This presidential campaign is like no other. One candidate is a successful businessman who beat all the odds, plus 16 other Republicans, and became the Republican nominee for President. The other candidate is a lawyer and a lifetime politician, who beat Bernie Sanders and became the first woman Democratic nominee. The tone of this campaign has been quite intense throughout the primaries, the conventions and the three debates. In many ways, the country has never been more divided. You have Republican Donald J. Trump, who wants to “Drain the Swamp” of Washington D.C. and rebuild our country.
You have Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, who wants to continue with the current path we are on of big government being involved in many aspects of our lives. The media distractions have been unbearable, and arguably quite one-sided in most of their coverage. No matter who you support, nobody condones distasteful words spoken or irresponsible and potentially criminal actions taken by either candidate - and I think you know what and who I am talking about in each instance! Putting all this aside, you have a simple choice to make: Trump - who has earned money, power and fame and wants to help our country restabilize and prosper

Back in the Spotlight This year, I gingerly decided to throw my tap shoes back into the ring by enrolling in my old dance studio’s Adult Tap class, after five years of “retirement.” There is something about the camaraderie of dancing with old friends – alumni, as we are referred to – that brings back a flood of happy memories of days gone by… days spent on stage in tutus and tiaras, sequins and sparkles, smiling for the audience in the dimly lit auditorium as we performed the routines we had perfected over the last six months. So, when the opportunity presented itself this September, I decided to give it a go. I have to admit, I wasn’t
sure what to expect after such a long absence. But, to my pleasant surprise, not much has changed. The old tap shoes still fit, the hardwood floor of the studio shines just as I remembered it, and the steps… well, they’re a work in progress, week by week, as my muscle memory slowly but surely recalls the footwork that at one point had been second nature. They say that those you spend years enjoying extracurricular activities with become like a second family of sorts over time, and the dance studio is no exception – especially after 20 years of essentially growing up with the same core group of girls. Fast forward a couple of decades, and some of these

The last days of autumn are close Hardly one finds outside still a rose. Hills bathe in sun of azure blue skies Fall a magnitude of beauty supplies. Colorful leaves glide from the trees Form a carpet so birds in winter don’t freeze. The life span of flora and fauna who can tell All together is part of a magic spell.
Sunny skies, a spirited crowd and a Chiefs’ win led for a perfect day at Massapequa High School on October 15th for the annual homecoming celebration. There was excitement in the air as the parade kicked off at Massapequa Park Village Hall and traveled to the high school. Each class decorated a golf cart and banner with a different theme. The parade also featured the marching band, color guard, cheerleaders, homecoming court, student organizations, and administrators and board of education members. The grand marshal was Dr. Barbara Williams, who retired as the high school
principal in June. Since it was the final home varsity football game of the year, all senior players, cheerleaders and kickline members were introduced during a pre-game ceremony and presented yellow roses to their parents. The marching band performed the national anthem as students from the American Sign Language program signed along. The band, along with the color guard, returned to perform its DC Comics-inspired halftime show, “From Gotham to Metropolis.” There were also performances by the cheerleaders and Chiefettes. Halftime featured
the introduction of the homecoming court, with John McConnell and Sarah Whelan crowned the king and queen. Rounding out the court were the princes and princesses from each grade: Anthony Papasodero and Jessica Gruenfelder (freshman), Jo Jo Icart and Kayla Posporelis (sophomores), Christian DeNave, Jenna Morales and Kaitlyn Nightingale (juniors), and Stephen Urli and Kristen Ader (seniors). With a large crowd cheering them on, and chants of “MASS-A-PEQUA” coming from the Chief Nation corner of the bleachers, the Chiefs held off the Baldwin Bruins, 2120, to earn its fifth win of the season.

donated to the Side-Out Foundation, which awards grants to medical research organizations dedicated to providing compassionate support to breast cancer patients and their families.
encouraged to wear pink to school. There were also several activities during lunch periods. Student government officers sold Think Pink T-shirts. For a small donation, students could get their faces painted by teachers, including ribbons, hearts and other pink designs. Everyone was encouraged to sign one of several Think Pink banners hanging in
the cafeteria to show their support for people affected by the disease. The Chiefs Challenge club made the banners and also collected money for the school’s donation to the Side-Out Foundation, which supports breast cancer research. Eighthgrade member Erin O’Grady said it was important for students to do their part to help those battling the disease by
showing them “that they don’t stand alone and that they have support.” Throughout the school’s hallways, pink sheets of paper were hung with statistics about breast cancer. The Think Pink effort was led by teachers Kerry Regan, Denise Robertson, Caroline Glynn, Ed Hoffman and social worker Marissa Boulukos.

