Since their founding in 1995, they have reached almost 350,000 high school and college students, parents, coworkers and neighbors with lifesaving information on breast health, expanded their reach internationally, training their first breast health educator from outside the United States, annually educated over 200,000 people across the world on their website and trained breast health educators in local nursing programs, exponentially increasing their impact on Long Island. This October, The Maurer Foundation has schedueld 132 breast health programs, reaching 3,300 people with life-saving information on breast selfexams, breast cancer risk factors, risk reduction, myths, facts, mammogram guidelines and more! Erik Chocianowski of Massapequa is not new to Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA). Having served as a visiting lecturer at the school for the past three years, he now takes a full-time position on the faculty, bringing his educational and professional expertise to the students in the theater department. As a visiting lecturer, Mr. Chocianowski taught scenic design, an important element of technical theater. His students learned the basics of design, drawing, 3D modeling techniques and stage terminology. As a culmination to their studies, students helped to build full sized set pieces for the various productions at LIHSA. In his new position, Mr. Chocianowski will teach a variety of topics, from special effects makeup, to puppetry, to lighting mechanics and design. “It’s amazing to be able to work with so many talented people and collaborate with professionals from diverse artistic backgrounds,” Mr. Chocianowski said of his experience at LIHSA. “The students here are so talented and bring so much passion to everything they do. Everyone is driven. They bring a lot of unique skills to the classroom.” Mr. Chocianowski brings an impressive professional background to his role as educator. He is the OwnerOperator of his original company Hatandstachery, which creates set designs and makes scenery for staged productions. He has served as a scenic carpenter for worldrenowned Spaeth Design,
creating holiday window displays for major retail outlets. Preceding his educational experience as visiting lecturer at LIHSA, Mr. Chocianowski served as faculty adviser of Roslyn High School’s Technical Theater program. In this capacity he guided students in the creation of sets for the school’s various theater productions, including Little Shop of Horrors,
Jesus Christ Superstar, The CrucibleandXanadu. “My goal is to help my students build self confidence and a sense of agency,” Mr. Chocianowski said of his current role as teacher. “I want to help them develop the skills they need to tackle any project that they come across, and to showcase their talents to professional companies within their chosen career fields.”

Mr. Chocianowski is an active member of the National Art Education Association and the Educational Theatre Association. He holds a master’s degree from SUNY Empire State College, a bachelor’s degree from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and certification in art education from Queens College.

Emotional Resilience “Don’t promise when you’re happy, don’t reply when you’re angry, and don’t decide when you’re sad.” - Ziad K. Abdelnour What does it mean to be resilient? For some, it’s the idea of bouncing back quickly after adversity. For others, it is the ability to remain stoic. Some see it as simply ones’ ability to face another day. My own definition may be counter-intuitive to some, but it is the courage to feel negative emotions, allowing the discomfort to effect you, grabbing the kernels of wisdom a negative experience brings, and then embarking upon the healing process and honoring whatever form it takes. I think it is a gross human misconception that to cry, to punch a pillow, to feel hopeless, to declare that the world is coming to an end, or any other things you need to do in the midst of grief or profound disappointment, somehow makes you not emotionally resilient. People have always observed me to be great at “bouncing back.”
What they don’t see is that I took the time I needed to be a complete mess! Yes, I said it. I take the time I need to honor the negative emotions, to give them their chance to have a field day. Then I dust myself off and move forward, feeling cleansed and renewed. It’s all part of the process. It’s a myth that strong people don’t cry. Can we put that one to bed right now, please? Those heavier, denser emotions are part of the learning experience, and they are necessary. With that being said, so is stacking the deck in your favor toward healing. Below is my cheat sheet for making it through tough, upsetting or scary times: Take a moment to STOP, look around and assess your immediate surroundings. Ask yourself if you are in any danger right in that moment. Chances are, the answer is no. Next, focus on 5 things you see around you. Then focus on 3 things you can feel around you (tactile). Third, focus on one thing you can smell. Fourth, focus on one thing you can hear.
Play classical or jazz music. I find that both of these genres of music have a soothing effect on the emotional part of the brain. Picture yourself as a character in a movie. The people around you are the supporting players. Think of the crisis before you as the script (the plot), and you as delivering the ultimate Oscarworthy performance. After all, life is a grand illusion anyway, and it is a safe bet to assume that you have starred in many other dramas, as well as some great comedies, in your lifetime. Go do something you enjoy. No matter how despondent you may feel, tell yourself you are going to take a short break from being “you,” and simply go do something enjoyable. Take a run, ride a bike, eat an ice cream cone, watch a funny movie, bake cookies, call an old friend, do something romantic with a significant other. I promise you, your problems can wait an hour. Lastly, when you do bounce back, pay it forward and use that newfound wisdom to help someone else.

their sessions, each fifthgrader picked one skill to practice, master and perform: Chinese yo-yo, devil sticks, juggling, plate spinning and stilt walking. They also learned clown routines by dressing in costume and writing comedic skits. The circus arts program was supported by the PTA’s Arts in Education committee. Students worked with experience performers from O Town Circus Academy, who gave personalized instruction. “They make sure every child is successful at one of these skills,” Mr. Catalanotto said, adding that it was thrilling to watch them progress throughout the week and perform complicated routines. He added that the weeklong program shows students that with hard work and determination, they can achieve anything.

