The children learned that Veterans Day used to be known as Armistice Day, and that it originally honored veterans who lost their lives. Now it honors all veterans, both living and deceased. The children expressed their thanks in their cards.

The sport has been gaining in popularity in recent years and has made it into Plainedge gymnasiums this year thanks to Speed Stacking Ambassador and teaching assistant at Schwarting Nicole McMahon. Stacking is considered an educational and athletic game that facilitates fitness, handeye coordination, fine

motor skills and bilateral coordination and improves cognitive function between the left and right sides of the brain. Schwarting is implementing cup stacking for all students in the school, grades K-5. “It’s a phys ed based program that is implemented all over the world,” Ms. McMahon said of the sport. “It offers a different way to teach physical education and can even translate into the classroom.” More than 484,000 students from 36 countries and 2,800 schools participated in the event, which did in fact make the Guinness Book of World Records.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Massapequa High School’s C.A.R.E (Cancer Awareness Reaching Everyone) Club teamed up with Salon Fringe of Amityville to raise $750 for Memorial SloanKettering Cancer Center.

Pink hair extensions were sold to high school students and teachers and all of the money earned went straight to SloanKettering. “The salon graciously donated their time and skills to help make the

fundraiser a success,” said Club Advisor Patricia McCarthy. “It was wonderful to see so many faculty members and students participate in this cause; even a few males participated!”

Massapequa students marked National Red Ribbon Week, October 21st through 25th, by celebrating the importance of making good choices and leading healthy, drug-free lives. The annual campaign, sponsored by National Family Partnership, aims to educate students on drug awareness and prevention, as well as support and nurture the full potential of healthy,

Students also wore the color red and were asked to donate a can of nonperishable food for “I Can Be Drug Free” Day. Similar anti-drug activities took place at East Lake Elementary School where Assistant Principal Laura Lai also read the book, “The Red Ribbon: A Story of Hope” to affirm drug free choices to the firstgrade classes. Students at Unqua Elementary School received bracelets that said, “Say No to Drugs,” and made human red ribbons on the basketball court in addition to their daily themed activities. Students in each school took the pledge to lead healthy, drugfree lives while teachers facilitated classroom lessons appropriate for each grade level.

Pumpkin Decorating Contest

In an effort to heighten awareness, spark conversation and commemorate those who lost their lives to HIV/ AIDS, the Massapequa School District will host a public viewing of the AIDS Memorial Quilt on Thursday, December 5th, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Massapequa High School Baldwin Auditorium. The event is being held in close proximity to World AIDS Day, December 1st, and is part of the district’s annual HIV/ AIDS Awareness Week, December 2nd through December 6th. During this time, state-mandated, age-

appropriate lessons will be taught to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Three quilt panels are being provided by the Names Project Foundation, the custodian of the 54ton handmade tapestry that consists of more than 48,000 panels dedicated to more than 94,000 individuals. All community members are encouraged to attend this educational event and support the district’s ongoing efforts to ensure the health and safety of its students. Massapequa High School Peer AIDS Educators will be on hand to answer any questions.

The Fourth Grade class from Grace Day School enjoyed touring one of the oldest structures in southeastern Nassau County. As part of their history class, they are learning about the state of New York and a tour of Massapequa’s

Old Grace Church was the perfect lesson. Members of The Massapequa Historical Society gave the students a tour of Old Grace Church, est. 1844, the Floyd-Jones Cemetery, est. 1892, and the red house, called the Servant’s Cottage, est. 1870.

Students got a first-hand feeling of daily living at the turn of the century. From ice boxes and infant high-chairs to Massapequa Indian arrowheads, the fourth grade thoroughly enjoyed learning this history lesson.

CHIEFS CHAMPIONS - It was a historic day for the Chiefs as both the boys and girls varsity soccer teams capped the season with state championship titles. The win was the first state championship for the boys, who defeated Fairport, 1-0 at SUNY Cortland and the fifth for the girls, who beat North Rockland, 2-1 in Middletown, N.Y. The winning goal for the boys team was scored by sophomore Dylan Nealis, who just the day before scored the winning goal in the AA state semifinal. The perseverance of the girls team shined through as the winning goal, scored by Alyssa Iannuzzi, came with just seven minutes remaining in the game. Olivia Stegner scored the first goal in the first half of the game. Coach Bruce Stegner said the win was deserved as the Chiefs dominated the play.
