Her experience includes coordinating Response to Intervention for a central school district as well as

Principal Named teaching at SUNY New Paltz. Her most recent position before joining Nassau BOCES was as a Coordinator of Special Education in Hyde Park CSD. In her new role, Ms. Paolucci will be responsible for all aspects of administration and supervision of the students in the high school as well as the staff members. She will provide ongoing student support, development,
discipline and crisis intervention along with keeping up with all the changes in SED mandates and guidelines. Ms. Paolucci holds a Bachelor of Science in both education and psychology from SUNY New Paltz, a master’s degree in special education from SUNY New Paltz, and a master’s in educational administration and certificate of advanced study from The College of Saint Rose, Albany.
Part of the Nassau BOCES Department of Special Education, the Iris Wolfson High School (IWHS) provides an environment that stimulates academic achievement, encourages self-reliance, and motivates students to consider higher education. Strength for Life was officially formed, we have helped over 1000 cancer patients and survivors regain their “strength for life.” We hold classes at Stony Brook Cancer Center, Winthrop University, Mather Hospital, STARS Rehab (part of NSLIJ), Long Island Cancer Wellness Center, and our newest locations at the Southampton Hospital, the Dolan Family Center and the Commack JCC. We have reached out to Peconic and Brookhaven and this grant gives us the confidence we can support all these endeavors and then some. Strength for Life is very active with support groups throughout Long Island and we are on the advisory committee for the Suffolk County Cancer Awareness Task Force. In addition, we were voted 2013 LIWA (Long Island Women’s Agenda) Organization of

a 21-year-old college senior and concert pianist when he lost use of his left hand. Tests were performed and he received a diagnosis of medulloblastoma. Eighteen years later, Matt continues to be a passionate advocate for young adults affected by cancer. More than 400 survivors of pediatric cancer were joined by their families

The community of St. John the Baptist is proud to announce that it will be hosting its First Annual Research Symposium on Monday, October 6th from 6 to 8 p.m. This symposium will feature the work and reflections of SJB students who are members of our GENESIS science research program. Students will present abstracts of their work and the symposium will move into breakout sessions in which each student will make a more detailed posterbased description of their work and take questions from participants. The evening will conclude with a summary review of research posters and an informal discussion. The event is designed to spark an interest in seventh and eighth grade students who love science and may be interested

OFF TO A GREAT SEASON - The Massapequa Varsity girls volleyball team is off to yet another great season, leading in the AA Conference with a 6-0 record thus far. On Saturday, September 6th - they won the Hendrick Hudson Tournament, after being undefeated in pool play & then sweeping the playoffs. Sophomore Jamie Smith and senior Mikayla Porr were both named to the All Tournament Team, while senior Jamie Schlesinger was named tournament MVP. The Chiefs also took 2nd place in both the Kings Park Tournament & the Lindenhurst Tournament ending both in playoff tiebreakers.
ACTIVITY FAIR - As a means for freshmen to become acclimated to the school’s offerings, Plainedge High School held its first ever activity fair in September. Held during lunch periods, advisors and past club members were available for freshmen to speak with regarding clubs such as the art club, international club, key club and robotics. Selecting the best of the best, Massapequa High School string bass player Robert Catinella has become the second musician from the district to be chosen to perform in the National Association for Music Education’s (NAfME) All-National Honors Concert Band, possibly setting a new musical trend for the district. He joins 674 of the most talented and skilled high school music students across the United States to perform at a gala concert, October 29th, in the
Presidential Ballroom of the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Conference Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Catinella is one of eight band students from Long Island and one of five from Nassau County to be chosen for this highly selective ensemble. Selected students have earned a spot in their state-level honor ensemble programs and have competed against other top students. “Robert is a shining example of a student musician whose talent has broken achievement levels, thanks to the combined

The Massapequa School District began the school year with changes in administration, 18 new teachers and the return of all staff members who were excessed last year. Longtime educator Laura Lai - who first joined the district in 1984 as a special education teacher and most recently served four years as Assistant Principal of East Lake Elementary School - has been named Elementary Special Education Supervisor, replacing Linda Cohen who retired in June. In her new role, Lai oversees the Special Education program at East Lake and Unqua elementary schools. She is responsible for supervising and conducting classroom observations, and providing ongoing guidance and direction to both teachers and parents. Lai brings many years of training experience to another aspect of her new position, that of District Wilson Literacy Advisor, which includes training and supporting teachers with various Wilson reading programs, such as “Fundations” in grades K-2, and the newly adopted program, “Just Words.” She plans to participate in training of the Scholastic’s Read 180 program to offer guidance and support to teachers who implement the program. Replacing Lai as East Lake Assistant Principal is Bryan Piotrowski who came from the teaching ranks of Unqua Elementary School. Piotrowski taught for 11 years in the district and most recently assisted in leadership operations while earning a Post Master’s Certificate in Educational Leadership from Stony Brook University. At the secondary level, Massapequa High School’s Director of Guidance, Paul Weber, has taken on new

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that the Town of Oyster Bay has again been chosen to host the Long Island Senior Softball Association’s (LISSA) Division 5 “All-Star” Game. This year’s game will take place on Monday, October 6th, at 6 p.m. at John J. Burns Town Park, which is located on Merrick Road in Massapequa. “This is another unique and fun event that the Town Board is glad to have back in the Town of Oyster Bay,” said Supervisor Venditto. “These players are quite passionate about softball and they give it 110 percent when they are on the field. Because of this,
they play at a high level and make this an exciting event to be a part of.” LISSA’s Division 5 is a league for players 68 years of age and older, from throughout communities across Long Island. The league plays throughout the spring and summer and some of its most accomplished players are selected to play in the “AllStar” game. “I am proud that the Town of Oyster Bay hosts many exciting and entertaining events such as the Long Island Senior Softball Association’s Division 5 All-Star Game,” Supervisor Venditto said. “The Town’s parks and fields are some of the finest
