The final group of high school students to be recognized in the program entered college in 2015. UNCF will carry on the National Achievement Scholarship Program’s name and legacy through the newly-designed UNCF Achievement Capstone Program, launching in the spring of 2016. UNCF Achievement Capstone Scholars will be nominated by their college or university presidents, chancellors, and deans based on outstanding academic performance, character, and demonstrated leadership honoring the legacy of the 1964 Civil
Rights Act. Awardees may use the scholarship to pay off outstanding undergraduate educational costs at their current institutions, or to finance additional degrees, professional certifications, and continuing education programs. “UNCF is honored to carry on the name and legacy of a prestigious program which began at a time in our nation where earning a college degree was a social and financial challenge for many African Americans,” said Dr. Michael L. Lomax, UNCF President and CEO. “We are humbled to take on the mantle of the UNCF Achievement Capstone Program, which not only allows UNCF to help students make it to and through college, but now also helps them after they have earned a college degree.”

Game Farm Fall Happenings The Long Island Game Farm will be going into hibernation on Tuesday, October 13th, but the animals aren’t going anywhere just yet. Instead, the zoo has increased its Facebook coupon to $4 off admission and has updated its fall hours and show schedule for the remainder of the season. At the largest combined Children’s Zoo and Wildlife Park on Long Island, guests can see hundreds of animals and get up close and personal with some of their favorite exotic critters. Visitors to the free Leapin’ Lemur Tour at Lemur Circle will have the opportunity to learn about these creatures, which hail from the African sub-continent. Each day, an animal expert from the Game Farm will discuss the lemurs’ habitat, what they eat and how they
communicate. Park attendees are also invited to visit the Zebra, Cougar and Giraffe exhibits to learn some fun facts about these furry friends. Guests can additionally receive a one-on-one Camel Encounter with a zookeeper and the park’s very own camels, Sandy and Sahara. During this event, guests can feed the camels a healthy snack and take photos with them. The Animal Education staff will be there to answer any questions and to share interesting facts about these “ships of the desert.” Tickets can be purchased at the Encounter or from the souvenir stand for $5. The Game Farm will be open on the following days: • September 23rd to 27 (Wednesday to Sunday) • October 1st to 4th (Thursday to Sunday)

Ushering in the Equinox By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Ok, now it’s official. Autumn can commence. Why? Because today is the actual autumnal equinox, the moment all those fall fanatics have been eagerly anticipating since, well, probably since last autumn. I know September 1st is the unofficial introduction of all things pumpkin spice, but, believe it or not, there are a few more factors to consider when introducing a new season. For instance, cooler weather, the start of football and “Sunday Fundays,” playoff baseball, fall TV premieres… all things that were absent as of September 1st. And, while Halloween merchandise
has been on the shelves since July, guess what? It’s still over a month away. And Christmas – don’t even get me started on that. Three months to go. Three MONTHS. Plenty of time. No need to make those lists and check them twice quite yet. And yet… as I write this, the temperature sits at a positively summery 81º - perfect for pumpkin picking, hayrides and corn mazes… if all those things took place on a beach. But no worries, the season is still young – plenty of time for the autumn chill to settle in and the boots and scarves to be dragged out of the closet for that first brisk afternoon walk through the fallen foliage.
‘Tis the season of fall festivals and Oktoberfest celebrations, of raking and home improvement projects, of toasty evenings spent curled up with a (pumpkin) spiced latte and a book. Sure, it has its benefits. If you like that sort of thing. Me, I’ll be the one walking along the shoreline at the beach, camera (or iPhone) in hand, trying to capture the perfect autumnal sunset shot. I’ll get into the spirit eventually. Maybe once October hits. I might even check out the Halloween merchandise. And start making my Christmas list… Nah, who am I kidding. That’s what Black Friday is for.

