Far from the average breast cancer foundation, Pink Aid’s mission is to help local underserved women survive treatment on both a financial and emotional level. Its goals are made possible through fundraisers such as its forthcoming Second Annual Pink Chair Luncheon and Fashion Show, which pays special attention to “local breast cancer warriors.” This unique event, which last year raised more than $225,000 from its 300 attendees in support of several local community grants, is being held at Mitchells|Marshs in Huntington on Thursday, October 15th at 11:30 a.m. The heart and soul of the Pink Chair fundraiser is the “Celebration of Life/Warrior Fashion Show” featuring 17 brave Long Island women who have battled through treatment of the disease. In addition to taking to the stage in the latest Mitchells|Marshs fall fashions alongside their biggest supporters, these survivors share inspirational messages regarding their journeys. This year’s guest speaker is New York’s own Marisa Acocella Marchetto, a breast cancer survivor and awardwinning cartoonist and graphic novelist whose work has appeared inThe New Yorker; The New York Times; Glamour and O, The Oprah Magazine. She recently released the graphic novel Ann Tenna and her previous Cancer Vixen novel was named one of Time magazine’s top ten graphic memoirs and was a finalist for the National Cartoonists Society “Graphic Novel of the Year.” She is also the founder and chair of the Marisa Acocella Marchetto Foundation at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Dubin Breast Center at Mount

a ‘win-win’ situation,” said FASNY President Robert McConville. Under FASNY HELP, any active volunteer firefighter, in good standing, and who hasn’t already achieved a college degree is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement. The reimbursement is in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of academic courses that the HELP student-volunteer can pursue, either on a full-time or part-time basis. FASNY HELP also covers online courses taken through Empire State College. FASNY HELP funds can be utilized for tuition costs incurred in the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters. Eligible student-volunteers must

maintain acceptable levels of training and volunteer activity while attending school and fulfill a service requirement after they complete their course of study. They must attend a chartered NYS community college; Empire State College’s inclusion in the program has expanded students’ location options. Due to a variety of factors, many volunteer fire departments are experiencing the need to recruit and retain more members. Tuition reimbursement can be an effective incentive for people to volunteer in their local community. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has announced an application deadline extension to October 16th, 2015 for tuition reimbursement through their historic educational initiative, the Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York State. “The FASNY HELP program has benefitted hundreds of dedicated firefighters serving communities across the State. Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn to Skate” this winter by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park, according to Oyster Bay Town Councilman Michele M. Johnson. “Anyone interested in learning to skate or in sharpening their abilities will be happy to learn that the ice skating center offers skating classes for residents all throughout the year,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Registration for Series 2 (November 1st through December 19th) will begin on October 18th. Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for new members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level. There will also be an evaluation on week seven with a recommendation for the

next series. There will be no refunds or makeups and skate rental is not included in price. The Over 50 Fair once again had a successful run on September 27th at the Melville Marriott. The Fair had 90 exhibitors and 30 classes, some taught by local and national celebrities, covering a variety of disciplines, all designed to help those over age 50 live their lives to the fullest. Barbara Kaplan, the Over 50 Fair director. Chef Jonathan of Fox TV’s hit show MasterChef Season 6 and Chef AJ of Fox TV’s MasterChef Junior Season 3 did cooking demonstrations as well as “meet and greets.” Several beauty queens were in attendance, including the newly crowned Ms. New York Senior America 2015, CJ Marie. Edith Jason, age 80, one of the oldest yoga teachers on Long Island, taught a yoga class. Comedians Mark Brier and Howard Newman entertained at separate performances. In addition, there were a group psychic reading, reiki class, iPad tips, saving for retirement, travel, and health topics such as sleep apnea, cardiology, and podiatry. This event has been building a loyal following among the Boomer Generation during the six years of its existence due to its consistent presentation of a variety of classes and products they find appealing. The free opportunities this year include valet parking, waxing, and health screenings such as video otoscope and blood pressure screenings. Sheila Murphy of Babylon summed up the event. “Much needed info. Can’t wait for the next event. I will spread the world. Excellent event!” The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), a local non-profit that helps Long Island’s needy, raised over $400 and 117 pounds of food. The bane of every writer’s existence. That infinite white space stretching before you, silently mocking its would-be-author’s lack of inspiration. And yet, there is always that potential that the following few keystrokes just might be the beginning of the next great American novel. Or not. Perhaps another day, on another page… I have always been one of those writers who wakes up with a thought, the makings of an entire essay, in fact, and then helplessly allows it to fade into the