Story Comes to Life The fictional story of Trevor Cool came to life for students at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, as they took part in an interactive storytelling experience. Cory Levine of Submerge Storytelling transformed a classroom by filling it with maps, illustrations, toys and other props. Instead of reading them the story, Mr. Levine would pose questions about possible plot developments to the children and have them go through the room to look for evidence. Armed with clipboards, they wrote
down their observations before gathering together to discuss their findings. Over the course of the week, the story unfolded for the children. They searched for hidden keys and cracked secret codes. The purpose of the experience was to teach students about the different elements of a story and show them the importance of using evidence to back up their arguments. “It’s authentic learning,” second-grade teacher Mary Fusco said of the program, which she described as a hands-on way to build reading comprehension
skills. “This is really the way it should be.” The room was designed with both simple and complex clues, so students of different ages and learning abilities could succeed. Levine explained that in his made-up story about a middle-school student who breaks codes for the CIA, the children also learn about positive traits including friendship, loyalty and work ethic. Throughout the year, he will be working with students in several other elementary schools in the district.

Mounted Unit Visits The Nassau County Police Department’s Mounted Unit visited McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on October 18th. Students learned about the responsibilities of this specialized horse
patrol. The children participated in a question and answer session with the police officers. They then were able to meet and pet three horses in the unit, Artie, Charlie and Mike. “Students enjoyed

Global Reading Students at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District are sharing their thoughts about books with their peers from all over the country. Fourthgraders have been taking part in the Global Read Aloud, which runs from October 3rd through November 11th. During their weekly library period, the students video conferenced using Field Trip Zoom with classes on Long Island and in other states, including as far away as Seattle. They also used Padlet to share their answers about questions on books the
classes were commonly reading. This year, students are discussing books by Global Read Aloud’s featured author and illustrator Lauren Castillo. As librarian Tara Gonzalez reads each book, students in both classes participate in turn and talk discussions about different plot points. When she finishes, she then asks a question related to the theme of the book. For example, after sharing Castillo’s book “The Reader,” students from Lockhart and an elementary school in New Hyde Park were asked to identify their favorite
places to read and share their answers with each other. This is the second year the school has participated in Global Read Aloud. The initiative uses technology to create a global reading community. Ms. Gonzalez said it also shows children that they have the same thoughts and reflections on books as students in other schools. “It’s really to promote reading in an exciting way,” she said. “The students love coming in and seeing who we’re going to connect with.”

Pre-School Program Massapequa High School’s Family and Consumer Sciences Department, in conjunction with its Child Study course, will once again sponsor a preschool program for district residents. High school students enrolled in the Child Study course have successfully completed the Parenting and Child Development course and are now ready for a hands-on approach to learning. The students will plan, prepare and implement interdisciplinary activities within a thematic unit for the preschool students. Preschool will begin around March 9th,
2017 and continue for approximately 11 weeks to “graduation.” There are two sessions: Tuesdays and Thursdays or Wednesdays and Fridays, each from 9:55 a.m. to 12 noon. Children must attend both days of the session. A donation of $60 per child to help defray expenses is encouraged. Applications will be available by the front security desk, or in the general office of Massapequa High School, through December 23rd, and can be picked up between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Applications may also be downloaded from the Massapequa School District website, www.msd.k12.
ny.us. Copies of completed applications must be returned to the general office at Massapequa High School by Tuesday, January 3rd, 2017. To be eligible, children must be between the ages of 3, as of March 9th, 2017, and 5, but not attending kindergarten. They must also be toilet trained. Enrollment in the popular program is limited to 18 children per session and selection will be by lottery drawing with Massapequa residents and previous students receiving priority. Acceptance notifications will be emailed in late January 2017.
