Through a request for proposal (RFP) process we will award sub-grants to community partners. We couldn’t do the work we do without the support of the Red Cross. We are certain that this grant will go far and wide in helping families with urgent needs to put the pieces back together again.” John Miller, CEO, American Red Cross on Long Island, said he was proud of the collaborative efforts of the CDC and United Way in helping Sandy survivors. “The Red Cross is committed to helping all Sandy survivors recover and rebuild, and joining forces with local non-profit community entities like CDC and United Way will increase our ability to help people who need it most.” Superstorm Sandy is the
largest U.S. operation by the Red Cross in more than five years, and thanks to the public’s generous support, the Red Cross has received $308 million in donations for Sandy emergency relief and recovery efforts. As of September 30, the Red Cross has spent or committed $280 million – more than 90 percent of the donated funds. Donations to the American Red Cross after Superstorm Sandy have led to clear signs of progress and hope through New York and New Jersey nearly one year after the storm. As of now, the Red Cross has also partnered with and funded numerous communitybased organizations to support the recovery of individuals and families affected by Sandy. These partners include Brooklyn Community Foundation, City Harvest, Feeding America, Food Bank For New York City, Friends of Rockaway, Health and Welfare Council of Long Island, Island Harvest, Jewish Community Council of Rockaway Peninsula, Local Initiatives Support Corporation, National Baptist Convention USA, National Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters, New York Disaster Interfaith Services, Operation Hope, Points of Light Foundation, Salvation Army, Save the Children, Staten Island Alliance,

The American Red Cross has awarded $2.35 million in grants to support longterm recovery services for people affected by Superstorm Sandy on Long Island. The Community Development Corporation of Long Island, LLC, a nonprofit subsidiary of Community Development Corporation of Long Island (CDCLI), will receive a $2 million grant. CDCLI will use the funding to support mold remediation for homes flooded by Superstorm Sandy. The organization expects to provide services to 325 households beginning this month and continuing for the next 12 months. “We are grateful to the American Red Cross for their generous commitment, which will enable CDCLI to expand its mold remediation services to assist residents across Long Island who were impacted by Superstorm

Evolving Over Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan First it was small groups of college Journalism students at my alma mater, then it progressed to high school newspaper staffs at an awards ceremony… and now add an elementary school newspaper club to my public speaking repertoire. Who would have thought? There was a time when the mere mention of the dreaded words, “oral presentation,” would strike a chord of fear deep within. As soon as the syllabus for the year was handed out back in high school and college, the anxiety began. What would I say? Would I use note cards and attempt to ad lib? Should I write out each word and read from it, never daring to glance up or make
eye contact with my audience? What if I just “winged” it, as they say, and worked it all out on the spot? Well, with rare exception, I can pretty much assure you that two of the three options NEVER happened. Rather, I was a big fan of: write it out, rehearse it to the point of practically memorizing every line anyway, but don’t dare stray from the script – after all, you might mess it up, miss a word, lose your place, whatever… and we couldn’t have that! What captivating presentations they must have been. Fast forward to the present day when, by virtue of my career, I have been afforded several opportunities to speak to those up-and-coming students in the field, ranging from the age of 8 to … whatever age it is college
students are these days. Me. Of all people. They must assume I can intelligently speak on things of a journalistic nature, having been employed in this area for the better part of the last nine years. And so, in the interest of evolving to meet these expectations, I have tentatively taken on these speaking engagements, preparing for each in my own unique way – and hoping, fingers crossed, that I can make an adequate impression. So far, so good. Practice does – eventually – make perfect. I will never possess the natural gift that others do; however, I no longer cringe at the prospect of an audience either. I suppose it’s fortunate that the majority of my job can be conducted via the written word.

Spirits were high despite overcast skies among 650 walkers from 63 teams who turned out on Sunday, October 6th, to raise more than $68,000 in Stony Brook Medicine’s second annual Take Steps for Crohn’s & Colitis 5K Walk on the Stony Brook University campus. The walk, which raises funds for medical research as well as awareness in the community of the devastating effects of digestive diseases, is a joint effort of Stony Brook Medicine and the Long Island chapter of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). In addition to the participants, more than 100 volunteers came out to help. The day began with prewalk festivities, including music and activities for kids, followed by the 2.3mile walk, which was
kicked off with music from the Stony Brook University Marching Band. Among the largest fundraising groups was the Stony Brook Medicine team – which was organized by Ellen Li, MD, PhD, Professor and Chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Stony Brook University School of Medicine; and Ramona Rajapakse, MD, Associate Professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology – raised more than $5,700, which will be designated to fund CCFA’s research, professional and patient education, and outreach programs. Among the walkers were patients, family members, friends, staff from Stony Brook Medicine and community members. “Events like these contribute greatly to our efforts to educate the community about
digestive diseases,” Dr. Li said. “Building awareness and gathering research support for Crohn’s disease and colitis strengthens our ability to make real progress towards a cure.” Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative colitis (UC) are inflammatory diseases of the bowel, broadly categorized as inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD. EMS DRILL - NuHealth participated in a drill which took place at Zach’s Bay, it was a simulation of a plane crash. Twenty-two patients were transported to NUMC for their multiple casualty incident (MCI) drill by the FDNY and Yonkers MERV buses. The emergency departmeNt staff registered and triaged and treated all of the patients that came in with ease. The hospital first activated a HICS level 1, then elevated to a 2 when they were made aware of the number of patients coming. The trauma team and surgery responded to the ED immediately for the drill. There was great team work between the EMS community and the hospital staff.

