Post (Massapequa) and SyossetWoodbury Community Park ice rinks, when the 20152016 season officially begins the day after Thanksgiving on Friday, November 27th, . Once again, Town residents can enjoy this popular winter sport at prices that make it a great value for your recreation dollar. General admission for Oyster Bay Town residents for two-hour public skating sessions at both rinks will be $2.00 for ages two to four, $4.00 for ages five through 17, $5.00 for ages 18 and older, $2.00 for senior citizens 60 and older and $3.00 for Town veterans, volunteer firefighters and auxiliary police with identification. Quilt Viewing In an effort to heighten awareness, spark conversation and commemorate those who lost their lives to HIV/ AIDS, the Massapequa School District will host a public viewing of the AIDS Memorial Quilt on Thursday, December 3rd, from 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the Massapequa High School Baldwin Auditorium. The event is being held in close proximity to World

AIDS Day, December 1st, and is part of the district’s annual HIV/ AIDS Awareness Week, November 30th-December 4th. During this time, state-mandated, ageappropriate lessons will be taught to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Three quilt panels are being provided by the Names Project Foundation, the custodian of the 54-

ton handmade tapestry that consists of more than 48,000 panels dedicated to more than 94,000 individuals. All community members are encouraged to attend this educational event and support the district’s ongoing efforts to ensure the health and safety of its students. Massapequa Pays Tribute

In tributes streaming with patriotic songs, heartfelt speeches and standing ovations, students and staff in the Massapequa School District showed their gratitude for military veterans and active-duty soldiers, who later sat down with Berner Middle School students to share their experiences during “Take a Vet to School Day.” Tributes at Alfred G. Berner Middle School, and Lockhart and McKenna elementary schools reflected on the sacrifices made by those who served and the impact their service has had on the country today. Students in red, white and blue recited historical facts about Veterans Day and sang patriotic songs. Military roll calls of honor for living and deceased veterans were conducted, followed by the playing of the funeral dirge “Taps.” At McKenna, Boy Scouts Michael Augello and Lucas Marsh folded and presented a flag to the family of local hero Army Captain Gregory Durso, and a tribute was made in his honor by sixth grader Brandy Mener. McKenna kindergartners also showed their gratitude by singing “You’re a Grand Old Flag” as they waved little American flags in their hands, and thanking the veterans for their service. Commander Richard Begandy, of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7763 in Massapequa Park, said of veterans, “These heroes come from all walks of life but they have these things in common: courage, pride, determination, selflessness, integrity and dedication to duty to serve a cause larger than themselves….It is important to remember our forces are protecting us 24/7…sometimes

unnoticed as we enjoy the security they have provided…. Our debt to these heroes cannot be repaid but our gratitude and respect should last forever.” In addition to a formal ceremony, Berner Middle School hosted “Take a Vet to School Day,” where veterans, armed with maps, photos, medals and other memorabilia, discussed their experiences with small

groups of students in the library. Now in its ninth year, the event has grown exponentially from a handful of veterans to more than 75 today. Social studies teacher Noreen Miller brought it to Berner with a group of veterans from American Legion Post 1066 in Massapequa. Among them was her father, Jack Ryan, an Army veteran who served in the Vietnam War.

“They had such a great time, and the kids were so respectful that more and more veterans wanted to participate,” Ryan said. This year, as an added dynamic to the event, students were able to FaceTime with Army Pvt. Nicole DiGregorio, a 2008 Massapequa High School graduate stationed in Kuwait. Through a question-and-answer session, they gained a contemporary perspective of what it’s like to serve in the military today. “Take a Vet to School Day” is a nationwide program developed by The History Channel which includes a documentary about Veterans Day as well as free resources for teachers that are available on www.veterans.com. Students research and write about Veterans Day in their classrooms before entering the program and complete follow-up assignments, including writing letters to those in active duty. “To have face-to-face time with veterans and hear their stories is something you cannot get in a textbook,” Miller said. In other tributes, East Lake second graders had discussions about veterans and wrote letters of gratitude to those serving in the United States military. Letters were sent to a VA hospital and the non-profit organization, “Thanks a Million,” which distributes them to U.S. troops serving all over the world.

