Circus Comes to Fairﬁeld Students juggled and balanced different objects as the circus came to Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Professionals from Cirque Du Jour spent a week teaching students in third through sixth grades the circus arts as part of their physical education classes. In partnership with the PTA, the students participated in workshops where they juggled balls, learned how throw and

catch Chinese yo-yos and practiced walking on stilts, among other tricks, under the tutelage of trained performers. The activities helped children improve their coordination and confidence. The week concluded with a circus performance by fifth-grade students, who showcased their new skills in a daytime assembly for their Fairfield peers on November 18th followed by an evening program for families.

My Buddy occasional “betta kisses” on the tip of my finger should I venture too close to the water. Bath times resulted in sulking in the corner, burrowing behind his favorite plant and being downright obstinate when it came time to transfer from his larger, luxurious suite of a tank to his tiny “starter” bowl. Those I told about Buddy initially reacted with skepticism that a mere fish could actually possess almost humanlike qualities. That was, until they met him. It was impossible not to be charmed by this tiny fish with the big fins and the even bigger personality. And boy did he love the attention! It was about six months in that I worked Buddy into my “In Step” column as a “guest columnist,” taking on the role of my spokesfish and taking over the masthead with his “In Swim” moniker. The tremendous feedback I received from readers, the majority of whom were complete strangers, was overwhelming, with some even suggesting the makings of a future children’s book series.

Milestones came and went, from his widely celebrated 1st Betta Birthday, to Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, summer barbeques and everything in between, with Buddy often joining my company in his tiny bowl on the dining room table or setting up shop on the coffee table in front of the television. A better life could not a betta have. Sadly, my little Buddy passed on to fishy heaven just last week. He was a fighter up until the very end, and it was truly devastating to see him go. All pets are irreplaceable, to be sure; but my Buddy holds an extremely special place in my heart, and always will. Thank you to everyone who frequently wrote in to inquire about his wellbeing and for all the support of his guest columns. In this way, he has become somewhat immortalized in print. Life won’t be the same without ya Buddy. Forever my little ﬁnned friend… Love, your Human

Buddy the Betta first entered my life on February 16th, 2015 as a “half-birthday” present to myself, with fingers crossed that this particular foray into the world of pet ownership would fare better than, say, the two carnival goldfish I had adopted the year prior. Little did I know that this little guy – my beautiful, turquoise, delta-finned Buddy – would become exactly that… a friend, a companion, an adopted member of the family, over the next 21 months. Through nearly two years of my life, from holiday gatherings to cozy weekends spent at home, just the two of us, Buddy was a constant. I’m not sure at what point I began to view him as so much more than a pet; but that he was. They say all animals have distinct personalities and characteristics, and Buddy was certainly no exception. Day after day, our routine became such that I swore he recognized me, greeted me, anxiously awaited my arrival home from work. Meal times were met with exuberant fin-waving and ﬂitting to and fro, and the

Ninth-graders at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus learned about the responsible use of social media during a workshop on November 21st. They heard from Katie Schumaker, founder of the Don’t Press Send Campaign and author of cyber education book “Don’t Press Send.” Ms. Schumaker told students that before they post something online, they should first ask themselves if it is thoughtful, helpful, inspiring, necessary and kind. She warned them that there is no privacy online and to avoid posting any information they wouldn’t want a stranger to know. Additionally, she touched on cyber bullying and spoke of the ramifications of sending explicit messages and

After speaking to the entire student body, Ms. Schumaker held small group discussions with class officers and members of the Active Minds and Chief’s Challenge clubs. All ninth-graders went home with cyber safety sheets, and an evening program was held for parents. “Every student uses some form of social media, and the purpose of this program was to teach them how to use it responsibly,” said Principal Jordan McCaw. “It is important to create an awareness that what they say and send can have real consequences. I think Ms. Schumaker’s words made an impact.”

Renée Susman, librarian at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, knows that people will be thinking about food as Thanksgiving approaches, but she also wants them thinking about books. Ms. Susman launched her Gobble Up a Good Book initiative, in which has students and staff make reading suggestions. To involve students in the process and foster

cooperation, collaboration and communication, she created a turkey on the bulletin board outside of the library. Each feather is a piece of paper shaped like an open book, and students wrote the names of books they were thankful to have read, along with the author’s name. In a nearby display case, teachers used the same book-shaped pieces of paper to post the titles of books that they think children

Meteorology Lesson

PUZZLE ANSWERS:

Students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District learned about teamwork and cooperation from people who know a little something about being part of a team, as three players from the New York Islanders visited on November 16th. Birch Lane was one of just 10 schools in the region to receive a visit through Islanders School Day. John Tavares, Andrew Ladd and Josh Bailey shared their own experiences as hockey players while talking to students about doing well in school, the importance of teamwork, treating each other with respect, staying active and eating healthy. Blue and orange posters around the room had inspirational phrases

such as “Teamwork,” “Leadership” and “Hard Work.” On working hard in school, Tavares said, “When you see the results, it’s very rewarding.” Added Ladd about teamwork, “It’s a lot easier to get things done when you’re working together with people with the same goals.” In order to be considered, the school had to submit a letter detailing its character education initiatives. Social worker Denise Glenn, adviser of Students Against Destructive Decisions, spoke of the anti-bullying campaigns at the school, as well as efforts to help people in the community through food and coat drives.

“It’s encouraging for the students to hear from someone they admire,” Ms. Glenn said of the visit from the Islanders. “It ties everything together that the children have been working for to create a team spirit, a community spirit.” To give an example of good character within the school, Principal Stephen Aspetti read aloud an email from the teacher of fourthgrader Michael Dietrich that highlighted the exemplary way in which the student was supportive of his classmates. Following a question and answer session, the players gave autographs, as many students brought in jerseys, hats, pictures, pucks and other items to be signed.

Taking a Stand Students at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District took a stand against bullying. They participated in Anti-Bullying Week from November 14th-18th and this year’s theme was “You’re Not Alone.” Throughout the week, lessons focused on what bullying is and how it can be prevented and stopped. All students received bookmarks and blue bracelets that read, “Be Someone’s Hero! Stand Up to Bullying.” They saw a video on bullying in their classes and attended a PTAsponsored assembly by

Hip Pickles that centered on positive character attributes. All students created an “I can stand up to bullying by…” activity sheet in which they drew a picture and wrote about ways to stop a bully. These projects were turned into a video collage, which was shared online with the school and the community at the end of the week. The children also signed a banner in which they pledged to take a stand against bullying, wore blue to show their solidarity and discussed the lessons of the week with their teachers.

Islanders Talk Teamwork

Third-grader Greg Parmiter said if someone is being bullied it is important to tell an adult. His classmate, Vivian West, added that when someone stands up to a bully they should use nice words to tell them to stop. “Anti-Bullying Week reinforces our commitment to educating and raising awareness of bullying prevention,” said Assistant Principal Bryan Piotrowski. “This year’s campaign, ‘You’re Not Alone,’ offers the perfect opportunity for our school and community to get together against bullying.”
