Enjoying over 75 air and space crafts in 8 exhibit galleries, they toured the museum, learning about the history of flight, from Roosevelt Field starting out as a small airport to what went wrong on Apollo 13. The students learned about astronaut life in zero gravity and then enjoyed lunch at The Red Planet.

to Sound Relay starts at Jones Beach State Park and finishes on the grounds of the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay. 120 eight-person teams will navigate their way through 15 different Long Island townships starting in Wantagh, traveling through Seaford, Massapequa Park, Massapequa, Farmingdale, Old Bethpage, Plainview, Woodbury, West Hills, crossing into Huntington and hitting the Long Island Sound in Lloyd Harbor, returning to Nassau County via Cold Spring Harbor and Syosset, reaching Oyster Bay Cove, and finally hitting Oyster Bay. “The Ocean to Sound Relay is one of the most unique and anticipated events of every year, attracting runners from the entire tri-state area,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage. “We’re happy to participate again, and witness some amazing athletic abilities, organized impeccably by the Greater Long Island Running Club, and all for a deserving cause.” There are 15 different categories for runners including men’s, women’s, mixed open, men’s masters, women’s masters, mixed masters, men’s seniors masters, women’s seniors masters, men’s super seniors, women’s super seniors, corporate, law enforcement/ firefighter, physically

Bethpage Federal Credit Union, a dedicated supporter of health and wellness initiatives on Long Island, announces its sponsorship of the Greater Long Island Running Club’s 28th Annual Ocean to Sound Relay. The Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay, which takes place on Sunday, September 29th, will take runners across both Nassau and Suffolk Counties with 120 teams of eight runners each traversing a 50-mile scenic course stretching from the South Shore to the North Shore of Long Island. This will be the fourth consecutive year Bethpage has sponsored the event. Nearly 1,000 runners are expected to participate in the relay, which will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services, money raised from the relay will go directly to support the organization’s Long Island Chapter. Long Island runner Alan End, who founded the relay back in 1985, is the relay director. According to Greater Long Island Running Club President Mike Polansky, “The Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay is an exciting race for both runners and spectators. Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich notifies Town residents that the 2013 General Tax Collection Warrant has been closed, and all related records have been turned over to the Nassau County Treasurer. The original warrant specified that $503,854,974.86 was to be collected to support Nassau County, Town of Oyster Bay, and special tax districts. Assessment reductions and tax cancellations amounted to $9,292.37 (0.002%). Nassau County was paid $255,839,256.87 (51%) from the collection. The Town of Oyster Bay was paid $86,113,208.68 (17%), and the special tax districts were paid $152,680,645.33 (30%). A list of delinquent property payments was reported to the County Treasurer, amounting to $9,212,571.61 (2%).

Receiver Stefanich noted that property owners with delinquent taxes would be contacted by the Nassau County Treasurer’s office. Owners will be receiving letters specifying taxes owed along with applicable penalties and late payment fees. The 2013-2014 School Tax levy bill printing will commence on October 1st, and mailing will start in early October. Receiver Stefanich asks property owners to be patient when calling the Tax Office for information on property taxes due to the usual high volume of calls received at the beginning of a new tax collection. Residents are requested to have the school district, section, block and lot numbers of the property in question available. This information is listed on the tax bill and on the property deed.

Galluzzo” has joined forces with Music For Life to raise money for a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon. Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. The Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo has announced that its inaugural Fall Festival will take place on weekends starting September 28th and running through October 27th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. While many Long Island outdoor locations close down in the fall and do not reopen until spring or summer, the Game Farm will stay open on Saturdays and Sundays in early autumn, even after the regular season ends on Columbus Day, October 14th. The Game Farm is partnering with Natural Earth Farms who will provide a pumpkin patch and farm stand. There will also be craft vendors and special activities, such as face painting, a kiddie hay maze, pumpkin slingshot, pony rides and corn target sponsored by Hurricane Grill & Wings. Anyone who

