Chronic pain affects people all around the world, greatly impacting sufferers’ quality of life. According to the American Academy of Pain Medicine, recent reports have indicated more than 1.5 billion people worldwide experience chronic pain. Common complaints include lower back pain, headache, neck pain or neurogenic pain, which is pain resulting from damage to peripheral nerves.

Pain can impact people in many ways, as some people can tolerate discomfort better than others. Chronic pain may result in missed time at work, depression, anger and an inability to live a full life. According to a recent Institute of Medicine Report: Relieving Pain in America: A Blueprint for Transforming Prevention, Care, Education, and Research, pain is a significant public health problem that costs society at least $560 to

To cope with pain, many people rely on over-the-counter and prescription medications. This reliance on drugs has helped to fuel pain medication addictions that can lead to other drug abuse. The National Institute on Drug Abuse says research now suggests that abuse of opioid pain medications may actually open the door to heroin use. Some individuals report switching to heroin because it is cheaper and easier to obtain than prescription opioids. A safer and sometimes more effective method of pain relief than opioids, physical therapy can help a person get back on track and feel much better in the process. The American Physical Therapy Association says while surgery and prescription drugs can be the best course of treatment for certain diagnoses, there is increasing evidence that conservative treatments like physical therapy can

be equally effective and cheaper treatment plans for many conditions. Physical therapy can be as effective as surgery for meniscal tears and knee osteoarthritis, rotator cuff tears and spinal stenosis, among other conditions.

road. Therapy may target specific areas of pain. Because of their expertise, therapists may be able to assess posture, gait and other attributes that may be contributing to injury and make suggestions to reduce recurrence.

When a patient is prescribed physical therapy, a therapist will develop a treatment plan that addresses the specific needs of the patient. This is essentially a collaboration between patient and physical therapist. Therapists are experts in improving mobility and motion and have studied extensively to that end. Because weakness or stiffness may be contributing to pain, therapists try to address the source of the pain and relieve the pain itself.

In addition to the therapies mentioned, a combination of massage and other work may be included in a physical therapy plan. This may include TENS and ultrasound. According to WebMD, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, or TENS, uses a device to send a low-voltage electric current to the skin over the area where you have pain. Ultrasound sends sound waves to the places you have pain. Both of these options may help to block pain messages to the brain and offer relief.

Physical therapy may include exercises that stretch the body and improve flexibility. Strengthening exercises will help work on core muscles as well as other parts of the body to prevent injury down the

Improve Indoor Air Quality in Advance of Winter Upon the arrival of winter, people in regions where winter is marked by cold weather tend to spend significantly more time indoors. Because windows tend to be closed during winter, indoor air quality can suffer, making conditions inside a home less than desirable. According to the American Lung Association, poor air circulation in a home can promote the spread of bacteria and viruses. Once such bacteria or viruses are inhaled, coughs, colds and flu can spread. In addition, asthma and allergy sufferers may experience worsening symptoms thanks to the presence of endotoxins, which are substances that come from the

broken-down cells of dead bacteria. Because many people spend significantly more time indoors during winter than other times of the year, it’s essential that they take measures to improve indoor air quality in the months ahead. Cut back on chemicals. It’s ideal to avoid heavy chemical usage inside a home throughout the year, but it’s especially important to do so during winter. Solvent-based cleaners or cleaning products with strong fragrances can negatively affect indoor air quality and potentially trigger allergic reactions. In lieu of chemicallyenhanced cleaning products, use natural products that get the job

done without sacrificing indoor air quality. Stop smoking indoors. Tobacco smoke can affect smokers and nonsmokers alike. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that secondhand smoke causes numerous health problems in infants and children. Those include more frequent and severe asthma attacks and respiratory infections. In addition, reports from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services have linked secondhand smoke to an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome. Adults exposed to secondhand smoke are at greater risk for coronary heart disease, stroke and lung

cancer. Tobacco smoke contains thousands of pollutants that can greatly diminish indoor air quality, so make sure smokers limit their smoking to outside the home throughout the year, but especially during winter. Take off your shoes when entering the home. Snowy conditions often require a home’s inhabitants and guests to remove their footwear upon entering a home, but it helps to remove footwear in a mudroom or just inside the front door when entering a home even when it’s not snowing. Shoes can pick up dirt, dust and a host of other particles during winter, and if tracked inside, those unwanted guests can negatively affect indoor air quality.

Routinely inspect bathrooms for mold. During winter, mold can grow in rooms that are exposed to moisture but not properly ventilated. In many homes, that’s the bathroom. Even if a bathroom has a ventilation fan, routinely inspect the ceiling and shower for mold growth. Exposure to mold can cause a host of negative side effects, including nasal and sinus congestion and sore throat. Mold also can exacerbate asthma symptoms. Improving and maintaining indoor air quality in winter can help a home’s inhabitants stay healthy during the colder months.

Each of the elementary schools in the Plainedge School District were recently visited by the Dr. Recess Assembly and Playground Games Program. This new and exciting program is designed to help students learn, grow, develop and live healthy lives through play. Dr. Recess hosted an introductory assembly for all students, where he

taught them the basics to new games such as Hoop Ball, Guard the Cookie Jar and Knockdown. All of the games teach social/emotional skills, thinking skills and motor schools to K-5 students. Following the introductory assembly, Dr. Recess joined students outside to assist them in executing the new game strategies during their recess periods.

