Community Service The Builders Club at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District gives students the opportunity to perform meaningful community service and learn how to become good citizens. A club that started small in 2009 has grown to record numbers with more than 70 students attending the first meeting of the year afterschool on October 6th. They received their member pins, recited the membership pledge and received information packets about the club. The group is affiliated with the Massapequa Kiwanis Club, which also sponsors the TEAM BUILDING - In the team-building activity, groups had to figure out how to Massapequa High School get their balloons back without using their hands. October is Fire Prevention Month and the people in the community who know best about fire safety - volunteer firefighters - have been visiting elementary schools throughout the Massapequa School District to spread the word. On October 3rd, several members of the Massapequa Fire Department were at East Lake Elementary School

for a pair of fire safety assemblies. They talked about fire prevention in the home, the importance of smoke detectors and when to change the batteries, and how to devise an emergency escape plan. Several students were invited up to demonstrate stop, drop and roll. During each session, one teacher came up on stage to put on firefighter gear, including the boots,

Club will collect money for UNICEF. Students will be asked to wear a costume to school on Halloween and donate $1. Club members will assist Kiwanians in setting up the Field of Honor, a large display of American flags to commemorate Veterans Day, on the front lawn of Berner on November 4th. The club advisers are social studies teacher Noreen Miller and Kiwanis representative Diane Plowman. They explained that the goal is for students to come up with ideas for community service projects and “make it their club.” Past activities have included coat, blanket, food and toy drives. The Berner Middle

School chapter of Builders has received the Distinguished Club patch every year since its inception for the high level of service that students have performed. Ms. Plowman said that she expects another successful year because of the large participation. “I joined the club because I wanted to help my community out,” said chapter President Krista Garguilo, an eighth-grader. “A least one person can benefit from everything that we do.” Added eighth-grader Damien Liebob, the club secretary, “It’s an amazing club and with many new people this is going to be a great year.”

Students from the Active Minds and Chiefs Challenge clubs at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus stayed afterschool on October 5th to chalk the walk in an effort to raise awareness about mental health conditions. As part of the Chalk Out Stigma campaign, the students used colorful chalk to write positive and inspirational messages on sidewalks around the building for students to see when they arrived at school

the next day. The activity supported the National Day Without Stigma, which is aimed at ending the silence and providing a safe space for people to talk about mental health. Social worker Kim Hession said it is important to create an environment in which students feel comfortable reaching out for help by taking advantage of the resources offered at the school. At Ames, the Pupil Personnel Services team includes

guidance counselors, a psychologist and a social worker. Statistics provided by the national Active Minds organization cite that one in four Americans have a diagnosable mental health condition and one in three teenagers meet the criteria for anxiety disorder by age 18. Teachers purchased “1 in 4” buttons to raise awareness, with money supporting efforts of the Ames Active Minds chapter.

Success Story Denise Baldinger, the chairwoman of health education for the Massapequa School District, was a guest speaker at Maurer Foundation’s recent Pink Diamond Gala, which coincided with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Speakers from the Maurer Foundation visit ninth-grade health classes each year at Massapequa High School’s Ames

Campus and various classes at the main campus to provide breast cancer awareness workshops. Last year, a student from the high school attended one of the workshops and told her family about the importance of self-examinations. The student’s aunt found a lump and was able to get treatment. During Ms. Baldinger’s presentation at the gala, “A Day in

the Classroom,” she spoke about how early detection helped save the life of someone in the community. “I was proud to represent our district,” said Ms. Baldinger, who teaches health classes at Ames. “Through this partnership with the Maurer Foundation, we basically saved a woman’s life. We have a success story right here in Massapequa.”

used drumsticks and moved to music as they followed an exercise video that played on the Smart Board. The goal of the club is to provide students with an opportunity to engage in various activities that promote overall wellness. Upcoming meetings will include Zumba, aerobics and outdoor walks, and students will also learn how to make healthy

snacks. Fitness Club is open to all ninth-graders who are looking for ways to stay healthy and fit, but it also supports students in the Career and Community Connections program. They are each paired up with another Ames student during workouts as the motto of the club is “Exercise is more fun with a buddy.”

Maureen’s Haven is a local organization that helps homeless men and women around Long Island. This program brings a variety of organizations and houses of worship together to help meet the needs of the homeless during the cold winter months, which is known as their Emergency Shelter Program, starting on November 1st and running through March 1st.

