Time Of The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And just like that, the holiday season is upon us. It seems like just last week we were soaking up the last few rays of sun at the beach, our toes in the sand, the waves crashing ashore… and now we’re busy digging out boots and scarves and stocking up on all things pumpkin spice. Such is the circle of life, the cycle of seasons and the wonder of Mother Nature. Speaking of, “sources” claim this winter will be colder than normal, with
record snowfall yet again. Shocking. Really, do we need to start obsessing about the first flake from now? It is what it is; it will be what it will be – the end. Deal with it. Or don’t, and hibernate until March. The mass hysteria is beyond maddening, especially since most meteorologists can’t seem to predict the next day’s forecast, let alone an entire season’s worth. Just sayin’. In the meantime, can we all just enjoy the cool, crisp air of Autumn? Play in the leaves, pick pumpkins and apples, check out a haunted
house or corn maze, create a unique Halloween costume, start planning your Thanksgiving menu ... Save the shovels for another day. For now, anyway. And as for those Christmas gift lists ... relax. There’s something about shopping for the holidays during the actual season, don’t you think? Those who are already finished are missing out on the true spirit in their rush to cross tasks off the to-do list. It’s not a race. It’s about putting some thought into it and enjoying the experience.

FIRE PREVENTION MONTH - Cub Scout Pack 776’s Tiger Den 8 visited the Front Street Firehouse on October 16th to fulfill their requirement to visit a fire station. The Cub Scouts learned about fire prevention and safety. In addition, the Scouts received a station tour that included the fire trucks, ambulances and firefighter’s gear. Everyone had a great time and left with a greater understanding of how firefighters help the community. Thank you to the brave firefighters who protect our village!

Massapequa Takes Action As headlines on heroin addiction splash across the media - heightening parents’ fears and concerns on how to protect their children there’s one centralized place where parents can turn for information and resources on how to keep their children safe. Massapequa Takes Action (MTA) is a group that connects school, parents and community to help parents like you get the education you need to better guide children away from risky behaviors. Made up of PTA members, YES Community Counseling Center members and school professionals, the group also educates students about the dangers of risky behaviors through age-appropriate programs and empowers students with strong anti-drug activities and clubs that promote prosocial behaviors. “Research tells us over and over again that the most effective way to respond to drug use and abuse is to develop a very comprehensive
prevention approach,” said Jamie Bogenshutz, executive director of YES Community Counseling Center, the state’s licensed outpatient drug treatment provider for the community. “That has been the foundation upon which MTA was created. Programs are developed and implemented that allow for parent, school and community partnerships. When all three are working together, we reduce the risks for our children and strengthen our community.” M TA - i m p l e m e n t e d programs take place at every level in the district. At the elementary level, initiatives such as “Second Step” and “Too Good for
Drugs,” which focus on making good choices, are now being expanded into other elementary grade levels to reinforce the healthy lifestyle message. MTA also initiated the idea of having a social worker travel between the six elementary schools during the Summer Recreation program to provide counseling and crisis intervention to students. One valuable and informative program for parents of children in grades 7-12 is a sixweek Active Parenting Program that begins on November 6 from 11a.m.12 p.m. at Berner Middle School. Teachers Awarded Massapequa educators Janice Kincaid and William Anderson were honored before 325 of their colleagues during the 97th Annual Conference of the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers (NYSAFLT). Kincaid, a veteran Spanish teacher at Alfred G. Berner Middle School and the first world language teacher on Long Island to receive National Board Certification, was honored with the Ruth E. Wasley Distinguished Teacher Award, in recognition of her innovative and creative teaching methods. Named after a former secretary of NYSAFLT and a professor and teacher/trainer of foreign language methodology at SUNY Albany, the award pays tribute to those who emulate her innovative and creative style and her legacy as an outstanding role model for students. While she currently teaches Spanish to both seventh and eighth graders, Kincaid has also taught French and English as a Second Language (ESL) throughout her 33-year career, 14 of which have been in the Massapequa School District. What makes her most proud as a language teacher, she said, is when her students, both past and present, tell her about the different ways they use Spanish in their personal lives. “They are both proud and excited to share their experiences with me,” she said. “Their use of Spanish outside the classroom shows me that their second
language has become a meaningful and useful part of their lives.” In addition to being National Board certified, Kincaid participates in Harvard University’s Project Zero program, which assists educators in creating innovative learning environments that promote deep learning and understanding. She also immersed herself in researching the success of Teaching Proficiency through Reading

