for the Tiny Toys Giving Tree, created in honor of a former sixth-grade teacher. The children bring in small toys such as cars, stuffed animals and travel size games, which get delivered to St. Charles Hospice Center for children who are visiting family members there. the collection drive and said children donate several hundred toys each year. The Student Council organized a toy drive to benefit the John Theissen Children’s Foundation, which supports sick and underprivileged children. Students were asked to donate new, unwrapped toys. This year’s motto was “Give a Toy and Spread Joy.” Students Against Destructive Decisions took part in Postcards for Patients through the Postcard Pick-MeUp Program. Members of the SADD club wrote more than 400 letters to children and adults who are in the hospital during the holiday season. The postcards included pictures, poems and well wishes. “I am so proud of our teachers and

students for their generosity, kindness, and compassion,” said Assistant Principal Bryan Piotrowski. “These programs not only make a difference in the community, but also build important values in our students.”