RECORDING ANCIENT TIMES - The 6th Graders at Grade Day School in Massapequa recently learned about Cuneiform in their Social Studies unit on Mesopotamia c.5000BC. The Sumerians of Mesopotamia developed a system of writing called Cuneiform, which helped them to record their transactions of trading goods. Grace students made their own clay tablets onto which they inscribed exemplary sales of grain and livestock.

“Ish” Collaboration Art teacher Dorothy Veltre and librarian Sandy Dorfman teamed up to deliver an interdisciplinary lesson to Fairfield Elementary School students centered on the life lesson in the children’s book, “Ish,” by Peter H. Reynolds. “Ish” shows readers that being creative and thinking outside the box is more important than trying to do things perfectly according to what society dictates. The main character, Ramon, loves to draw and painstakingly tries to get his pictures “just right.” After months of trying he gives up, only to later discover that his
younger sister took his artwork and made a picture gallery in her bedroom. She tells Ramon that his vase of flowers is one of her favorites; it looks vaseish. Ramon starts thinking of his art is an “ish” way, which unleashes his creativity and gives him new motivation to hone his talents. In an effort to inspire students to think and draw with free-flowing creativity, Dorfman guided students in analyzing the text of the book, its message and how it can relate to one’s own life, and Veltre challenged students to draw their own interpretations of an “ish”
drawing based on what they have learned from the book. “With the Common Core Learning Standards in place, interdisciplinary lessons are more important than ever before,” Veltre said. “By partnering with Ms. Dorfman, students analyzed the story and their artwork with not only visual imagery but with emotions and feelings as well. Students relate to the story because it can happen in real life; the struggle with perfection or to always be right. This book shows students that it is truly okay to be “ish!”

DIGGING PINK - The Massapequa Varsity and Junior Varsity Volleyball teams held their Sixth Annual “Dig Pink” Event recently. At this event, the Massapequa volleyball teams each dedicate a home match to raise funds and awareness in the fight against breast cancer. Players wear pink attire and equipment, pink volleyballs are used and the entire gymnasium becomes a sea of pink as fans attending the volleyball matches are also asked to wear pink. The annual event is held during October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
POPCORN FUNDRAISER - Massapequa Cub Scout Pack 696 raised over $600 in donations with their sale of popcorn at IGA last weekend. Scouts pictured here celebrating are: Tyler Schacht, Michael Tanner, Declan Lennan, Dominick Gambino, Nick Russo, Scott Friske, and William Arnold. Pack 696 is very grateful to the community for once again supporting the scouts and their efforts to raise money. BENEFITTING WITH BREAD - Fourth and fifth-grade students at Eastplain Elementary School in the Plaiendge School District hosted King Arthur Flour, to learn that with some math and science, a little baking instruction, and good flour, they can bake delicious bread from scratch while helping others. King Arthur Flour donated baking ingredients, to students so families can voluntarily bake two loaves of bread together at home. Students are being asked to bring one of their finished loaves in for donation to a local community organization in November.
KEY CLUB COSTUME DONATION - Members of the Plainedge High School Key Club held a Costume Drive throughout the month of October to benefit the local Boys and Girls Club. Thanks to the generosity of students and staff, more than 60 costumes were collected for donation and delivered to the club several days before Halloween. CHURCH CITATION - A ribbon-cutting ceremony for Center Point Church in Massapequa was recently held, and Lead Pastor Brian McMillan presented with a citation. Local Town officials extended best wishes to the members of the church. Center Point Church, a Christian place of worship, gathers people from all different walks of life, from Queens to Suffolk.
FALL TASTING FESTIVAL - The inaugural Fall Tasting Festival and Basket Raffle was recently held in Massapequa. The event raised funds for the Peter J. Schmitt Memorial Foundation, which was founded in memory of Nassau County Legislator Peter Schmitt, and will support two causes that were very important to him: the Massapequa Historical Society and the Massapequa High School Key Club Scholarship, which is funded by the Massapequa Kiwanis Club. Guests enjoyed food and spirits from establishments in and around Massapequa.

MAYORAL VISIT - Massapequa Cub Scout Pack 696 met with Mayor Jeff Pravato of Massapequa this week to fulfill part of their citizenship requirement. Mayor Pravato spent the first part of their visit answering questions and explaining about what his job as mayor involves. Then Mayor Pravato and his staff lead the scouts on a personally guided tour of Town Hall educating them on the various departments and functions that Town Hall provides. The scouts concluded the evening by meeting with members of the Town Board and receiving a town pin, patch and history packet.
Yuwanna Landau, a nationally board-certified Adult Nurse Practitioner at Nassau University Medical Center, was honored with the LI Chapter Service Award at the Long Island Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU) Annual Gala at the Chateau Briand on October 17th. The gala is always a great opportunity for the CBTU to get out their message, as well as provide scholarships to members’ children. Yuwanna Landau’s clinical background includes work in Hospice/ Palliative Care, Home Healthcare and HIV/ AIDS primary health care. She has spent the last
13 years practicing in an AIDS designated center at Nassau University Medical Center, where she focuses on HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment for adults. Landau has also provided services to people in the aftermath of natural disasters. She was in Haiti during the 2010 earthquake providing medical care with Project Medishare, a nonprofit organization that provides comprehensive health care and development services. During Hurricane Sandy she worked with the Red Cross. In addition, Landau volunteers with Chabad Center for Jewish Living,
delivering meals to the elderly on Long Island, where she resides. She is twice a breast cancer survivor and a NYC Marathon runner. Long Island CBTU is part of the national CBTU that was founded in 1972. On Long Island, CBTU is active with many events throughout the year that raise funds to be used in the local community, including providing scholarships for deserving young students. They also contribute at least $500 per year to the American Cancer Society through the Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach.