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that the Town is beginning to accept nomination forms for the 17th Annual Women of Distinction awards program. “Each year, the Town has the privilege of honoring designated ‘Women of Distinction’ in each of eight categories,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Winners will be recognized at a special ceremony early next year.” The Supervisor noted that anybody who would like to submit a candidate for the “Women of Distinction” need only fill out a nominating form and submit to the Town. Nominating forms have been distributed to libraries throughout the Town. They can also be found at Town Hall or can be downloaded from the Town’s website, www. oysterbaytown.com. “Anybody is welcome to submit an application, including those who have done so in the past and whose candidate was not
selected,” Supervisor Venditto said. Women who either live or work in the Town of Oyster Bay may be nominated in the following categories: 1) Arts: Woman who has contributed to the cultural life of the community through theatre, dance, music, art or literature. 2) B u s i n e s s : Professional woman in a position as owner, CEO or high-level manager of a business or industry. 3) Community and Civic Affairs: A leader, supervisor, administrator, manager or member who has made a contribution to the community. 4) E d u c a t i o n : A woman educator, administrator or director of a public or private institution of learning who has been outstanding in the field. 5) G o v e r n m e n t : Woman who has made an outstanding contribution to the community through her work in or with local government.
6) Health Services: Individual who has made an outstanding contribution in the health services field. 7) Humanitarian: An outstanding woman who has made a contribution to the community. This individual may or may not be affiliated with a commercial, professional or non-profit agency or group. 8) Volunteer: A woman who has made an outstanding contribution in serving the needs of others. “Now, in its 17th year, the Women of Distinction program continues to be a strong tradition and a successful tribute to the outstanding accomplishments of women throughout the Town of Oyster Bay,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Each woman honored will stand as a role model for young women throughout the Town. Technology Summit More than 700 educators and vendors came together at the 2014 Long Island Technology and Education Summit to learn about the best and most innovative ideas in education technology today. The summit was made possible by Nassau BOCES, Western Suffolk BOCES and Eastern Suffolk BOCES, in partnership with lead sponsor Teq. This year’s summit had more than 30
workshops, in which attendees learned how to effectively use emerging technology to enhance the academic experience for students. Topics included how to “flip” a classroom, enhancing school security through technology, creating a TV studio on a shoestring budget, and using Google apps. During two poster sessions, teachers from local school districts demonstrated web tools,
programming, iMovie for English language learners, and ebooks, just to name a few topics. The first keynote speaker, Dr. Chris Dede, the Timothy E. Wirth Professor in Learning Technologies at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, spoke about “the global knowledgebased economy” and “how we need personalized learning with a skilled person at the heart of it.”
Dr. Dede also discussed a new curriculum research project, EcoMuve, that is expanding the limits of the classroom through the use of 1:1 mobile devices to explore and learn. He went on to say that success in work depends on a person’s interpersonal skills. Afternoon keynote speaker Bill Daggett, Founder and Chairman of the International Center for Leadership in Education, offered insights
into making students college and career ready. He explained that data mining and artificial intelligence will become more sophisticated as people’s habits and experiences are monitored by computers. Two Long Island educators, Christopher J. Pellettieri, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction of the Rockville Centre UFSD, and Alison
Chiquitucto, kindergarten teacher from South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon UFSD, were awarded the 2014 Fred Podolski Leadership and Innovation in Technology Award. The award recognizes excellent work in successfully implementing new technology and strategies in classrooms to help improve student performance.

Community Counseling Center. “Unfortunately, attendance for this highly informative event was low.” Over the years, other efforts to educate parents through programs such as “Parent University” and “Risky Business,” were eventually cancelled due to low enrollment. To help boost community involvement, MTA is taking another form of action by challenging
parents to participate in at least one MTAsponsored program throughout the 2014-15 school year. “We cannot stress enough the importance of the whole community taking ownership of the problems facing our youth today and to share in the responsibility of equipping them with the tools they need to lead healthy, drugfree lives,” said Diane
Marascia, social worker at Massapequa High School and MTA committee member. “Heroin may be in the headlines, but the top substance abuse issues among teens are still marijuana and alcohol. These are the kids that are filling the re-hab facilities. People do not start abusing with heroin.” It’s also important to note that “perceived risk” is a strong indicator
of their children’s experimentation with drugs,” Marascia added. “If marijuana or alcohol is perceived to be less harmful, then the chances are higher that your child will engage in those drugs,” she said. “The best way for us to be successful is through community involvement, heightened awareness and educating parents about the dangers to minimize risk. If parents
