for large and small dogs with the majority of the funding for this project coming from a grant acquired by State Senator Carl Marcellino. In regard to Massapequa, the current dog park is located on a large parcel of land in Nassau County and we believe improvements would benefit pet owners. The town has long considered whether a new dog park should be constructed or the current facility upgraded to include paving over the dirt parking lot and adding other improvements. New programming was added as well, including activities for pets and their owners, the first of which was held on Sunday, October 21, 2018. The dog park in Massapequa has an adjoining parcel of land that is also owned by the Town of Oyster Bay. Even though it is located on the west side of County Line Road, it is in fact in Suffolk County. The Town of Oyster Bay never had intentions to deprive dog park facilities in Massapequa from our residents. We have stated this since day one. The Town of Oyster Bay sought to appraise and determine the value of properties as one of the many factors needed in reaching the decision of whether or not to move the park to an adjacent or nearby location. How to Make Use of a Jacket “Don’t seek, don’t search, don’t ask, don’t knock, don’t demand... relax. If you relax, it comes. If you relax, it is there. If you relax, you start vibrating with it.” - Osho Much of our suffering comes from our unwillingness to relinquish control. Everything from large sweeping intersections in our lives to the smallest details that plague us daily when they don’t go our way; we often operate under the faulty belief that we can use force, manipulation, or anger to bend the universe to our will. Coming up to New York after living in Florida, my nine year old son grew accustomed to living his life in t-shirts and shorts, unencumbered by the heavy winter gear that New Yorkers wear. As the weather has grown colder, he has been resistant to wearing his jacket, hat and gloves; instead insisting on layering t-shirts and sweatshirts. For weeks now, our morning routine has included me begging, pleading, warning him about getting sick, threatening to take away various priviliges, and at

times, shouting in exasperation. “JUST PUT YOUR JACKET ON!” In reality, the thought of him getting sick, or even what the bus driver or teacher would think of me were my motivating factors for my panic. It was my own discomfort about the situation. What I’ve realized is, ultimately, I don’t have control. My job as his parent is to empower him with love, values, ideas, compassion, and the information he needs to make the right decisions for himself. All I can do is sit back and allow him to experience the world. This morning, as we were waiting together for the school bus to arrive, I observed that my son’s hat and gloves were inside his backpack; his winter jacket slung over his arm. None of these items were actually on his body. I said, “Uh... you know, carrying a hat and gloves, and holding your winter jacket won’t keep you warm. They only work if you wear them.” He replied, “I know that.” I nodded my head in mutual understanding and said, “Okay, good. I just want to be sure that

you’re aware of how the whole process works.” He stared at me and let out a sheepish giggle. Slowly, he reached inside his backpack for his hat and placed the hat on his head for warmth. Then, as if to say, “I’m not doing this because you want me to. It’s my decision,” he slung his arms through his jacket. As a singular stance of independence, he skipped the gloves. I was okay with that. The allowing and the space of freedom it created caused my son to put on his hat and jacket. It was more effective than the begging, the pleading, the vague threats of catching a cold. In life, the more we try to control others or our circumstances and surroundings, the more our desired outcome eludes us. Be in a state of allowing. Just as you would allow the water from a babbling brook to seamlessly run through your fingers rather than trying to clench and trap the water in your hands, allow things to simply be as they are, and watch as your suffering diminishes.

Nearly 100 young actors will bring the 1989 Disney animated film “The Little Mermaid” to the stage in this weekend’s musical production hosted by the Berner Middle School Theatre Box Players. Well-known songs like “Part of Your World,” “Under the Sea” and “Kiss the Girl” will be performed in the twoact play. Leading cast members include Sophia Diaz as Ariel, Cooper Arbisi as Prince Eric, Nolan Tucker as Sebastian, Timothy Rogers as King Triton, Luke Raymond as Flounder, Emmet Blaney as Scuttle and Arianna Surrow as Ursula. The show is directed by choral teacher Katie Tauches. An ensemble of music teachers from the Massapequa School District and high school music students comprise the pit orchestra. When people throughout Nassau County receive hot meals on Thanksgiving, they will also receive colorful cards made by students at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Library media specialist Melinda Alford and her husband have spearheaded an effort for more than 20 years to provide a happy Thanksgiving for people who are alone on the holiday. It started with dinner at a restaurant

and has transformed into meal deliveries to more than 300 homes throughout the county, including Massapequa, by 50 volunteers. Ms. Alford said that a person’s economic situation is not considered. The volunteers are encouraged to spend some time on Thanksgiving with each person they visit, which is just an integral part of the experience as the homemade food they are providing. Day of the Dead Celebration

Howitt Middle School teacher Patricia Caracappa introduced her Spanish language students to the fiesta called Día de los Muertos—Day of the Dead—widely observed from October 31-November 2 in Mesoamerican cultures. This particularly Mexican holiday is celebrated to remember family and friends who have passed away. To prepare for the holiday, people build altars in their homes, businesses, and schools— placing favorite foods and beverages alongside photographs of their departed loved ones—to invite their spirits to return and enjoy the essence of their offerings. Over the course of the three-day celebration, thousands of

people will visit cemeteries to clean gravesites and decorate the gravestones of beloved family members with orange marigolds— aka Day of the Dead flowers. Inside the cemeteries, people light candles, play guitar, and share meals late into the night. Markets are filled with sugar skulls, Pan de Muertos, skeletal decorations, and a special incense which is burned on the altars. Ms. Caracappa prepared a collaborative lesson for her eighth-grade students using poetry, art, and food to teach them about the many sides of the celebration. First, she had them write short poems to honor someone in their life who has passed. Then she arranged for a multistop field trip, beginning

at The Chocolate Duck on Main Street. There, students were tasked with decorating skulls with chocolate and sugar. These skulls—called calaveras— have become the most common symbol for the holiday. The class wrapped up their lesson with an authentic Mexican lunch at Cara Cara Restaurant in Farmingdale. “We write poetry and honor loved ones through the arts,” said Ms. Caracappa—who is certified to teach both Spanish and art. “I wrote my thesis on memorials as an art form and have always been inspired by how various cultures honor loved ones who have passed.”

The Book Fairies, located in Freeport, NY, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that accepts donations of new and gently used books and connects them with organizations throughout all five boroughs and Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading. Some of those organizations are hospitals, schools, veteran organizations and soup kitchens. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers. The Book Fairies does more than just impact their local community; they are also dedicated to supporting literacy programs in underdeveloped nations around the world. Some of the books they receive that are in fair to average condition are packaged for partnering organizations to be shipped overseas! Since the program’s inception, they have helped build libraries in Africa, India, China, South America and the Caribbean Islands!

If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. - Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently attended the Field of Honor Ceremony held at John H. West Elementary School in Farmingdale. Supervisor Saladino joined with representatives from the school to honor veterans of past and

present for their service in protecting our nation’s freedom. Each year, local schools and organizations set up dozens of American flags, placed in precise rows, flanked by two rows of Military flags (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast

Guard & POW/MIA) in honor of Veterans Day. This is done to honor all of our veterans, those who served, those who are currently serving and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Little Mermaid Nearly 100 young actors will bring the 1989 Disney animated film “The Little Mermaid” to the stage in this weekend’s musical production hosted by the Berner Middle School Theatre Box Players.