The host facilities and supporting organizations provide not just a place for the homeless to sleep, but a nutritious dinner, breakfast and a packed meal to go. They provide support by embracing the values of human dignity, respect, service, compassion, teamwork, diversity and love. Recognizing the need for consistent support and services for the homeless in the region, Maureen’s Haven opened a day center in Riverhead to provide respite from the cold and year-round services for this vulnerable and growing population. The day center is the first of its kind in Suffolk County. A variety of programs are offered throughout the year. In addition to meeting their immediate needs, Maureen’s Haven strives to place individuals in supportive housing, which provides consistent shelter and case management. Over the past three years, Maureen’s Haven has placed over 30 individuals in housing, provided counseling and assistance with job search and placement, and offered

a continuum of care that has helped individuals in rebuilding their lives. After meeting recently with Maryann, the Executive Director of this wonderfully compassionate organization, and taking a tour of their day center, I came away with a much better understanding of who they are and what they do. The warm sincerity I felt while hearing her speak about the heart of this organization and experiencing what it’s like to be at their day center was quite emotional and aweinspiring. Maureen’s Haven is currently in need of various donations and volunteers. As far as donations, they need the following: latex gloves, cleaning supplies, garbage bags, toilet paper, paper towels, coffee/tea keurig pods, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and of course monetary donations. They are also in need of people to volunteer their time in the following areas at their day center: assisting in organizing their donation room, building shelves in the donation room, assisting with office work duties and assisting with cleaning up the day center. They also need men to serve as overnight staff to watch over the homeless on Monday nights at Aquebogue’s Our Redeemer Church. Penny Wise Massapequa may be a waterfront community, but recently the sailing took place in a classroom at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus. Members of the Science Club, under the direction of advisers Nicholas Donohue and Maureen Burke, tested the penny rafts they built as part of an engineering exercise. The ninth-graders were tasked with building small

boats that could withstand the weight of pennies. Each group was allowed to use only the provided materials: a 20-centimeter square of aluminum foil and either four straws or four sticks. Students had to consider scientific principles such as water displacement, surface tension, buoyancy and density in coming up with the best design. Before building their rafts, they

watched a video about how a container ship can hold so much cargo and still stay afloat. On October 18th, students in each group guessed how many pennies their raft would hold, then placed it into a fish tank full of water. Students added pennies one-by-one until the raft sank. The winning team topped out at 128 pennies.

Carvings Recreated

As part of their study on Native American history, fourth-grade students at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District have been working on totem pole art projects. The interdisciplinary assignment supported the

social studies curriculum while allowing students to develop their artistic talents. Students drafted plans of what their totem poles would look like and then used construction paper, stencils, scissors and glue

sticks to create the colorful and unique creations. Goldilocks a Hit

Massapequa High School’s annual fall drama, “Goldilocks on Trial,” had audiences laughing during evening performances of the show on October 20th and 21st. A cast of 25 students in grades 9-12 starred in the show. The play was directed by Michael LaBella and Kristina Sumakis. The lead actors were junior Tatum McMullan as Goldilocks, senior Hannah Taustine as the judge, junior Sara Gowen as District Attorney Wanda Muffinhead and sophomore Meaghan Phillips as defense attorney Wombat. Cast members described the show as a new twist on

a classic story with many hilarious “one-liners” and humor that both children and adults could appreciate. Tatum’s portrayal of the title character included a Brooklyn accent. Supporting the actors

I’m sure you’ve heard that water is good for you, but why is that? What does it do for us? That’s what I want to share with you... Water makes up the majority of our weight. The average adult body is made up of 50%-65% water. Our bodies can’t store this water, so we need to replenish it frequently. Before, when I wasn’t at my healthiest, I didn’t drink water often. I drank iced tea, lots of coffee and other juices. I always said to myself - the beverages I am drinking are made with water, that’s good enough. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I wasn’t giving my body nearly enough fresh, clean water. Now, you might ask yourself - well how much water do I need? Ideally, 64 ounces daily is a good goal. That’s eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day, a simple habit of health. I have a 32-ounce water bottle that I fill three times a day. If you’re overweight, live in a hot

As we usher in November, we tend to take stock of the year as a whole - where it stands, those goals we had intended to achieve along the way, and how the two correlate. Life is a constant evaluation in that way. While the month may be centered around the beginning of the holiday season, the concept of Thanksgiving is one that can be applied throughout the year. Perhaps this is why it is one of my least favorite holidays, simply for the fact that it seems short-sighted to designate one particular day to “be thankful.” What about the other 364? It shouldn’t take a turkey dinner and wallto-wall football games to gain that needed perspective. Before the commercialism of the “season of giving” took over, it was simply an opportunity to spend time

with family and friends, to gather over food and reminisce, and to make new memories along the way. Looking through old photo albums, the one thing that resonates through the years is the sense of togetherness that always existed; so strong you can practically see it reverberating off the pages. This is a feeling that one can only hope to recapture with each passing year. All the shopping, the cooking, the cleaning, the decorating, the wrapping… what is it for, if not that moment when everyone comes together to enjoy one another’s company. It’s the little things that matter - a special greeting card with a thoughtful inscription, remembering someone’s favorite type of dessert, a lovingly wrapped gift topped with a beautiful bow. The rest, as they say, is

