The Massapequa School District announces that there has been a change to the 20172018 school calendar regarding emergency makeup days as a result of the Memorandum of Agreement reached between the board of education and Massapequa Federation of Teachers. In the event schools are closed one day for snow or another unanticipated reason, the makeup day will be Friday, May 25th. If a second emergency makeup day is warranted, it will not be rescheduled. Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich wishes to notify town residents that the 2017 General Tax Collection Warrant has been closed, and all related records have been turned over to the Nassau County Treasurer. The original warrant specified that $586,014,575.54 was to be collected to support Nassau County, Town of Oyster Bay, and special tax districts. Assessment reductions and tax cancellations amounted to $15,002.66 (0.002%). Nassau County’s portion was $277,636,494.62 (47%). The Town of Oyster Bay’s portion was $124,703,617.65 (21%), and the special tax district’s portion was $173,544,839.72 (30%). A list of delinquent property payments was reported to the County Treasurer, amounting to $10,114,620.89 (1.8%). Receiver Stefanich noted that property owners with delinquent taxes would be contacted by the Nassau County Treasurer’s office. Owners will be receiving letters specifying taxes owed along with applicable penalties and late payment fees. The 2017-2018 School Tax levy bill printing will commence on October 1st, and mailing will start in early October. Receiver Stefanich asks property owners to be patient when calling the Tax Office for information on property
taxes due to the usual high volume of calls received at the beginning of a new tax collection. Residents are requested to have the school district, section,
block and lot numbers of the property in question available. This information is listed on the tax bill and on the property deed.

Exploring Science Science students at Massapequa High School are learning in state-ofthe-art laboratories this year, as renovations are progressing as part of the 2014 capital construction bond. Work was completed in most of the 18 science labs in the building’s west wing during the summer, and the rest of the rooms will be finished in the coming
months. The renovations include new lab tables and chairs, teacher workstations, cabinets, sinks, whiteboards, projectors, ceilings and lighting, floor tiles and doors. Most rooms are multipurpose to accommodate many different types of science courses, and are designed for both labs and
lectures. There are fixed two-person tables with electricity connections for Chromebooks and microscopes along with moveable tables to create four-person workstations. Chemistry labs have stationary four-person lab stations with built-in sinks and gas feeds. “We want our students to be able to work together in groups,” said Curriculum

Internet safety is a priority in the Massapequa School District, particularly with ever increasing access to technology, and students at Berner Middle School recently learned what they can do to protect themselves online. As part of their library orientations, new sixthand seventh-graders learned about the online footprints they create and how their social media activity can affect them in the future. Library media specialists Laurie Martucci-Walsh and Julie Rogers cautioned against a “false sense of privacy” and

cited specific posts that have gotten people into trouble. They added that colleges and companies often review social media when considering prospective students or employees. “This is something that we do because we care about the students and we want them to be safe,” Ms. Rogers said. She added that there is an increased emphasis on internet safety because all middle school students in the district now have their own Chromebooks. The librarians reviewed the Responsible Use Policy that the students signed to
use the district’s hardware, software and network. Ms. Martucci-Walsh said that internet safety workshops begin in first grade, and are appropriate for each age. She explained that the lessons in middle school go “a step further” because many students are active users of social media, bloggers and vloggers. Eighth-graders participated in an internet safety workshop called “Yay or Nay?” in which they were given different scenarios regarding social media and debated how those situations should be handled.

Earning Music Honors Six Massapequa High School student-musicians were selected to the New York State School Music Association’s All-State Conference, and one was named to the All-National Honor Ensemble. Vocalists Antoinette Corigliano, Sebastian Diaquoi, Christian Scala, Jenny Testaverde and Alexandra Zografo were selected for the NYSSMA Mixed Chorus and bass player Kayla Grady was chosen for the Symphony
Orchestra. Thousands of students auditioned for this honor during solo and ensemble festivals throughout the state. Selections were made based on receiving perfect scores and judges’ recommendations. The conference will be held from November 30th through December 3rd in Rochester. Vocalist Matthew Ferrugia will sing with the All-National Honor Ensemble’s Mixed Choir.
The program, hosted by the National Association for Music Education, will be held from November 26th-29th at Walt Disney World in Orlando. High School Principal Patrick DiClemente, Curriculum Associate for Music Dr. David Gaines and music teachers Ilena Dempsey, Nichole Greene and Marjorie Spagnuolo congratulated these students on their accomplishments.
