n September 21st, secondgraders at Plainedge School District’s Eastplain Elementary School took part in an international art and literacy project, Pinwheels for Peace. In class, each student decorated a pinwheel and put messages of peace on its spokes. If you happened to be at Cedar Creek Park on Saturday morning, September 19th, you might have seen groups of scouts in the park, equipped with compasses, maps and clues. They were working on the Orienteering Merit Badge. I’ve been reflecting on my high school days quite a bit lately. Maybe it’s the back to school fever in the air, the specter of autumn and homecoming celebrations on the horizon… or perhaps the fact that I have seen more fellow graduates and former teachers in the last several weeks than I have, well, probably over the last five years. Not that reminiscing is anything new for me, per se, but I suppose the more you reconnect, the more vibrant the faded memories become. What were once old snapshots and slightly dogeared pages of a yearbook are brought to life once again, conjuring happy thoughts of days gone by.

Sure, life has gone on since then and taken us with it in various directions; but there is still something about those good old high school days that brings a smile to the face, mine anyway. They say some of the best friendships are forged during those formative years and that, if you hold on to even a handful of them, you should consider yourself extremely lucky. I tend to agree. As much as we have all moved on – with some pursuing college degrees and careers, others settling down to start a family, and still others on a path all their own – there is a part of me that believes, deep down, we are all simply trying to reclaim that lost innocence of youth, of days when life seemed simpler

On September 15th, a flash mob consisting of members from across Long Island performed a dancing welcome home for a Massapequa family who was homeless for almost three years due to super storm Sandy. When the Baillie’s family house was destroyed by the storm, they were forced to move in with friends, family, and had to endure the turmoil of moving in and out of multiple rental homes. To show support for this loving, caring, family, the community rallied together to make their home coming very special. Their daughter, Nicole, a gifted dancer at A Step Above Performance Arts, help coordinate the details. Ashley Magaddino, a talented, award-winning choreographer from A Sep Above Performing Arts, choreographed the amazing welcome home

THE LOSS OF INNOCENCE The loss of innocence is a common, reoccurring theme in high-school level English literature. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, for instance, loss of innocence is seen when Jack attempts to hunt and kill his first pig. In The Kite Runner, Hassan loses his innocence when he is raped by Assef in an alley. In the wellknown novel written by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, the creature loses his innocence the day he was created, due to Victor abandoning him in his basement. Loss of innocence is even prevalent in movies, such as in Alice in Wonderland, when Alice cluelessly drinks from the “drink me” glass. Some can even argue that she lost her innocence before that, when

she actually tumbled down the rabbit hole. But is the theme of loss of innocence ubiquitous in only literature or cinemas? Not at all. Loss of innocence is a real live thing that people experience daily. And with technology at our fingertips, we are exposed to this recurring theme at increasingly younger ages. Television is vulgar and crude. Commercials are even shockingly inappropriate. Reality TV is showcasing and glamorizing the downfall of society. Children are being exposed to this before they even leave elementary school. Dropping the f-bomb doesn’t have the same shock value it did years ago. The idea of sex and sexual innuendos are thrown around. Children

see this, young adults see this - and it makes everything look like no big deal. No one is scared of anything anymore. No one is innocent anymore. Everyone likes to say that they are, but no one truly is. Everyone has tried things they weren’t supposed to. Everyone has incorporated profane words into their daily vocabulary. We are exposed to this on television, so it’s grown to be acceptable. To sum it up, loss of innocence is a common theme in English literature and Hollywood films. But now, with the help of constant, oneclick technology, we can all lose our innocence as young children. And we can all do it together.

We communicated with them in Spanish and I was surprised that I was able to hold a conversation, although they described my Spanish as ‘understandable,’ and it was amazing to be able to speak the language outside of a classroom setting.” “When we weren’t working, we had time to bond with the villagers,” Kate said. “A couple of women would prepare food and we had a welcoming party. They taught us how to dance to their music. I also had the opportunity to connect with the children through song. I remembered a song I learned in my ninth-grade Spanish class with Mrs. [Amelie] Czekaj called, “Los Pollitos Dicen Pio Pio Pio.” Señora Czekaj filmed us singing and dancing to the song. I began to sing it to some of the younger children and, right away, they started singing it with me and it was such a happy moment to bond this way!”

Kate credits her teachers Czekaj and Ernest Kabelka for inspiring her to become immersed in foreign cultures and for having students speak Spanish in front of the class or translate in front of the class, which she believes helped prepare her for her trip. “This was such an amazing experience; I learned so much; I expanded my vocabulary and feel more confident about my Spanish-speaking abilities,” she said. “I hope to continue taking Spanish classes in college and plan to study abroad to enhance my education.” In addition to Spanish, Kate is in her third year of studying American Sign Language and has traveled to various countries, including Scotland, England, Italy and France, which also has fostered her love for globetrotting and experiencing new cultures.

“My Spanish teachers in the Massapequa School District taught me that if I didn’t know a word in Spanish, I should work around it by using what I know.” That’s exactly what senior Kate Fahy did when she traveled to Costa Rica for two weeks to participate in various community service projects. Settling in the village of San Jose de Rivas, Kate and a group of 18 teenagers from around the world came together to move large rock piles and level land for construction, build a concession stand for local villagers to sell their goods, and paint and run electricity for an office building through an organized program coordinated by Putney Student Travel. “We slept in sleeping bags on the floor of a community building that had a little kitchen,” Kate explained. “Every day we would wake up at 5:30 a.m. and by 8 a.m. the children would come and

Family Fall Festival Residents and their families are invited to the Town of Oyster Bay’s seventh annual Family Fall & Halloween Festivals, which will be held on both the Town’s North and South shores. The first date of the festival will be on Saturday, October 10th, from 1 to 4 p.m. at SyossetWoodbury Community Park,

Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury and the second date will be on Saturday, October 24th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, Unqua and Merrick Roads, in Massapequa. Each year, residents come out to this annual free event to celebrate the arrival of the fall season with fun activities

for children and adults alike, including Halloween crafts, a hayride, bouncies, games, photo opportunities and refreshments. There will also be a ‘U-Pick’ pumpkin patch for children to enjoy the unique experience of picking out their own pumpkin, as well as decorating the pumpkin to any fun design

Registration for the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Ice Hockey Program will take place on Sunday, October 11th (8:00 to 10:00 a.m.), Monday, October 12th (7:00 to 9:00 p.m.) and Thursday, October 15th (7:00 to 9:00 p.m.) at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center located at 1001 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage (in Bethpage Community Park). Ice hockey schedules will be distributed at registration. Youngsters from the ages three to thirteen can take advantage of The Youth Ice Hockey Program to hone their skating and hockey skills under the guidance of ice hockey coaches. The Youth Ice Hockey Program has received acclaim by the NHL, who have partnered with the Town for a ‘Hockey is For Everyone’ initiative that promotes hockey programming and youth enrichment. Anyone interested in registering for the Youth Hockey Program must bring a copy of their birth certificate, proof of Town of Oyster Bay residency (canceled check, utility bill, etc.) and a check or money order (no cash). All registrants must bring these items, even if they have participated in the past. A parent or legal guardian must be present at registration. Registration fees are as follows: Tot Hockey: $200 for one child being registered (plus $150 for each additional child in the same family), and the Youth Hockey Clinic: $275 for one child being registered (plus $225 for each additional child in the same family). Please note, if you are registering a child for the Youth Clinic AND another child or children for the Tot Hockey program, the discounted price will apply to the “Tot Hockey” fee(s).