Circus Comes to Lockhart under the guidance of skilled instructors. Fifth-graders spent additional time learning the skills in preparation for a performance before the rest of the student body that Friday. Each student was able to select one skill they wanted to master and perform. “It’s really great to see the hard work that they put in,” said physical education teacher Joe

Catalanotto. “It’s a really intense program and it’s awesome to see it all come together.” Mr. Catalanotto added that this is the 11th year that circus arts has been included in the physical education curriculum at Lockhart. He said it teaches the students about setting and accomplishing goals as they explore a new physical activity.

The CSI approach — color, symbol and image — has first-grade students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District analyzing literature in a different way. Students in Kimberly Kelly’s class are using the thinking routine to express their understanding of books in a nonverbal

way. Children think metaphorically by selecting a color, a symbol and an image that best represents a character in the story. Ms. Kelly learned the method while attending Project Zero Classroom training during the summer at Harvard University. The Massapequa School District and the Massapequa Community

Fund have partnered for several years to send teachers and administrators to this weeklong program, which is designed to create higher levels of student engagement in the classrooms. Ms. Kelly used the CSI approach during a study of books by author Kevin Henkes.

Students from two different grades recently came together to write poetry and explore technology at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Each fifth-grader in

Danielle Fraccalvieri’s class was paired with one or two second-graders from Mary Upton’s class. In their small groups, they wrote acrostic poems based off the word “Autumn.” The students used Chromebooks and

practiced signing in to Google Docs, editing a shared document and saving it. Computer teaching assistant Susan Corrado supported the lesson.

Striking Out Leukemia Sophomore Anthony Gazzola represented Massapequa High School at the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders in Boston. He was joined by high school students from across the nation who share his passion, ability and potential.

Help the Mighty Quinn Strike Out Leukemia was held on October 21st at John Burns Park, and it was a huge success, raising almost $6,500. All proceeds were donated from the $5 cover charge, as well as raffles,

50/50 and special event T-shirt’s. There was even a student playing the violin, and all the tips he received went to the family. Each player participating made a donation as well. All the players wore splashes of orange - orange

painted during lunch periods in exchange for a small donation. Art, health and physical education teachers painted pink ribbons, hearts and angel wings. Staff members could buy a raffle ticket for a pink solar lighthouse made by one of the technology teachers. “Anytime we can work together for such an important cause, which affects so many people on Long Island, we’re proud to do it,” said Principal Jason Esposito, who noted his appreciation for all students, staff and parents who donated to the cause and helped raise awareness.

Commitment to Health Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District marked Red Ribbon Week from October 23rd-27th with activities that encouraged students to live healthy lifestyles. The Red Ribbon Campaign is a national initiative devoted to the

health and well-being of youth. This year’s theme was “Your Future is Key so Stay Drug Free.” At Birch Lane, Red Ribbon Week was a partnership between the school and PTA. Students made “I will stay healthy by…” posters that were hung throughout the school. Some of the

ideas included exercising regularly, eating fruits and vegetables, and brushing their teeth. Children were also encouraged to wear red to school to express their commitment to making healthy choices and being drug free.

Berner Goes Pink Berner Middle School students and staff continued their commitment to wiping out breast cancer during the seventh annual Think Pink Day on October 25th. The event was one of several in the Massapequa School District during October, which is breast cancer awareness month. Berner raised money for the Side-Out Foundation, an organization that funds breast cancer research, and the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition, which provides support for people battling the disease. “This has become one of the biggest events we do here at Berner,” said health teacher Denise Robertson,

Stop and Jot is a technique used to improve reading comprehension and Jill Corson, a thirdgrade teacher at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, employs this method in her classroom.

To learn more about the library, fourth-graders at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District went on a scavenger hunt. Library media specialist Melinda Alford had students work

independently and use their existing knowledge of library resources to find certain items such as a book from the biography section, a picture book that starts with the same letter as their last name, a magazine and more.

She recently explained this strategy, which helps improve critical thinking. Students learned the benefit of stopping and thinking about what they are reading in their individually selected books. They use sticky

notes and markers to “grab a thought.” By writing down their observations, reactions, predictions and questions, students dive deeper into their reading, which ultimately creates a more meaningful and enjoyable experience.
