Turkey Trot Tradition

he 4th Annual Massapequa Park Turkey Trot was recently held, taking runners north of Lake Shore Drive to Walker Street, where they entered Mansfield Park and continued south on the bike path of the Peter J. Schmitt Memorial Preserve, before finishing the race at Brady Park. Prior to the run, a onemile Youth Fun Run around the lake in Brady Park was held. The event has become a popular autumn tradition.

SPELLING BEE GREATS - Charles E. Schwarting Elementary School in the Plainedge School District held its annual schoolwide Spelling Bee in November. Fourteen students from the fourth and fifth grade prepared and competed for the chance to advance to the regional spelling bee at Hofstra University in February. This year’s winner is fourth-grader Jack Flaherty; fifth-grader Thomas FitzSimons is the runner-up. The district wishes the best of luck to Jack on the next round of competition.

NEWLY INDUCTED - Town of Oyster Bay Town Clerk James Altadonna Jr. presented a citation to newly inducted Eagle Scout Anthony Guarascio at his Eagle Scout Court of Honor. For his Eagle project, Anthony impressively implemented the construction of an all-natural walk in the garden at the Town’s Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa. This project required the planting of 172 plants from 13 native species, and will serve as an outdoor, live classroom for the Town’s Preschool, which is also located in Marjorie R. Post Community Park. Anthony spent 191 hours completing it.

The Plainedge Board of Education unanimously adopted a resolution to provide assessment relief as set forth in Chapter 424 of the Laws of 2013, titled Sandy Assessment Relief Act, at its November 26th meeting. Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Chris J. Coschignano announced that the Town’s Holiday on Ice Show, which has become a holiday tradition for Town residents, will again be presented at the Town of Ice Bay Center in Bethpage. The popular show, now in its 4th year, will take place on Saturday, December 21st at 7 p.m. Admissions is free, but in keeping with this being “the season of

giving,” those attending the show are asked to bring two non-perishable food items to the show, which will be collected by Island Harvest, an organization committed to ending hunger on Long Island. “‘Holiday On Ice ‘ is an event that our residents eagerly look forward to each year, and I am delighted that our Town’s residents and their families will once again be able to enjoy this special presentation,” said

Due to the “Holiday on Ice” show, the public skating session at the Center, which is normally held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., will not be held that evening. However, the Town’s two outdoor rinks, located at Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa and at Syosset-Woodbury Park will be open. Councilman Coschignano. “Some of the finest skaters in the Nation will be performing and showcasing their talent.” The Supervisor added that students of the Town’s figure skating program will also be performing. In addition to the figure skating, there will be other holiday themed activities for guests to enjoy, including a friendly hockey game between the Elves and the Reindeer, two teams with players from the Town’s ‘Tot Hockey’ team. The Ice Skating Center will also feature a pro shop for shoppers seeking a gift for hockey fans on their lists. There is also a fireplace for visitors to spend a relaxing moment and perhaps enjoying refreshments from the snack bar. “Imagine the enjoyment a family will have watching a holiday show, and then enjoying hot chocolate while sitting by a fireplace,” said Councilman Coschignano. “This is a great family, holiday, event and admission is free.” Also returning for this year’s event is the biggest star of the holiday season – Santa. Children may visit with the jolly man in the red suit and even taken a picture with him following the show. The Town will also, once again, take part in the “Holiday Mail for Heroes” Program. The New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), is proud to announce that Three Hundred Forty-Seven (347) students from school music programs across Long Island have been selected to perform among the approximately 900 students in NYSSMA All State Ensembles. This constitutes more than one third of the total number of students selected for All State. Students will gather to rehearse and perform in Rochester as NYSSMA celebrates its 81st year of advocating for quality music education in schools throughout New York State. This Conference will mark the sixteenth (16th) in a row to be held at the Rochester Convention Center, and will feature Nancy Ditmer, president of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) as keynote speaker. ``We are very excited about returning to Rochester – it’s like a second home for NYSSMA,” said president Marc E. Greene. ``More than one thousand music educators from all over the State will attend for professional development opportunities, seminars, performances, and valuable lesson materials for use in their classes and rehearsals.

The Long Island Museum announces that it will close for the months of January and February, 2014. Next year, 2014 marks the 75th anniversary of the Long Island Museum’s founding and big changes are on the horizon. After a brief winter hiatus, the museum will reopen on March 1 with three new exhibitions: Colors of Long Island, the annual student art exhibition featuring original artwork by Long Island students in grades K through 12. The exhibit will be on display in the Visitors Center from March 1st through April 27th, 2014 Moving to the Art Museum, the main gallery will feature Brothers in Art: the Changing Face of American Painting, which includes more than 150 paintings, prints, drawings and letters by William

Sidney Mount and his brother Shepard Alonzo Mount. This show runs from March 1st through May 4th, 2014. Finally, the newly named Victoria Costigan gallery will feature Jackson Pollock’s Prints: Works from the Pollock-Krasner House. Although best known for his poured, abstract paintings, Pollock also created many works in print media that are not as widely known. This exhibition, curated by Director of the PollockKrasner House, Helen Harrison, contains 12 such prints and will be on display from March 1st through June 8th, 2014. Summer exhibitons will include Long Island at War and a special exhibition, in celebration of the 75th anniversary, LIM @ 75: Treasures from the Permanent Collection, highlighting 75 rarely

seen paintings, carriages and artifacts. In addition, visitors will delight at a new outdoor series featuring larger-than-life sculptures on museum grounds by two Long Island artists. Visitors are invited to look for new programs and more details on exhibitions throughout the coming year and to help us celebrate 75 years of Long Island history. Just last week, I purchased my very first Christmas tree, complete with twinkling white lights, red ornaments and glittery accents. It’s not Rockefeller Center spectacular, but it’s mine, in all its 6 ½ foot “slim” glory – because, let’s face it, once you actually furnish an apartment, you realize there’s not a whole lot of room leftover for anything else! And so it begins, the decorating, that tedious task we all dread yet somehow become fully engrossed in

the minute the plates are cleared from Thanksgiving dinner. It’s a slow process, but a fun one nonetheless. And for me, this will be my first holiday accumulating Christmas novelties to display in my own cozy living quarters. There’s something about holiday decorations that immediately brighten up any room, or street, or neighborhood… the magic of the season personified. EGYPTIAN EXHIBIT - Sixth graders at Grace Episcopal Day School culminated their study of ancient Egypt by setting a museum-type exhibit in the main hall of the school. The students worked at home and in school to research many different aspects of ancient Egyptian culture. They learned about hieroglyphics by creating personal cartouches with their own names, carved statues of the Sphinx out of soap or clay, constructed pyramids, sarcophaguses and pocket dolls. Each student wrote a short report on the aspect of Egyptian culture that interested them the most.
