Dedication for Detective

Eastplain Elementary School in the Plainedge School District hosted a dedication ceremony for a sitting area and garden in honor of former graduate and NYPD Det. Brian Moore, as well as for those who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001. The area featured three blue benches surrounding

a flower bed and a Callery Pear Tree, which was grown from the only surviving tree near the original Ground Zero site in New York City. Students and staff wore blue to honor Det. Moore, and representatives from the Moore Family, as well as the 105th Precinct and members of the Plainedge

Long Island’s largest food drive event, the 7th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank, will take place on Wednesday, November 18th, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. Student Spotlight THE LITTLE THINGS SUBMITTED BY: SOFIA PAPASTAVROU, AGE 16, HHH HIGH SCHOOL WEST Currently, Cancer is responsible for 20,000 deaths a day. 20,000 lives lost to this illness. First off, I want to apologize for the morbidity already displayed one sentence into this essay. If you’re looking to read about average summer vacation stories, or the day someone won their first trophy, I would advise you to stop reading. I don’t write this to receive sob stories from countless people, or even gain sympathetic condolences. I just want to put life into perspective. I want to inform you readers of the true and raw meaning of life, and what many people have forgotten over the years while in the midst of everyday life. The pursuit of happiness is defined as a fundamental right mentioned in the Declaration of Independence to freely pursue joy and live life in a way that makes you happy. I think many people

have forgotten this idea, and it saddens me to feel the need to write this, informing people on how to truly live. I lost a dear friend of mine recently. She was a family friend, but I definitely considered her family - like an aunt. She was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago, and it only took a few months for the cancer to completely demolish her body. It’s not fair how she died so suddenly and irrationally. Life works mysteriously like that. I can’t quite put into words the feelings I encountered the day she died. But that’s a whole other story. One regret I have whilst she was still alive was not laughing and smiling a little bit more when I was still in her presence. I’m a glass half full type of person. I like to see things in positive perspectives. Life is way too short to be anything but happy.

In my eyes, if you have a roof over your head and food on the table, you’re lucky. The countless complaints that our society has adapted to consider “normal” is absurd… Now, I’m not going to lie and say I’ve never complained before. Hell, I probably complain a little too much. But luckily, I have the decency to step back and view the bigger picture in terms of the pursuit of happiness and pure joy and all of that cheerful nonsense. Live a little. Don’t let the little things bring you down. Be grateful for family and love and joy and laughter and all that good stuff that doesn’t cost a penny. Happiness is a free commodity. Only God knows when your life is coming to an end, so take advantage of every day. Say your “I love you’s” and give your biggest hugs and don’t regret a thing. Life is way too short - I can’t stress this enough.

Cyber Challenge Lockhart Elementary School students sharpened their math, literacy and science skills when they competed in a three-day online challenge known as the “World Education Games.” The competition pits students against millions from around the globe as they try their best to correctly answer questions in the three subject areas. Students were focused as they worked closer to breaking a world record,

the ultimate goal of the competition. The free contest began with World Math Day and World Literacy Day, then added World Science Day in 2012. This year, instead of working on one subject each day, students were able to compete in all three subject areas throughout the duration of the challenge. “Our students love the competition,” said Principal Stephen Scarallo. “It motivates them to

practice their skills in three key areas of instruction.” Each student was supplied with an individual username & password weeks before the competition so they could practice in school or at home, according to Lockhart’s computer liaison Donna Meyer, who coordinates the event for the school. “The students had fun and developed their skills at the same time,” she said.

Chromebook Connection Unqua Elementary School fourth graders were charged up to learn the proper use of Chromebooks to enhance instruction in the classroom. The Chromebook device runs the Chrome web browser, and is used to easily access the web and all its resources. Students were introduced to Google docs, created a grade-level folder to organize their work and typed an acrostic

student. Each elementary school is equipped with a Chromebooks cart, which has about 30 of the mobile devices for teachers to reserve and use in their classes. Chromebooks are being used every day by students in seventh through ninth grade as a primary instructional tool, an effort that will be expanded to all secondary grades next year.

International Dot Day

When author Peter H. Reynolds released the book, “The Dot,” in 2013, it soon became a worldwide sensation. This year, McKenna Elementary School joined millions of people around the globe in celebrating International Dot Day, which challenges participants to express their creativity. The book is about a

student who feels she isn’t an artist. Her teacher says, “Just make a mark and see where it takes you.” The students jabs the pencil onto paper and makes a dot. “There,” her teacher says. “This is the beginning.” During the month of September, McKenna students were encouraged to “just make a mark” to

see where it took them. Each student helped create a beautiful painted dot, which became part of a display along the halls of the building. In honor of encouraging others to take risks and start one step at a time, students and faculty also wore an article of clothing with dots on it.