hits the bull’s eye will win five free wings courtesy of Hurricane Grill & Wings. Seasonal refreshments will be on sale, including hot cider, hot chocolate, hot dogs, corn dogs on a stick, funnel cake, french fries and candied apples. Some of the animals are moved offsite into warmer quarters and will not be here during the fall. But if the weather stays warm, visitors can see the giraffe, monkeys and lemurs. If the weather gets colder, there are still lots of other animals and activities to enjoy, including handfeeding the llamas, bottlefeeding goats and sheep and Bambiland, where adults and children can hand-feed the deer. The zebra, cougar, ostrich, and buffalo can be fed through a feed tube. It’s fun to watch them eat! There will also be daily Surprise Animal Guests where visitors can get up close and personal,

learn and take photos. Some animals include the alligator, tortoise, bunny, a silky chicken, and more! Admission is $16.95 for adults, $14.95 for children ages 3-11. LIBOR Hamptons Chapter was recently formed. LIBOR first became aware of this noteworthy event when REALTOR® Franklin Butz, organizer and creator, was awarded the December 2012 REALTOR® Spirit Award. Franklin, aside from a being a Realtor® for the past forty years, has also been a dedicated member of the HBLC for over 30 years. As an avid runner/ jogger who participated in the Long Island Half Marathon, Shelter Island 10K and many other running events, he saw how popular these events were becoming. With this knowledge he proposed and completely organized the fundraising event for the HBLC in 2011. The Walk/Run came to be called “Over the Bridge” because the course spans over the extraordinary Ponquogue Bridge. “It was a wonderful opportunity to meet with so many people and paint a better image of what a REALTOR® is and cares about.” added Carlos Diaz, LIBOR Public Relations Committee Vice Chairperson, who was not only there from Queens to support the event but ran the 10K as well. Fading Fast By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s official. Autumn has arrived, and with it, quickly fading are those last golden rays of summer sunshine, any lingering tan lines, the prospect of wearing flip flops and short sleeves … and, as of this printing, the Yankees’ playoff hopes. Just like that. What a difference one week can make, right? I know, I know … get over it. Seasons come and go, weather changes and we all had just better get used to it – and quickly. Each month brings with it its own unique excitement, and there are those who far prefer the

winter cold to any number of days spent lounging on the beach. (I would not be one of them, in case you couldn’t tell.) But here we are, at any rate, on the verge of October, with the holiday season lurking right over the horizon. Tis’ the season for Oktoberfest and Fall Festivals, high school and college Homecoming parades and games, pumpkin picking and Halloween costume parties. Before you know it, we’ll be making our shopping lists for Black Friday. And, just like that, summer will be a distant memory.

So time to dig out the fall sweaters, store the bathing suits away for another season, and embrace the crunch of the leaves beneath your boots. School is back, football is gearing up and the new fall TV season is in full premiere mode. Doesn’t sound so bad after all, does it? Not bad at all... Part of the beauty of living on Long Island is that we are fortunate to experience all four seasons – may as well start enjoying them. There will always be something to look forward to, somewhere else you would rather be … but there’s still nothing quite like the here and now.

Gianna Raimi, a dance major at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), from the Massapequa UFSD, was recently named a ScholarArtist by the Long Island Arts Alliance and Newsday. She earned the honor for excellence as a practicing artist and for superior academic achievement. Gianna’s love of dance can be traced back to her childhood, when she first started dancing in The Nutcracker. She has performed it every year since, even in the coveted role of the Sugar Plumb Fairy. This might explain Gianna’s preference for ballet. Or it might be her competitive nature. “I like the discipline of ballet,” she says. “You have to strive for perfection.” While she hopes to join a professional ballet company one day, she has explored a number of other forms of dance. “Dance has exposed me to the amazing talent in the world,” she says. “This is such a huge honor,” Gianna says of being named a ScholarArtist. “I’m in extremely talented company.” Beyond the personal accomplishment, the young dancer likes the exposure the award gives to the arts. “It’s fitting for the arts to be acknowledged in this way,” she says. Dance teacher Janice Aguilera describes Gianna as “a ray of sunshine.” Perhaps that’s because of her positive attitude. “She’s always looking to improve,” Aguilera says. “She’s a pleasure to teach.” As a dancer, Gianna has the spirit and perseverance to make it. “She really wants this,” Aguilera says. “I have no doubt she’ll be a success.” “We recognize that you are dedicated to your art and a very valuable asset to your school district,” Scholar-Artist Committee Chairperson John J. Gallagher wrote in a letter to Taylor. “We commend you for your hard work, excellent scholarship and accomplishments.”
