very student at Schwarting Elementary School in the Plainedge School District took part in an Arts In Education project to design a school mural. The mural was outlined by the PTA, in conjunction with collaborators from the company The Art Spot, and the students then filled it with tile. The mosaic mural will feature the ‘lil devil’ mascot, along with the school slogan. A great job was done by all!

This year’s Over 50 Fair had a successful run on September 28th at the Melville Marriott. Fair Director Barbara Kaplan said she has received many positive comments from both attendees and exhibitors. The Nassau County Film Office has nonpaying, part-time internships and volunteer positions available in our Mineola office. The Nassau County Film Office helps production companies find locations and services when they are filming in the Nassau County area. They work with major studio films, independent films, commercials, industrial videos and fashion photography. They work very closely with the Long Island Film/TV Foundation on producing the Filmmakers Connection Meetings and the Long Island International Film Expo (LIIFE). Some of the past interns have gone on to become Promotions Managers of local radio stations, lawyers at the State Attorney’s Office, Location Scouts, Placement Managers in the entertainment field, and other varied positions in the film and commercial industries. You must be good on

the phone, computer literate, dependable and detail oriented. The Nassau County Film Office is open from Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. They ask that you work two to three days within those days/hours. A successful internship can earn you a highly respected letter of recommendation, college credits, contacts in the film industry and possible job referrals. If you are interested in a career in the film/tv/commercial industries, make yourself a more viable job candidate by learning what goes into a film shoot from the ground level up. Who says you have to travel into Manhattan for a fun-filled evening of delicious food and drink? YES Community Counseling Center hosted its 7th Annual A Taste Of The Town, featuring many of the south shore’s finest culinary establishments. All proceeds for the event benefited YES, a nonprofit community based organization providing services to children and families in the community. The Knights of Columbus, Lady of the Island Council, together with the Village of Massapequa Park, will sponsor the annual Halloween Costume Parade on Sunday, October 26th, in Brady Park. Registration for the parade will begin at 12 p.m. and the parade and judging will kick off at 1 p.m. Costumes will be judged on creativity, originality and execution. I recently adopted two pet goldfish. And by adopted, I mean spent $5 on 30 chances to win one at a carnival, and spent 17¢ on the other at a local pet store. Add to that the expense of a fishbowl, pretty neon-colored gravel, a fun plant for the two of them to dart behind whenever I’m within a 5 mile radius, the all-important goldfish food which they don’t appear to even notice ﬂoating overhead, and a scrubbing brush and net for the weekly cleaning process and maintenance. All that, with the hope that these two finned friends

will make it through the week, maybe even a month or two. My record so far is one whole year, upon which milestone my beta fish promptly croaked. I suppose the birthday celebration was too much for him. So far, as of this writing, five days and going strong. Not bad. Of course, I realize goldfish aren’t the most sociable of pets to have, but these two – whom I named Harvey and Harry – are beyond standoffish. I turn the light on, they swim away; I sprinkle a few food ﬂakes in their bowl, they’re nowhere to be found. I walk away, turn the light out and – viola – there they are, faces pressed against the glass.

I have visions of the conversation that must go on between them when I’m not in the room: When is the human coming back? Why does she bother us? Did you eat today? I wish we had more trees to hide behind. Yes, I know – it’s silly. But they are home alone together all day; there must be some form of socialization between them, no? At any rate, I can feel satisfied that I rescued two goldfish, one from the madness of the carnival setting, the other from the schools of fellow fish in the aquarium. Even if they do prefer to cram themselves into a corner by themselves.

GAMER GATE The malpractice of “journalists” on prominent gaming journalism websites such as Kotaku and RockPaperShotgun was first examined under a critical lens when an independent developer named Zoe Quinn was exposed. She had cheated on her boyfriend, now her ex-boyfriend, and he had written a blog about what had transpired, intriguingly titled: “The Zoe Post.” In this blog, Eron, Zoe’s ex, documented a list of reasons and events leading to the break up, which spurred reaction from the community when it was revealed that she was having intimate relationships with people who wrote articles for gaming news websites, namely, those who wrote positive reviews and articles for Zoe’s game, “Depression Quest,” a text-based adventure game which was not well-received by the community.

As the corruption began to come to light, leading to public outcry, it was quickly censored and oppressed all across the internet. As people became more enraged, due to the fact that their right to freedom of speech was being taken away by anonymous hands, members of the community invested in the industry who felt as though it was wrong to condone corruption, started digging. More tidbits of corruption were unearthed, exposing financial and intimate relationships between writers and their sources, the developers. However, this was not before journalists responded to the community’s irritation over the lack of ethics among these journalists. These journalists defended Zoe, taking cover behind unrelated societal issues, such as misogyny and hostility towards feminists. Each week, the

journalists became more smug, making more outlandish claims while laying back, believing that everyone was powerless and that there would be no reprimand for the extremely unethical things they had done. These outlandish claims stated things such as, “The gaming industry is dying,” as well as a comparison of gamers to the terrorist organization, ISIS. These protests have gone on for weeks, indicating hope for the cause - and that cause is justice. Professional journalists know that the things they have carried out and the way they have handled public response is extremely wrong. These writers have betrayed our trust; but more importantly, their duty. People must know of the injustice that befalls the fifth estate so that it may be corrected. Awareness is crucial to fighting relentless corruption.

Approximately 1,500 walkers helped raise money at Jones Beach State Park last weekend during Long Island’s Sixth Annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Walk, hosted by the Brain Aneurysm Center of the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Cushing Neuroscience Institute (CNI), along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF).

The money will benefit North Shore-LIJ’s Brain Aneurysm Center and the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF), supporting essential research that may directly benefit those affected and help to reduce the incidence of ruptured aneurysms. Brain aneurysm survivors, their families and friends attended the fun-

filled event on September 27th. During the month of October, the Long Island Game Farm will only be open on weekends. The Game Farm will operate on the following dates: October 18th-19th and 25th-26th. In addition to seeing the animals, Game Farm visitors can also take part in a special event during the month of October: a “Meet The Pirate and Princess Party” and costume contest, which will take place on October 25th (rain date is October 26th). Visitors can explore nature trails that lead to places such as “Bambiland,” “The Nursery” and “Old McDonald’s Farmyard.” They can also pet, cuddle and — unlike most zoos — feed the baby animals such as pigs, chickens, ducks, rabbits and ponies. Wantagh’s Christ Lutheran Church, Seaford’s Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and another area church participated in a dedicated day of service celebrated by Lutheran churches nationwide and collected more than 7,000 items of food and $1,000 from generous shoppers at four local grocery stores, all to benefit The New LIFE Center Food Pantry in Uniondale. Congregation members from Christ Lutheran and Our Redeemer were joined by those from Massapequa’s St. David’s Lutheran Church in collecting food and money outside of four

local supermarkets. The churches, members of the Metropolitan New York Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, participated in the collection as part of “God’s work. Our Hands.” Sunday — a dedicated day of service honoring the tenets of the Lutheran Church. “Every day we work to love our neighbor and help make the community a better place,” said Pastor Martin R. Nale of Christ Lutheran Church and one of the organizers of the collection. “Through our hands we were able to do God’s work and it

was a blessing to have so many members of the community show their generosity and passion for others in need by donating food and money. Sometimes that’s all it takes to make a difference.” All of the collected food and money will go to The New LIFE Center at Uniondale’s Grace Lutheran Church. The New LIFE Center operates a food pantry that provides emergency food to individuals and families, and during the holidays, offers baskets of food for Easter, Thanksgiving and Lent.