Finned Wit & Wisdom By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Here I come to save the day, yet again, with my witty observations on life from within the confines of my bowl. The Human, it seems, is busy getting herself ready for a wedding – one, I might add, that I was not invited to. And here I had my bowtie and top hat all picked out for the occasion. How rude. I suppose this means my dinner will be late too. What does a fish have to do to maintain a steady feeding schedule? Sometimes it’s twice a day, sometimes once… four flakes, five… sometimes only a couple when I knock the rest down to the gravel with my fins, never to be seen again. Speaking of which, these

late-night feedings have to stop. Back and forth, I swim my laps, anxiously waiting for my Human to arrive. Eventually, after days of starvation {10 hours or so} I give up hope, putting myself to bed with no supper. But wait, is that a light I see? I groggily press my nose against the glass, dimly making out the shadow of my Human, apologizing for getting home so late. I sleepily bounce from one branch of my plant to another, aimlessly chomping at imaginary flakes, before putting myself back to bed, thoroughly unsatisfied. I suppose I’m always hungry though. I have no concept of time, or quantity. As many times as I find flakes fluttering into my bowl, I will

greedily inhale them, barely pausing to chew in between. From my experience, you have to savor these feeding times, since you never know when the next one may come around. Sort of like the Mets and their quest for the World Series. I haven’t been around long, but I hear this is a pretty rare occurrence. Me, I tend to root for the Marlins. Us fish gotta stick together, after all. But, I suppose I’m a New Yorker, officially. Maybe my Human will buy me some blue and orange gravel so I can root, root, root for the home team…you know, on our trip to the pet store that I’ve been promised since August. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, signing off.

Expanding Technology With student achievement as the end goal, 17 districts from throughout Nassau County worked with Nassau BOCES on a variety of technology projects this summer. Collectively, these districts invested nearly $24 million in technology upgrades within the 10week summer period. This is the time when schools are mostly closed, allowing the agency the opportunity to accomplish such upgrades. These projects ranged from wireless connectivity and complete network refreshes to implementing new email systems. In addition, Nassau BOCES technicians readied more than 29,000

computers, laptops and mobile devices for students and administrators for their first day back. For the techs, solutions are always more important than the technology. “Our conversations with our districts always start with ‘What are you trying to accomplish?’” said Sandeep Dhillon, who oversees the Nassau BOCES technicians. “Then we talk to them about the best options to get those results. We’re not married to any specific brands or types of technology. We strive for the best outcomes using the most affordable methods to achieve them. In addition, our cooperative buying power saves districts

money and helps them meet their goals.” Sometimes these conversations lead to more comprehensive projects. One example is how Nassau BOCES handled a tech project for the Oyster Bay-East Norwich CSD. “They requested that we help them develop a fiveyear technology plan for the district,” said Dhillon. “Once we reviewed it with them, they realized that the best thing they could do to help students become college and career ready is to completely refresh their system.” Oyster Bay-East Norwich CSD updated its technology infrastructure, added wireless connectivity and replaced laptops and other

computers throughout the district. “They now have a system that can sustain them for up to 10 years,” said Dhillon. East Rockaway UFSD wanted help prepping its network for the district’s new 1-to-1 initiative, which will pair each sixth grade student with a laptop. After helping the district select the best device for its needs, each of the laptops had to be prepared for student use. They all needed software and filters so that students cannot access inappropriate websites. Improved collaboration was a key goal for many districts. To help with that, Nassau BOCES Technology Services recommended

switching to Microsoft Office 365’s free email product, which has many features that allow teachers and administrators to work together. Seven districts – East Meadow UFSD, East Rockaway UFSD, East Williston UFSD, Long Beach City SD, Malverne UFSD, North Merrick UFSD and Oyster BayEast Norwich CSD – were all migrated to this new system over the summer. To complete some of these projects within one budget year, many districts need to use financing. Nassau BOCES has taken a leading role in this arena as well; the agency’s Business Services Department ensures that its component districts obtain low rates.

“More and more districts are working with us because of the level of expertise that our technicians have and the economy of scale that we can provide,” said Anthony Carfora, Executive Director of Nassau BOCES Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Technology. During the school year, the technicians work with districts to maintain their systems and troubleshoot technology issues. These tech experts are supported by student workers from Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, a career and technical education high school program, and other high school and college programs.