Fire Prevention Day Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined members of the North Massapequa Fire Department who recently held their Annual Fire Prevention Day and Open House. The event included many family-fun activities, demonstrations and informative literature designed to help residents
practice fire safety at home. Among the attendees were Plainedge Cub Scout Pack 436, which presented a signed t-shirt from all of the scouts in support of the fire department and all that it does to protect the community during times of emergency. Among those on hand were 3rd Assistant Chief
Thomas M. Licata, Chief of Department Joseph M. Pesale Jr., 2nd Assistant Chief Mark J. Frascella and Ex-Captain Gary Pysock. Supervisor Saladino thanked the Department Members for their efforts in coordinating the event and for their commitment and service to the community.

Swimmers Dive Into Fundraiser The Massapequa High School girls varsity swim team hosted its annual Swim for a Cure meet on September 28th, at Syosset, for Pediatric Cancer Month. The Lady Chiefs collected items such as coloring books,
crayons and small toys to be donated to the pediatric cancer unit at Cohens Children’s Medical Center. They also held a 50/50 raffle for breast cancer awareness, which will be go toward the Massapequa School District’s Dig Pink
initiative. The swimmers raised more than $400 and a table full of items during their Swim for a Cure endeavor with the help of their opponent and friends from Garden City Swim and Dive team.
WORN OUT WORDS - Second-graders are beefing up their vocabulary at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students in Mary Upton’s class created the “Worn Wall” to help improve their writing throughout the year. The students identified more than 20 commonly used — or worn out — words, then used dictionaries and thesauruses to find at least three more complex alternatives. ABOUT ME - Kindergartners at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District completed several “About Me” projects to begin the school year. Children made self-portraits and included information such as their names, ages, favorite books, favorite colors and interests. They also worked with fifth-grade buddies to do writing projects on Chromebooks, responding to the prompts, “I am excited for this year because…” and “What I love most about my new classroom.” The projects allowed the new classmates to get to know each other better. “How To” Parent Program Parenting, like any other skill, is something we learn, and learning “on the job” can be frustrating. As parents, we become confused when, after constant repetition of the same theme, children still do not respond. YES Community Counseling Center and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition will host the Active Parenting NOW program, for parents of children in grades K-6, at the Massapequa Public Library, Bar Harbour Building, from 7:15pm – 8:45pm, for six consecutive
Tuesdays beginning November 13th through December 18th. The cost of the program is $40 per family for the entire series, including a workbook. The reduced fee is made possible thanks to the support of Senator John Brooks. Active Parenting NOW is designed to equip parents with new skills and enhance the ones they already have, in order to face the challenges of parenting. The video-based parent education series will address how parents can improve communication
with their children; teach responsibility and other important values; handle problems as they arise; defuse power struggles; and cope with difficult topics such as drugs, bullying and sex. The program also advises parents on how to stimulate independence as children grow older and encourage kids to be their best. Flood-prone communities on Long Island will undergo infrastructure projects and storm preparation as they continue to recover from the years-long aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene, and Tropical Storm Lee. The Town of Oyster Bay, which includes parts of the 9th Assembly District in Massapequa, Massapequa Park, and South Farmingdale, is receiving $2.1 million for permanent generators at emergency and community facilities. During the selection process, members of the Massapequa Committee
voiced their concerns over power outages at community centers, emergency stations, and of course homes and businesses throughout the area. “It’s not if, but when the next storm hits the South Shore of Long Island,” Assemblywoman Christine Pellegrino (D-Oyster Bay/ Babylon/Islip) said. “The State has to do everything in our power to protect our homeowners and small businesses, who have already suffered enough in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. The power outages were
just as devastating as the storm itself. This grant of $2.1 million from GOSR’s NY Rising Community Reconstruction Program will ensure that emergency shelters and fire stations in the Town of Oyster Bay, including Massapequa and Massapequa Park, have reliable power.” The funding is part of more than $41.1 million in NY Rising Community Reconstruction projects that will begin this fall across Long Island and New York State.
