the television is an ideal way to decompress. With that, the new fall tv season is upon us, providing hours of entertainment to choose from, or randomly ﬂip through, as the case may be. It’s funny, but back in the old VCR days, I would painstakingly plan out my viewing schedule, determining which shows to watch live, which to record, sometimes on multiple devices. Now, with the advent of DVR, I record almost everything, preferring instead to fast forward through the commercials. Of course, with this, you run the risk of having particularly popular plot lines “spoiled” for you on social media, due to everyone’s incessant need to instantaneously offer a running commentary on just about every aspect of life. What ever did we do before Twitter, I wonder? Speaking of, rumor has it

that the social media giant will be doubling the character limit of its Tweets, a piece of “news” completely irrelevant to most people; yet somehow, it has dominated the news cycle of late. Sometimes, concise is the way to be. No need to elaborate. The more space we have, the more we tend to ramble on… and, well, you know… But I digress. As October sets in, and perhaps with it a bit of autumnal weather - not that I’m complaining about the Indian summer we have been enjoying - hopefully everyone will take advantage of the fall festivals, apple and pumpkin picking and Halloween festivities happening from one end of the island to the next. Or perhaps a simple stroll through the changing leaves is more your speed. If so, might I suggest a pair of tap shoes? It does tend to lighten the mood. Happy October everyone!

Educational resources old and new were used in a literacy lesson at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Fourth-graders in Theresa LiCausi’s class used video technology to analyze their independent reading books. The project is just one way that teachers are taking advantage of the expansion of Massapequa’s one-toone Chromebook initiative. Elementary students in third through fifth grades now have their own assigned devices which are kept in school. Ms. LiCausi had her students use

Flipgrid to make 90-second videos about the books they are reading. Children were asked to discuss what they liked and what they learned. “Independent reading is about what they want to read, now what they’re told to read,” she said. “They make connections and Flipgrid is a way for each child to have their own voice.” As students were making their videos, some were at their desks, others were gathered around a table and many were spread out on the ﬂoor. That’s what a true Flipgrid community is, Ms.

A Lesson in Climate

LiCausi said. The videos were shared on the class Haiku page for students and parents to view. The youngsters were asked to record responses to at least three of their classmates’ videos. Shawn Hillkewicz, who read “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw,” said he enjoyed the project because “I love sharing what I do with other people.” In his video, he talked about how he liked the beginning of the book and recounted some of the humorous moments.

Natural disasters are the first unit of study for fourth-graders in the magnet program at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District and students will use the opportunity to help those who have recently been affected by hurricanes. Teacher Michelle Scott introduced the lesson in which students will study various natural

disasters over the next several months including hurricanes, earthquakes, blizzards, tsunamis and tornadoes. They will work in teams to create a simulation of one of those events, following the engineering design process. She also reviewed the active hurricane season and talked about ways to help the victims. McKenna will raise money through

adoptaclassroom.org for teachers impacted by Hurricane Irma so they can buy supplies to restock their classrooms. Ms. Scott explained that people in other states helped Long Islanders after Tropical Storm Irene and Superstorm Sandy, and students here should do their part to help others affected by the latest storms.

Required Qualifications and Skills: • Experience in alarm systems, security products, locking products, access control or video. • Some experience in help desk, technical support, customer service or telephone support is desirable. • Good computer literacy, including MS Windows-based systems and basic networking experience (i.e. understanding of routers, switches, TCP/IP, etc.) • Extremely detail oriented, possess a high sense of urgency and demonstrate world class follow through skills. • Customer service oriented, ‘people person’ with great communication skills (verbal and written). • ‘Team Player’ with ability to work both individually and collaboratively. • Able to work on site within the hours of 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday (full 8.5 hour shifts). • Fluency in Spanish is a plus, although not required. Documenting Aspirations Fifth-graders at Unqua Elementary School are getting a taste of modern technology by recording their own videos. With the Massapequa School District’s expansion of its one-to-one Chromebook initiative, each student in grades 3-12 now has his or her own device. Students in Deanna

Musacchia’s class used Flipgrid to make short introduction videos, “Look Who’s In Fifth Grade.” Each child had to make a recording of no more than 90 seconds discussing what he or she is looking forward to in this new school year. The videos were then shared on the class website so the students could view

each other’s creations and also show their parents. Ms. Musacchia said the project was designed to familiarize students with a tool they will use regularly and she hopes to have them create and share more videos throughout the year relating to various lessons.