This morning, I was hoping to see the sunrise. Not because I have never had the privilege of experiencing one, but because I thought it would be a fitting way to mark what would have been my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, an occasion we, as a family, are forced to bittersweetly celebrate in his absence. Somehow, I thought the golden rays welcoming a brand new day might make the sadness simply melt away. Unfortunately, when I awoke, it was not to the promising haze of dawn, but to an overcast sky brimming with rain clouds, seemingly ready to shower the land at any given moment. I suppose that was fitting in its own way. Realistically, the prospect

of “celebrating” any occasion following the passing of someone special is a fairly impossible task. Absent is the guest of honor, replaced by memories of days gone by and happier times. They say these things grow easier with time, but I’m not sure that is truly the case. Perhaps we just learn to adapt and deal with them differently... but the pain remains all the same. First holidays, especially, seem to take the biggest emotional toll on those loved ones left behind, as they attempt to pick up the pieces and carry on as usual. The problem is, there is no “norm,” so to speak. Traditions seem empty, and those things that once brought us joy are tinged with melancholy. Life goes on, of course, and happiness is found in

other outlets as new customs are established and flourish over time. The memories we treasure become the backbone, the foundation, of our existence, as we build upon them and incorporate new generations and settings. It can be a painful process, to be sure, but those memories, and the prospect of making new ones, provide the motivation to forge ahead. And so, on this, my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, I remember the loving man at the center of so many of my happiest memories. I find solace in knowing that he is always with me, in one form or another, along with all of my loved ones who have passed on through the years. And I take comfort in the fact that so many special people have touched my life.

Aspiring Artists Ninth-graders at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus channeled renowned artists like Claude Monet, Edgar Degas and Mary Cassatt as they created drawings using color layering. Students in Beth Adler’s Studio Art class turned photographs of landscapes and objects into drawings using graphite and colored pencils. The young artists

either used their own photos, or ones they found online. After making their sketch, they then used color layering to complete their drawings. As part of the assignment, students had to make their drawings look different than the pictures, and Ms. Adler encouraged them to use their imaginations as they made their choices with color. The project

merged two different art styles as students created contemporary drawings using impressionistic techniques. Studio Art is the foundation course for advanced art classes offered at the high school’s main campus. Ames students can also take Studio Art 2, which focuses on digital media.

Go Gold Donation Athletes at Massapequa High School are always in the giving spirit. For Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, students on the fall sports teams collected various items for the Sunrise Association, which offers free programs for children with cancer. Massapequa’s Go Gold fundraiser was started last year by student Emily Taylor, now a junior. She came up with the idea to honor a younger cousin, who is a survivor of childhood cancer. Led by varsity assistant football

coach Brian Rath, the fall sports teams joined the effort and each team collected items for Sunrise, including video games and gaming systems, toys, and arts and crafts supplies. Teams also collected monetary donations at select Go Gold home games this fall, where the athletes raised awareness by wearing gold or yellow accessories such as socks or shoe laces. “It’s amazing to see how everybody worked together for a such a good cause,” Emily said.

Sunrise Association offers day camps for children with cancer and their siblings. On October 13th, the donations were presented to the organization’s vice president, Aileen Hoffman, who said the items would be used to support children who attend the summer camp. Next June, Massapequa athletes will participate in the Sunrise Association’s walk at its Wheatley Heights camp.

Fall Cultural Program

More than 60 teachers in the Massapequa School District have received training in the Project Zero Classroom initiative over the past six summers, which has created a new level of student participation in all grade levels. Teachers are sent for this weeklong training at Harvard University as a joint venture between the district and the Massapequa Community Fund. Diana Haanraadts, the assistant to the superintendent for instructional services and general administration, said the goal is to create more student engagement in the classrooms. Teachers are creating a seminar style atmosphere by facilitating rich and meaningful discussions that allow students to share their thoughts and learn from one another. During the training, teachers spent five full days in intense classes.

“It’s very eye-opening and it’s very challenging,” Ms. Haanraadts said. “It makes you think differently about the way you’re teaching and the way kids are learning.” Berner Middle School seventh-grade English teacher Louisa Vecchione attended the training twice and has since implemented Chalk Talk posters in her classrooms. On a large piece of paper, students each have to respond to a quote from a book, a concept or an image. By taking the pressure off of students in having to answer in front of the entire class, they are more willing to share their thoughts and often expand on each other’s ideas. Megan Pavlick, a fifthgrade teacher at Fairfield Elementary School, has her students do weekly reflective journaling. They create illustrated metaphors based on a concept they learned

After a classroom brainstorming session, students make their metaphors as classical music plays in the background, then share and discuss their finished pieces. “Reflective journaling provides opportunities for ongoing assessment for the teacher and self-assessment for my students,” Ms. Pavlick said. “These artists, thinkers, scholars, readers and writers all value each other’s thinking. What else could a teacher ask for? It’s my favorite time of our week together.” Many of the teachers who have attended the training continue to meet in groups to discuss their implementation of Project Zero. Others have provided workshops for Massapequa teachers and some, like Ms. Vecchione, have presented at regional and state conferences.

To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Massapequa High School’s fall athletic teams have each dedicated one home game to the cause. The girls’ volleyball team held its 10th annual Dig Pink fundraiser on October 14th, with players from both the varsity and junior varsity teams donning pink uniforms and accessories. The event began with the junior varsity

game. It followed with performances by the cheerleaders and Chiefettes kickline team and a Stand Up ceremony, in which players and people in the crowd held up signs with the name of someone they knew affected by breast cancer.
