band bracelets and came up with an idea. Knowing October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Jason figured he could turn his crafting skills into a fundraiser for breast cancer research. After discussing the idea with family members, Jason made a sign out of pink Oaktag, dressed himself in pink attire — everything from socks to sweatshirts to sunglasses — and set up a stand, much like a lemonade stand, on the sidewalk of his Massapequa Park home, located near Sunrise Highway. He displayed his pink creations, priced at $2.00 per bracelet, $1.00 per ring. By the end of the first October weekend he raised more than $100. Fired up by the response, Jason tripled his pink wardrobe for the cause and rode his bike around his

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson reminds residents that the Town is accepting nomination forms for the 16th Annual “Women of Distinction” Awards program. “Each year, the Town has the privilege of honoring designated ‘Women of Distinction’ in each of eight categories,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Winners will be recognized in March 2014 in celebration of Women’s History Month.” The Councilwoman noted that anybody who would like to submit a candidate for the “Women of Distinction” need only fill out a nominating form and submit to the Town. RAGAMUFFIN PARADE - Massapequa Park’s Rag-A-Muffin Parade was recently held. Town officials, local legislators, members of the Knights of Columbus, parents and lots of children turned out for the occasion on a beautiful fall day. The event was held on the weekend prior to Halloween, so the youngsters delighted in the excitement of wearing their costumes prior to Halloween and having an extra day of fun.
VETERANS VISIT - First graders at Grace Episcopal School in Massapequa welcomed a special visit from over 20 time-honored veterans and Nassau County Legislator Michael Venditto in honor of Veterans Day. Each veteran went to visit a classroom where students prepared questions to ask them. The veterans educated the children about their service in the armed forcesm and the students were very inspired by the vets’ medals of honor and recollections of war.
THANK YOU CEREMONY - A ceremony thanking the Town for the building of a new Challenger Baseball field at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa was recently held. Challenger Baseball is a Little League-sanctioned program that gives children with special needs the opportunity to play baseball in an environment structured to their abilities. Building upon the success of the first Challenger Field that was created at John J. Burns Park, the Town created another dedicated field. Both fields meet the special needs of the players.
DECK HOCKEY OPENING DAY - Players from the St. Rose of Lima Deck Hockey League took a break in the action to pose for the camera. The ball, which is used in deck hockey in place of the traditional puck, was recently dropped on the fall season. Deck hockey is played on a flat surface with the players on foot, as opposed to traditional ice hockey in which the players wear skates. PAWS FOR PARKINSONS - The 2013 Optimism Walk and Paws for Parkinson’s event was recently held at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa. The annual event, which benefits Parkinson’s research, featured a one mile walk through the park, as well as Halloween themed activities, refreshments, giveaways, raffles, doggie costume contest, and a concert by “Any Way You Want It,” the renowned Journey tribute band. Many dog owners brought their best friends to the park to enjoy a fun day in the crisp autumn air, while also helping out a worthy cause.
SLEEPY HOLLOW 5K - The 13th Annual Sleepy Hollow 5K Charity Run Walk was recently held at Brady Park in the Village of Massapequa Park. Proceeds from the event benefited the Hagedorn Little Village School for Developmentally Disabled Children, which provides educational and therapeutic services to children with special needs. In addition to the 5K race, there was also a Kids Fun Run, so children could participate in the enjoyable event.

Pre-School Program Offered Massapequa High School’s Family and Consumer Science Department, in conjunction with its Child Study course, will once again sponsor a preschool program for district residents. High School students enrolled in the course have successfully completed the Parenting and Child Development course and are now ready for a
hands-on approach to learning, according to Anna Gregg, child study director for the district. The students will plan, prepare and implement interdisciplinary activities within a thematic unit for the preschool students. Preschool will begin the week of March 10th, 2014 and continue for about 11 weeks until “graduation”. There are two sessions — Tuesdays and Thursdays or
Wednesdays and Fridays, each from 9:55 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Children must attend both days of the chosen session. A donation of $60 per child to help defray expenses is encouraged. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella reminds all civic organizations and Chambers of Commerce in the Town that they are welcome to be listed on, and linked to, the Town’s website, www. oysterbaytown.com. “The Town is always looking for ways to make the Town’s website as informative and convenient as possible for residents,” Councilman Muscarella stated. “By listing civic organizations and Chambers of Commerce, residents in our communities have a handy
resource for contacting the organizations that represent them. It also gives the organizations more exposure and an opportunity to expand their membership. Many civics and chambers already participate. from the full brunt of Hurricane Sandy,” said refuge manager Michelle Potter. “We will focus our restoration efforts on returning the ecological functions of these marshes by removing invasive plants, allowing native plants to return and restoring natural tidal flows. The restoration efforts will provide important wildlife habitat and enhance the refuges’ value for coastal protection.” The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has awarded contracts to two New York companies to begin cleanup and tree removal efforts at eight national wildlife refuges on Long Island. Coastal Environment Group, Inc. received a $2.5 million contract for the debris removal. The company is a small, minorityowned business based in Edgewood, NY. It has worked with the federal government on major environmental projects including Hurricane Katrina response and remediation at Superfund sites, and has committed to hiring local workers and supporting local businesses. Coastal Environment Group will begin with aerial and ground damage assessments to develop a project plan. Debris removal should begin in the next few weeks. SavATree, a tree
removal company with offices in Brookville and Southampton, NY, will remove downed trees that are causing public safety hazards at several refuges. Tree removal will begin in the next few days. Both companies will take precautions to minimize environmental damages during the project. Service biologists and independent project inspectors will advise crews and monitor progress. For safety considerations, it may be necessary to close national wildlife refuge areas during periods of heavy work. The public will be notified of any closures in advance. The $11 million marsh restoration project will restore and enhance 432 acres of salt marsh at the Wertheim and Seatuck National Wildlife Refuges and the Lido Beach Wildlife Management Area, in the Long Island towns of Shirley, Islip and Hempstead in Suffolk and Nassau Counties. Restoration and mitigation
projects are part of a comprehensive, multiagency Hurricane Sandy Resiliency plan that Department of the Interior Secretary Sally Jewell recently announced in advance of the storm’s one-year anniversary. The refuge has just begun project planning and will update the community as contracts are awarded and work moves forward. Long Island refuges include 6,500 acres of important nesting, wintering and migratory stop-over locations for hundreds of species of birds, and hosts 465,000 visitors annually. The refuges also protect threatened and endangered species, fish and other wildlife, and serve as natural extreme weather buffer zones for many of the island’s populated areas.