On Tuesday, October 27th, 2015, I was a witness to history. Fairfield School turned 90 and I was there! Our school was once called Massapequa Avenue School. Some of the things I learned about school in the early days was that if you looked outside, you would see the people playing polo. Polo is when you are on a horse and you have a certain type of stick and a wooden ball. Also, if you want to play baseball at recess, you have to be picked to play. Sometimes, you do not get picked or there is no room

for the kids to play. The invention that inspired me the most was the Band-Aid, which was made by Earle Dickson. He made the Band-Aid in the 1920’s in Highland Park, New Jersey. It is important because there would be a lot of people with cuts if not for him. It happened when Earle Dickson placed gauck on his wife’s cuts and they got better. I can relate to the Band-Aid because I always get hurt. The event the inspired me the most was 90’s Jazz. This took place in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is important

because, without 90’s Jazz, there would be no Jazz music today. It happened when the military people came back and they “wanted life to be light and happy.” I am connected to 90’s Jazz because I play the flute. I love Jazz, and my nana was born in the 1920’s and she loved Jazz. As you can see, the 1920’s was an inspiring time because they gave us a lot of new inventions, like eskimo pie, the traffic light, the jukebox and the bulldozer. We still use and eat these inventions today. So what inspires you about the 1920’s?

Tradition: the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, or the fact of being passed on in this way. And so closes another Thanksgiving, filled with family, food and fond memories sure to be reflected upon in the coming years. By the time you read this, most of society will have already moved on to Christmas shopping and decorating and planning their next round of feasting and festivities. For me, as the clock strikes midnight, signaling the dawn of “Black Friday” and the close of autumnal activities, once and for all, I choose to savor this particular occasion just a bit longer. The essence of Thanksgiving is, after all, the true spirit of any holiday season

– or at least it should be. Too often, we become so caught up in the commercial clichés that we fail to truly appreciate these special moments. Just earlier today, as my own family reminisced upon occasions gone by, the recurring theme was family, friends and loved ones. The cast of characters may change from year to year, but the sentiment remains the same. While every holiday may not unfold perfectly from beginning to end – despite the “flawless” façade portrayed by most peoples’ Instagram and Facebook posts – they each hold their own place in the grand scheme of life. Time, and tradition, marches on, whether we like it or not. How we choose to spend that time will dictate the memories we make along the way and the fondness

with which we will recall them years – or perhaps mere months – from now. The hustle and bustle of the holiday season may be a hassle on the surface; but the joy it brings on a much deeper level is well worth the effort. Traditions surely vary from family to family, or even from year to year, as customs naturally evolve over time and take on varying forms. The specific nuances are not important. The togetherness, the process of coming together at this special time of year… that’s what traditions are made of. So before you head out into the fray in search of sale items over these next few weeks, stop to remember the reason we go to all this trouble. That notion should be enough to make the holidays truly happy.

They also became scientists when experimenting with mixing colors like red and yellow to make orange. “It was so exciting to see each color come alive as the students and staff wore each color of the day,” said Fairfield Principal Lori Dano. “Color week extended beyond kindergarten as the whole school participated in the wearing of the colors.”

After his discussion, he opened the floor to questions from students who prepared their remarks by watching and analyzing newscasts and videos involving the congressman. They asked questions about the presidential election, how much time he spends in Washington D.C., his stance on marijuana legalization and his greatest accomplishment. On the

election, King explained how difficult it is to win a party nomination and a presidential election, based on the varied populations that come out to vote for each, and discussed the tremendous amount of resources one needs to run for president, a reason why he didn’t put his hat in the ring. He said he spends about 40 weeks, four days a week, in the nation’s capital, and he is opposed to legalizing marijuana, except for medical reasons if it can be regulated, citing the serious drug abuse epidemic in suburbia in many part of the country. His proudest achievement, he said, is his work on the original Zadroga healthcare bill and securing homeland security funding for New York, which accounts for millions of dollars to keep the cities safe. “We are honored to once again have Congressman King address our students and provide first-hand knowledge of our political system and the issues that face our country today,” said social studies teacher Daniel Bachman, who coordinated King’s visit. “His discussion, in particular, provides an opportunity for our students to obtain a deeper understanding of terms and topics that are given on the AP exam, and his expertise in terrorism proved timely as students approached the recent terror attack on Paris with a new understanding.”

In addition to music, Courtney carries a rigorous academic course load, including Advanced Placement (AP) classes in Physics, English Language Arts and U.S. History, and is on the Principal’s List for academic excellence. She competes in Odyssey of the Mind, which challenges students to creatively problem solve by completing a series of specific tasks, and helped bring her team to the state competition twice. She also took on the leadership role of Activities Coordinator for Student Council for two years.

Nominations Needed The Town is accepting nomination forms for the 18th Annual “Women of Distinction” awards program. Each year, the Town has the privilege of honoring designated Women of Distinction in each of eight categories. Winners are recognized at a special ceremony early next year. Anyone who would like to submit a candidate for the “Women of Distinction” can fill out a nominating form, which can be found at local libraries or on the Town’s website, www. oysterbaytown.com. Applications must be received no later than Monday, January 4th. Anybody is welcome to submit an application, including those who have done so in the past and whose candidate was not selected. Women who either live or work in the Town