oblivion of that dreamlike state in which we often begin our day. And, just like that, it’s gone, a mere trace of a concept that could have been. If only I had the good sense to jot down these fleeting thoughts. Instead, I sit here blank, staring at aforementioned blank page, feeling a sort of camaraderie with it. What shall we accomplish today? Do I sense a metaphor here, a comparison to each brand new day we are afforded, that 24hour stretch of limitless possibilities for adventure and accomplishment? Too easy. And yet, clearly not

simple enough for the average individual to take advantage of, yet another peculiarity of mankind. So many opportunities … so many fresh starts… so many blank pages…. Who’s to say when the moment will be seized, a la Dead Poets Society’s “carpe diem” mantra? Well, that’s a simple enough question. You. You are to say. I am to say. We are to say. The next time you are presented with a blank page, grab a pen and start writing. Or at least have the good sense to keep a notepad handy when you wake up.

(ADRC) is holding its 2015 East End Walk for Alzheimer’s and Fall Festival on Saturday, October 17th at the Village Green (intersection of Main Street and Mill Road) in Westhampton Beach. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m., followed by the opening ceremony at 9 a.m. The 5K walk kicks off with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. After the Walk, participants are invited to return to the Village Green for a fall-themed lunch buffet, entertainment and raffles at 11:45 a.m. Participants who raise $100 or more will receive a 2015 Walk lunch tote and a 2015 Walk T-shirt. Costume Parade The Knights of Columbus, Lady of the Island Council, together with the Village of Massapequa Park, will sponsor the annual Halloween Costume Parade on Sunday, October 25th, in Brady Park. Registration for the CANCER WALK SUPPORT - The Long Island League to Abolish Cancer (L.I.L.A.C.) is a volunteer organization that originated in 1967 by ten women who were committed to devoting themselves to funding cancer research projects in the New York metropolitan area. Over the years it has grown to over 150 dedicated members. More than 95% of the money that is raised is donated directly in the form of research grants to purchase specific pieces of lab equipment. The League held their Cancer Walk this year on September 27th at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa.

CHALLENGER BASEBALL JAMBOREE - The Town of Oyster Bay recently hosted the 2015 Challenger Baseball Jamboree at John J. Burns Park. Established in 1989, this special event is a Little League-sanctioned program that gives physically and mentally challenged children the opportunity to play baseball. Adaptations are made to accommodate boys and girls with physical and mental challenges while “buddies” will encourage players to bat and make the plays themselves, but will also assist when necessary.

parade will begin at 12:00 p.m. and the parade and judging will kick off at 1:00 p.m. Costumes will be judged on creativity, originality and execution. Prizes will be awarded in four age groups: (1) under one year old; (2) one to three years old; (3) four to

Photo Submissions Wanted Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia invites residents to submit their photos for consideration for use in a Town publication. “Publications such as the 2015 Summer Guide or Town Calendar showcase some of the many great photos submitted by our residents,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “As the Town utilizes resident-submitted photos throughout the year for various publications, including the Town’s website, residents are invited to submit pictures for consideration all year long. “The fall season brings about many great opportunities for taking photos; or you could submit some of your summer shots depicting any people, places, community events and scenery throughout the Town of Oyster Bay for use in upcoming Town publications,” the Councilwoman said.

Councilwoman Alesia went on to say that photos must be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but professionally developed photos, not inkjet printouts, may also be submitted. E-mailed photos, preferably in a jpeg format, should be sent to the Town’s Public Information Office at m k a n e @ o y s t e r b a y - n y. gov. Printed photographs should be mailed to Oyster Bay Town Hall, Attention Public Information Office, Calendar Photo Submissions, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Entrants will be notified if their photos are selected for the calendar. Residents should make sure their name, address, phone number and photo description accompany the photograph. Do not write in ink on the back of the picture. The photographer is responsible for the

correct spelling of the names of the subjects in the photos, as well as notifying subjects that their picture may appear in a Town of Oyster Bay calendar or other Town material. THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI: SCHOOL OF MY DREAMS I can see myself at The U. This is why I tried really hard to make myself stand out as an applicant. Zachary Goldman, the Assistant Director of Admissions, was happy to answer my questions about applying, and calm my anxiety. He informed us that, even though my grades and standardized test scores are pretty competitive, the holistic admissions process puts an emphasis on the applicant as a whole. With any luck, I’ll be able to put this advice to good use. After touring many competitive schools and narrowing my options, the University of Miami kept floating to the top of the

pile. I plan on touring the University of Miami again this weekend, just to further my desired transition into a Miami Hurricane. I’ve picked my institution of higher education, and now I can only hope that they pick me. I’m excited about the possibility of spending the next two years alongside my brother at one of the best colleges in the country, and I’m really looking forward to spending the next four years at my dream school. My past has shaped me in to the person I am today, but the University of Miami will make me the man I hope to become in the future.
