Red Ribbon Week, the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the nation, was celebrated at elementary schools around the Massapequa School District. The campaign focuses on the importance of leading healthy lifestyles and making good choices, and encourages students to pledge their support to live drug-free through the symbol of a red ribbon. This year’s theme, “Respect Yourself. Be Drug Free” was carried out with a host of theme days, assemblies and activities centered on

free, writing about how to stay healthy, and listening to Assistant Principal Bryan Piotrowski read the book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” by Dr. Seuss and discussing connections in the book to making good choices. At the end of the week, students discussed what they learned and were encouraged to express that knowledge by writing letters or drawing pictures. In addition to the program, the Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) club made a commitment to promoting the importance of healthy living and selfrespect. They spent their first SADD meeting writing the positive message of “Respect” on the playground fence at East Lake School to remind everyone to respect themselves. McKenna and Unqua elementary schools also participated in theme days, such as wearing their clothes backwards for “Turn Your Back on Drugs” day and wearing hats for “Put a Lid on Drugs” day. They also wore red to show their unity against drugs.

The award recognizes programs that are unique and effective, and enrich English Language Arts instruction by offering creative opportunities to students and staff. The honor was presented at the council’s annual conference in Albany to members of Massapequa High School’s English Department. “This award is a testament to the ingenuity and talent of our English teaching staff, which has worked so hard to deliver a program that greatly impacts the way students express themselves, not only to college admissions officers, but to those they encounter

throughout college and into their careers,” said Kevin Harrington, the district’s K-12 Curriculum Associate for English. “We are proud of their achievements as well as what our students have accomplished by participating in the program.” The College Essay Night Workshop is offered to students and their parents/ guardians in both the fall and spring semesters to help students discover their voices and creatively mine their pasts for the purpose of writing effective college admissions essays. Brainstorming activities assist them in finding a meaningful essay topic, and they learn how to apply all the steps of the Writing Process as they choose topics, develop their personal essays, and provide

insightful reflections to end their essays. In addition to experiencing a variety of strategies for producing these essays, several successful essay models are presented. They also learn the key components of the college essay, what colleges are looking for in these essays, and how to write an essay that will not only assist them in getting into college but also be significant to them and their lives. After documentation about the program was submitted to the NYSEC for consideration for the award, a member from its executive board conducted a site visit, which included meeting with teachers, visiting the workshop and meeting with both parents and students following the workshop.

CHURCH CLEANUP - Troop 776 has been helping the Presbyterian Community Church out with a fall and spring clean up for the last couple of years to show our appreciation for the Church allowing us to have our meetings in their hall. The Scouts give up three hours on a Saturday morning in November and March/April to help rake leaves and clean up around the Church grounds. This year, they were joined by some of the Cub Scouts from Pack 776, who are also sponsored by the Presbyterian Community Church.

FLAG RETIREMENT - Local legislators recently attended Tobay Beach to pay respect during the American Veterans Post 88 Massapequa Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony. Woman’s Club Meets

The Massapequa Woman’s Club held its first meeting after the summer recess at Massapequa Reformed Church on October 14th. Prior to the business part taking place, Jane Hollinshead introduced Rhonda Denet (pictured), who provided an excellent history of R&B music and then entertained the group with several songs. Many members took the opportunity to dance

along. At their November meeting, the program will be “Senior Fraud” by Nassau County Police/ Public Affairs. On October 28th, the Child Welfare Committee met at the Bar Harbor Library to allocate monies to four needy families recommended by St. Rose Lima and Marie Regina Outreach. The committee reviewed the needs of the

families and allocated funds according to the information supplied by the Outreach groups. The Committee is busy preparing for their Fundraiser Brunch at Southward Ho Country Club on November 29th, which will continue to benefit needy families with children in the Massapequa’s.

CHAMBER HONORS OFFICERS - The Massapequa Chamber of Commerce granted The Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award to 7th Precinct Officers Jason Kogan and Steven Deng in recognition of their dedication to protect and serve the public. Both officers exemplify integrity and courage in their commitment to public service in preserving the lives and property of the citizens in their community.
