Kindergarten, first, second and third grade students from Grace Day School in Massapequa, smile and take a break from the action as they learn the ABC’s of playing the violin. Fiddling Around is an
after school enrichment program presented by music teacher, Teresa Greenberg. Students learned fundamentals of the violin and musicianship through songs, rhymes and music games. Studies have
shown that children learn best through play and experimentation. When one third grade member of the class was asked if he liked playing the violin, he replied “It’s awesome!”

The Plainedge Red Devils will be the latest team to call the Town of Oyster Bay’s state of the art ice skating center in Bethpage home. After a long hiatus, organized hockey is returning to the Plainedge community with this year’s launch of a middle school and high school team. The Plainedge district takes in areas including Bethpage, Farmingdale, North Massapequa, Massapequa
and Seaford. New York Islander Hockey Legend Bobby Nystrom (left) was on hand for a special ceremony unveiling a Plainedge banner which will hang from the rafters of the rink signifying the community’s triumphant return to the sport of hockey. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, a resident of North Massapequa, said he was excited to see
Plainedge representing his hometown community. “The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center was designed to connect with the community and welcome new teams and participants,” Supervisor Venditto said. “The reemergence of Plainedge Hockey is a perfect example of an organization availing itself of a welcoming and supportive environment. I wish them all the best for years to come.”
Massapequa Students Learn From Legend Renowned actor, director, producer and filmmaker Ralph Macchio - best known for his roles in The Karate Kid movies, My Cousin Vinny and the Outsiders - visited Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) to teach a Master Class. Twelve Massapequa students Ryan were among more than 25 film and theatre students to participate in the master class, where Mr. Macchio gave them an insider’s perspective on the film industry. He also noted how lucky the students are to have a high school for performing and visual arts.
“Learn as much as you can,” Mr. Macchio advised his student audience. “You’re involved in the perfect scenario. You’re collaborating with your peers and creating art. I had a great experience here at the Long Island High School for the Arts,” he said of his visit. “I want to help this program flourish. When I was a kid, I didn’t have the opportunity to take my creative talent to to a place like this, where it could be nurtured and blossom. The students here are inspired to do great work and to learn their craft. That inspires me to continue to give back.”
On a grander scale, Mr. Macchio joined Principal Dr. AJ Hepworth in the LIHSA theatre for an Inside the Actors Studio style interview. Attending students engaged in an interactive question and answer session to learn the nuances of the film industry from this seasoned professional. They were also audience to an exclusive private screening of Mr. Macchio’s latest writing and directing endeavor, the awardwinning short, Across Grace Alley. Film students enjoyed a rare opportunity, as the film legend offered critiques of their work.
MASSAPEQUA STUDENTS LEARN FROM LEGEND - Renowned actor and legendary film and television icon Ralph Macchio joined Massapequa UFSD students during a recent visit to the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts: theater student Charles McGrath, dance students April Lorenzi, Katelyn Molloy and Nikki Skyler Moll, theater students Nicole Furka, Kaitlin Muir, theater technology TURKEY TROT - The Fifth Annual Massapequa Park Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk at student Jared James and theater student Anthony Morano; theater student Aggie Brady Park was recently held to benefit Yes Community Counseling Center, a not-for- Lesser, film student Casey Paust, theater student Taylor Hogan and art student Emily Muir. profit youth and family service agency.

Environmental Study Dr. Keith Jones, students further analyzed their findings with the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), an accelerator facility at Brookhaven Lab that produced beams of x-rays and other wavelengths of light used by researchers to study materials and biological structures. Getting access to a cutting-edge facility like NSLS, where scientists compete for experimental time, is a rare scientific opportunity for these high school scientists. The NSLS ceased operations in September 2014 in advance of the opening of the new NSLS-II at Brookhaven. Later this year, students will present the results of their research to an audience of parents, principals and district superintendents. Once the project is complete, the institute and its partners will look at the possibility of having the findings published. “This project gives our students a glimpse into real science,” said Nassau BOCES Doshi STEM Instructor Jennifer
Galasso. “The scientific community is large, and communication is essential. Our ultimate goal is to expose these students to STEM careers and give them a realistic experience in the research side of science.” “I enjoy working with these students,” said Dr. Jones, an environmental scientist who worked with the students at an x-ray beamline at NSLS. “We have a bunch of really smart kids and smart teachers on Long Island, and I’m really impressed by them all. I see this program as something cooperative, where I gain a lot of insight from the students and their teachers. It’s a real scientific collaboration.” “We’re actively involved in the scientific process,” said Baldwin High School ninth grader Lauryn Lee, who is in her first year at Doshi STEM. “We’re working with the NSLS, and you don’t usually get to do that below the college level. It’s exciting to compare our data with other schools,” she

Students from the Nassau BOCES Doshi STEM Institute are collaborating with their peers across the island on an ongoing study that could help to reduce the long-term environmental and biological impacts of pollution. The joint project has teen scientists studying heavy metals in the local environment, to determine their effect on living organisms such as plants, oysters and insects. The Doshi STEM students met recently with students from Southampton and Shelter Island high schools to organize, analyze and compare data. The Nassau BOCES scientists combined their findings from Caumsett State Historic Park and a local superfund site (a federally sanctioned pollution cleanup site) with those of their Suffolk County peers, who conducted testing in Peconic Bay and the Shinnecock Canal. With the help DANCE LESSON - Matt Del Rosario of the internationally renowned Pilobolus Brookhaven Dance Theater joined Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) of Laboratory Principal Dr. AJ Hepworth; LIHSA Dance Instructor Dina Denis and a select group of National environmental scientist teen dancers from the school’s dance department. The internationally renowned Pilobolus Dance Theater recently visited Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) to conduct a Master Class. A select group of 10 dance students studied under professional dancer Matt Del Rosario, who has taught master classes nationwide. The LIHSA students learned an original, intricate and intensive dance routine choreographed by the Pilobolus Dance Theater. After the rigorous routine,

Environmental Study Continued From 29 went on. “It gives us a wider range of sources and more information to work with.” “It’s really interesting discovering the pollutants in our environment and figuring out how they affect us,” said classmate Meghna Girdhar, a Hicksville High School
ninth grader. “Once you know what’s there, you can determine where it’s coming from. It’s a thinking process, and I love to elaborate on all the details. There’s a lot we can do with the information we’ve collected.” While the main goal is education, Ms. Galasso believes that there is an
even wider benefit to this project. “Working collaboratively gives us a bigger picture of Long Islanders’ impact on their environment,” she said. “We’re answering important questions, such as, ‘How is this affecting us, both now an in the long run?’”
