Massapequa High School has received one of the most prestigious distinctions in education, as it has been named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the United States Department of Education. The announcement was made on September 28th and Massapequa was one of 342 schools in the nation to receive the honor. It was nominated last year and was chosen as an Exemplary High Performing School following an extensive application and review process. “The honor both validated the positive, empowering work our students and educators demonstrate each day,” said Principal Patrick DiClemente. “We appreciate the acknowledgement of the positive, safe, dynamic culture of our school, our students’ outstanding academic performance and graduation rate, our social awareness and servicelearning efforts, the diligent professional work of all of our staff, and the supportive contributions and investment of our families and the entire community.” Massapequa High School, with an enrollment of approximately 1,700 students in 10th through 12th grades, has an extensive academic program in which students have opportunities to challenge themselves with higher-level coursework and explore their passions through a vast array of electives. Slimy Science Study Fifth-graders took part in a scientific convention at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, in which they studied a creation based upon a popular children’s book. Magnet/STEAM teacher Joanne Markowski made her own Oobleck, a green

slime inspired by the Dr. Seuss book “Bartholomew and the Oobleck.” Students were invited in to observe the slime and feel the gooey substance, which had the properties of both a solid and a liquid. The students formed groups and debated to determine if the Oobleck

was a solid, a liquid, both or neither. They had to use evidence from their observations to support their claims. Ms. Markowski said that by simulating a scientific convention, students learned how laws in science are made.

Setting Sail APPLE PATTERNING - Children learn best through play and this works very well when you teach a concept such as patterns. Apple patterning is a math concept which helps children learn sequencing and improves math skills. Ms. Auty’s pre-k class at Grace Early Childhood Center is enjoying this important lesson. Great job in encouraging stu-dents to think critically through play.

Students in the oceanography course at Massapequa High School recently took a trip to the School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at Stony Brook Southampton. They got to do handson water monitoring and sampling, using equipment to test for dissolved oxygen,

salinity, temperature, bottom sediment and light penetration. Aboard a boat which sailed out into the bay, the young oceanographers participated in teambuilding activity as they pulled in the trawl and observed the crabs they caught and tagged as part

Last week, I was saddened to learn of the passing of a most cherished teacher, mentor and friend, Mr. Elsesser - “Harry” as he signed the yearly Christmas cards we exchanged. They say that some people leave footprints on your heart… this was most certainly true of the man who took me under his wing way back in 4th grade, and helped me to soar to new heights I never thought possible. Up to that point, I had been a fairly good student, conscientious enough in the academic department, but lacking a bit of the “plays well with others” skills that tend to come with time. Seeing this unfulfilled potential, Mr. Elsesser made it his mission to ensure that I would flourish under his watchful eye.

His class was one of those that you find yourself reflecting upon from time to time with a smile, recalling anecdotes and amusing instances, such as when he would entertain us with stories of his travels - to Africa, the Galapagos Islands, Japan, and beyond. Occasionally, there would be touches of Swahili thrown into the vocabulary lesson for good measure. As I entered fifth grade a better all-around student and person, Mr. E. decided to retire after 30 years of teaching in the Lindenhurst school district. Saddened to see him go, and promising to keep in touch, my mother - who had also been a student in the district when Mr. Elsesser began his tenure there started a yearly correspondence, exchanging Christmas cards and keeping each other updated on the happenings in our respective lives. Years later, I took over this tradition and began sending my own correspondence, filling Mr.

E. in on the comings and goings of college and, eventually, my blossoming career. How proud he was to learn that I was utilizing my love of writing and had become a weekly columnist for my old hometown paper. Often, he would call my desk at the office, greeting me with, Is this Miss Jamie Lynn Ryan, the reporter?? We would chat about how work was going, the family, had I seen any of my old classmates lately, what I had for lunch… and always, without fail, as we were getting ready to hang up, he would say, Send hugs and kisses to your parents, and of course to you too. What a wonderful man, and what a treasured friendship, one sustained for over a quarter of a century. How lucky I was that our paths crossed in life, and how blessed I am to have so many fond memories to reflect upon, and remember with a smile. May you rest in peace, Mr. E… Love and kisses, Jamie

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino is pleased to announce an exciting new renovation and beautification project slated for Beekman Beach in Oyster Bay, which will be completely financed and facilitated through the generous support of the Oyster Bay Lions Club. “This is a perfect example of local government and the community working cooperatively to accomplish something meaningful and positive for the community,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Oyster Bay Lions Club has a long and distinguished legacy of contributing to our community and this

beautification project is another example of the incredible impact they have on our Town to make it a better place.” The Oyster Bay Lions Club will renovate an existing overlook at the northern portion of Beekman Beach, which is situated on the western waterfront, just west of the Town’s Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, Beach and Marina. The project will include new benches, a new walkway and patio area, landscaping and a newly installed flag pole. The Lions Club, through their own fundraising initiatives, will fully finance the undertaking

and be responsible for all aspects of construction. The Lions Club will work with the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Public Works to ensure that the project meets design and construction criteria. “Beekman Beach is an area that has long been appreciated by our residents for its serenity and incredibly scenic views of Oyster Bay Harbor,” Supervisor Saladino added. “This renovation project will further enhance this already beautiful park and provide amenities that will allow our residents to even more fully appreciate all that it has to offer.”

Enjoying the Outdoors Fifth-graders in Maggie Rago’s class at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District know how to stay fit. They won additional time at recess by having the highest participation during Walk to School Day. The school, in conjunction with the PTA’s Health and Wellness Council, sponsored the event on October 4th, encouraging students to

walk or ride their bicycles to school that morning. It was part of a nationwide initiative organized by the National Center for Safe Routes to School. “It’s good to walk to school because it’s great exercise and you can get fresh air,” said fifth-grader Brendan Ciarlo. To encourage students to participate, the event featured a nature scavenger hunt, in which

they had to find common items in the neighborhood such as birds, flowers, two similar rocks and Y-shaped twigs. Fifth-grade Nicholas Augello said he was able to find all 20 items on the list. As their reward, Ms. Rago’s students had an additional 15 minutes of recess on October 11th, with the back field all to themselves. Children played soccer and enjoyed the playground equipment.

Commended Congrats across the nation were recognized for their exceptional academic promise. They placed among the top scorers of the more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2018 competition by taking

the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Connor was presented with a Letter of Commendation by Principal Patrick DiClemente.
