Six out of nine schools in the Massapequa School District were named “Reward Schools” by New York State Education Commissioner John B. King, Jr. in recognition of high student achievement or growth. Reward Schools are classified as either “highest performing” or “highest progressing.” East Lake, Fairfield, Lockhart and McKenna elementary schools, as well as Berner Middle School and Massapequa High School, were all identified as “highest performing” schools based on student proficiency on state assessments school-wide and among certain subgroups, and graduation rates. The combined $425M project is the largest capital construction project within the State University of New York (SUNY) system in the past two decades. President Stanley also announced that the new Children’s Hospital has now received nearly $20 million in philanthropic contributions from hundreds of community members and businesses. This total includes a $9 million matching challenge grant from an anonymous donor, which was met recently when the Knapp Swezey Foundation pledged $2.7 million toward Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. “Today is a celebration for the children – the past, present and future patients

of Stony Brook Children’s Hospital,” Dr. Stanley said. “Stony Brook Children’s ensures that Long Island’s 400,000 children and their families have access to state-of-the-art pediatric services close to home.” Stony Brook Children’s Hospital is the only dedicated children’s hospital located in the 100 miles between the Nassau/Queens border and Montauk, and the only children’s hospital on Long Island associated with a medical research institution. Dr. Stanley paid tribute to state Sens. LaValle (R-Port Jefferson) and Flanagan (R-East Northport) for being such strong advocates for Stony Brook Children’s. “Our children – and our children’s children – owe a debt of gratitude to you for making this day a reality,” he said. “This hospital will

provide a healthcare facility that is second to none in our region,” Sen. LaValle said. “I am happy to be instrumental in the delivery of what will be a leading healthcare facility for children.” Sen. Flanagan added, “The expansion of Children’s Hospital continues to solidify Stony Brook as a premiere teaching hospital, delivering the highest quality of medical care from some of the best doctors and medical staff in the world.” The new hospital will feature private familycentric rooms; separate pediatric inpatient areas for oncology, adolescent and intensive care; the general pediatrics unit; a pediatric procedure suite; patient playrooms and a family lounge. Farewell To A Legend By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I first became a Yankees fan back in the fall of 1995, as the team made its first run at the postseason since 1981, with the legendary Don Mattingly at its helm. For the first time in my lifetime, I understood the magnitude of this storied organization. And then, just like that, the run was over. Mattingly walked off into the sunset, having never made it to a World Series. The end of an era. But there, waiting in the wings, was a rookie shortstop, destined to pick up the torch and run with it. And run he did, for the next 20 seasons, leading the Yankees to five World Championships

and racking up countless milestones along the way. Derek Jeter exemplified what it meant to be a true Yankee in an era when there were very few, if any, athletes doing things the “right” way, never mind in a city as unforgiving as New York. Much has been said, and written, over these last several weeks – really, throughout the past year, since Jeter announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2014 season – analyzing the legacy of the player, the upbringing of the man, his place in Yankees, and baseball, lore. To that, I can only add the following: while he may never have been the “best” in any one statistical category, as

relentlessly pointed out by rival fans and the national media, he was undeniably in a class by himself in the only categories that counted – dignity, sportsmanship, integrity… and, oh yeah, he had quite the knack for coming through in the clutch, when the stakes were the highest, the pressure the greatest. Not bad for an “overrated” player, right? Yankees fan or not, these last several weeks have been quite the emotional rollercoaster. An historic era in Yankees history has come to a close, the only one my generation has had the privilege to witness. And what a privilege it was.

The Town of Oyster Bay 2014-2015 Distinguished Artists Concert kicks off the fall season with a number of performances at various libraries throughout the Town, Councilman Joe Pinto announced. “The Distinguished Artists Concert series returns this fall after once again proving to be one of the Town’s most popular programs. Our monthly performances run throughout the year and feature a diverse collection of musical acts and dance programs,” Councilman Pinto stated. “The concerts are all free of charge and illustrate the various interests our residents here in the Town have. These concerts provide residents with the finest cultural and performing arts entertainment in the comfort and convenience

Soon, the challenge funneled down to all grade levels and became the talk of the school as students excitedly purchased their sheets and, in a fun way, improved their math skills while donating to a great cause. “All the students were gung ho about it because they all knew about the Ice Bucket Challenge over the summer,” said Cunha. “Kids were using their snack money to purchase math sheets. Our Lockhart

families were also very generous.” After numerous math sheets were purchased and hundreds of math problems were completed, a total of $829 was raised for ALS research. The school celebrated their fundraising (and math problem-solving) efforts with an outdoor assembly where nearly 20 teachers and administrators, including Cunha, took the real Ice Bucket Challenge in front of the whole student body. When the buckets of icy water were released, the students screamed and cheered with delight, marking a “cool” ending to a successful school-wide event.

offering so many wonderful opportunities for students. “I am proud of the variety of Junior Achievement programs that I am able to provide to students so they have opportunities to explore careers through guest speakers, career fairs, internships, and relevant, hands-on learning experiences,” DeLury said. “I love when a student expresses to me that because of one of these programs, they are more confident in the direction they want to take after they leave Massapequa High School.” Through the High School Heroes program she’s helped aspiring teachers attain real classroom instruction, management and lessonplanning experience. “Because of this program, some students realize that teaching is

their passion while others discover hands-down that the career is not for them,” DeLury said. In the JA Mobile Financial Park program, students learn financial literacy in the classroom and then visit the financial park to apply what they’ve learned. The park consists of a miniature city with 19 custom-designed storefronts that represent various budget categories. “Within this city, students experience firsthand the challenges of making financial decisions that are within the means of their uniquely assigned life situation,” she said. DeLury coordinates JP Morgan Chase Business Days, which bring in representatives from the company to educate students about careers and work with them on completing a business

case study. Many students also participate in the Fed Ex Leadership Conference and the National Grid Leadership Conference where various company leaders present workshops, keynote speeches and networking opportunities for students. DeLury is a member of Work Experience Coordinators Association (WECA). She holds a bachelor’s degree in business from Dowling College and a master’s degree in Instructional Technology from New York Institute of Technology. She is currently working towards an Educational Leadership Certificate from Long Island University/ C.W. Post. Movement Speaks Studio of Dance recently opened its doors in Babylon Village, at 225 Deer Park Avenue. After having danced for 27 years and taught for nearly 15 of those years, partners Aileen Smisek and Megan Connell decided to take the leap and open a dance studio of their own. Movement Speaks offers classes for children from ages 18 months through adult levels. New Report Cards for curriculum and instruction. “They reviewed report card samples from more than two dozen districts across the nation and solicited teacher and parent feedback over a sixmonth period to ensure the creation of a high-quality instrument.” The new report cards maintain a similar format in each grade level and are designed to be easier to understand than those previously issued. Singer, who has a long-standing relationship with the district, “immediately thought of Massapequa,” said Brian Dowd, Massapequa School District’s curriculum associate for social studies, K-12. “Mr. Singer regularly sends student teachers to be trained here because of the instruction they receive on how to be innovative in their approach and on how to reach students and help them become successful,” Dowd said. “Massapequa has a great reputation in the social studies community on Long

Island. Our teachers are known for being innovative and on target with what they need to do to make our students successful.” During their visit, Harada and Nii, along with Singer and a translator, met with Dowd and social studies teacher Dana Robbins. Robbins was named an Outstanding High School Social Studies Teacher of the Year from the Long Island Council for Social Studies and a GilderLehrman New York State History Teacher of the Year for her use of interactive teaching methods, which range from having her students dress as historic figures and debating from the character’s point-ofview to having them create videos featuring their

perspective on historical events. Robbins told Harada and Nii that she attributes her success with student engagement to being exceptionally organized and developing specifically structured lessons that incorporate a variety of motivating techniques. “It’s also important to be approachable to all students so they feel comfortable asking questions and to be empathetic to their needs,” she said. During a classroom observation, which took place on September 11, Robbins discussed how the terrorist attacks unified the United States and increased a sense of nationalism,

Champions Against Hunger Now in its 21st year, Island Harvest Food Bank’s annual Taste of the Harvest Celebration remains the organization’s premier fundraiser to help provide critical food support to more than 300,000 Long Islanders struggling with hunger every day. This year’s gala will be held on Tuesday, October 21st, at 6 p.m. at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York, and will recognize three outstanding individuals

for their commitment to helping end hunger and reducing food waste on Long Island. Not your typical fundraising dinner, the Taste of the Harvest Celebration brings together Long Island’s leading restaurants, caterers, country clubs and other fine food establishments to offer guests a sumptuous sampling of gourmet food and desserts. Other highlights of the evening include a silent auction

offering a variety of lavish prizes to suit everyone’s taste. The Taste of the Harvest Celebration will also be the occasion to honor three exceptional Long Islanders for their ongoing support of Island Harvest and its mission.