Residents are invited to take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Fall Adult CoEd Badminton and Adult Co-Ed Volleyball Programs, Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone announced. The programs are open to players who are 18 and older and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center. The badminton program begins Sunday, October 4th and will be conducted on Thursdays from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Fridays from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and Sundays from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The volleyball program begins Tuesday, October 6th and will be held on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9:00 p.m. to 10:30
p.m., and Saturdays from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The programs, which are 12 weeks in duration, are $75 for residents and $100 for non-residents. Proof of residency is required for the discount. In addition to being fun, badminton and volleyball provide excellent forms of aerobic exercise that improve your health and even add extra years to your life. This fall marks a great opportunity for residents to take advantage of these terrific programs. Deadline to Apply The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has announced an October 2nd, application deadline for tuition reimbursement through their historic educational initiative, the Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York State. “The FASNY HELP program has benefitted hundreds of dedicated firefighters serving communities across the State. In addition to helping meet the staffing needs of local departments, a better educated firefighter is simply a better firefighter. For the student volunteers and the fire departments, this is the very definition of a ‘win-win’ situation,” said
FASNY President Robert McConville. Under FASNY HELP, any active volunteer firefighter, in good standing, and who hasn’t already achieved a college degree is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement. The reimbursement is in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of academic courses that the HELP student-volunteer can pursue, either on a full-time or part-time basis. FASNY HELP also covers online courses taken through Empire State College. FASNY HELP funds can be utilized for tuition costs incurred in the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters. Eligible student-volunteers must maintain acceptable levels
of training and volunteer activity while attending school and fulfill a service requirement after they complete their course of study. They must attend a chartered NYS community college; Empire State College’s inclusion in the program has expanded students’ location options. Due to a variety of factors, many volunteer fire departments are experiencing the need to recruit and retain more members. Tuition reimbursement can be an effective incentive for people to volunteer in their local community. The deadline to apply for tuition reimbursement for the upcoming semester is October 2nd. BOBCATS OPENING DAY - The Plainedge Bobcats Football Opening Day was recently held at John H. West School in the Plainedge school district. Supervisor Venditto and the Town Officials were joined by the Plainedge Bobcat Football players and cheerleaders along with members of the Plainedge School Board to celebrate the debut of what is sure to be an excellent football season.
Fundraiser in Memory of Brittney The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund, a nonprofit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh, is holding its 3rd Annual Bowling Fundraiser at Farmingdale Lanes on October 24th. On June 24th, 2012, just two days after Brittney’s high school graduation, she was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic incident has left her family and friends in a great deal of pain. Long Islanders as a whole have expressed their grief, shock and sympathy. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund has been designed to assist children just like Brittney - young people who excel in academics, push themselves to give 100% in sports and are active in school clubs. The goal
is to provide three high school seniors each year with scholarships to help make their futures a little brighter. In the 18 years of her life, Brittney touched the hearts of so many people with her love, smile and generosity. With your help, she can continue to do so. The family is asking businesses for their support in this fundraising endeavor. English as a Second Language teacher Mary Cullen, school psychologist Jaclyn Quercia and leave replacement reading teacher Amy Livermore start the year at Fairfield Elementary School. Special Education teacher Christina Piotrowski serves students at Fairfield and McKenna elementary schools. Rotational Arts Program Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joseph D. Muscarella is pleased to announce that the Town of Oyster Bay, Department of Community and Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts Division, is seeking submissions for its 42nd Annual Rotational Art Exhibit Program. This program allows local artists to display their work in libraries, banks, government offices and local businesses on a monthly “rotational” basis. This is the perfect chance for residents to bring their artistic talents to use in the community.
Novice and experienced artists are encouraged to enter a preview on Sunday, November 1st. The work is judged for acceptability into this program by professional artists and teachers. Awards will be presented at a later date in the fields of photography, brush work and other media. The Town invites local businesses to join in supporting these local artists. The Rotational Arts Exhibit Program provides emerging and mid-career artists with a chance to see their artwork exhibited throughout
the Town of Oyster Bay. Business owners have the opportunity to support local artists, in addition to offering their patrons the pleasure of viewing artwork in a setting they normally wouldn’t. This program is free to both artists and businesses. The application deadline for artists to enter the preview is October 1st. Paying Off with Pancakes
The North Massapequa Fire Department (NMFD) will be hosting its Annual Fire Prevention Open House on Friday Night October 9th at its headquarters, 1000 Broadway, from 7 to 9 p.m. The 41st Annual Children’s Rag-A-Muffin Costume Parade will be held on Sunday, October 25th. The Children’s Rag-A-Muffin Costume Parade will start at 12 noon at the corner of North Nassau Avenue, process north on Broadway and conclude behind Fire Department Headquarters. There will be no rain date. All children who participate must be registered so they will be eligible for free prizes. “The Rag-A-Muffin Parade is always special,” explained NMFD Chief Kevin B. Mauro. “For over four decades we have hosted this outstanding event, which has brought tremendous joy to our community’s families, and especially our young
people. Our department is extremely proud of this event and I know our residents are looking forward to many more years of the Rag-A-Muffin parade.” The event is always held near Halloween, which provides some extra atmosphere to an event already charged with excitement. “It’s a great day for the children,” Chief Mauro said. “Kids can wear costumes before Halloween to make sure they’re ready for trick-ortreating. After the costume parade they’re sure to be excited with the prospect of winning a bicycle or another great prize at the award ceremony.” Registration will be held on Friday, October 9th from 7 to 9 p.m. during Fire prevention Open House at Fire Department headquarters and Sunday, September 27th at the Fire Department Booth at the Annual Columbus Lodge #2143 Italian Feast and
Festival. Late registration will take place at 11 am on Sunday, October 25th at the start of the parade, North Nassau Avenue and North Broadway. Chief Mauro also urged residents to bring their families to the Department’s Annual Fire Prevention Open House, slated for Friday, October 9, 2015 from 7 to 9 p.m. “Our fire prevention program is outstanding and will include live demonstrations, hands on training, blood pressure checks, jaws of life demonstration and free goodies for both children and adults. Fire Prevention posters prepared by local school children will also be on display,” explained Chief Mauro. “Most importantly, residents will learn how to keep their families safe. We hope to see everyone there.”

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has extended the deadline for flood insurance policyholders to submit their Hurricane Sandy Claims for review. The last day to submit claims is now October 15th, 2015. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced today that any additional flood insurance proceeds up to $20,000 will not be treated as duplicative. Federal agencies cannot provide disaster assistance for losses covered by insurance. HUD’s announcement stated that “this will eliminate the need for HUD grantees to reclaim
assistance from these households or to repay those funds through nonfederal sources. To date, three out of four National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) claimants have received less than $20,000 in additional compensation from FEMA and will not face any possible repayment.” Roy Wright, FEMA’s Deputy Associate Administrator for Insurance and Mitigation, encouraged policyholders to call FEMA and request a review if they believe their claims were underpaid for any reason. As of September 14th, nearly 14,000 policyholders have requested reviews of their Sandy flood insurance
claims. “FEMA remains committed to making sure that every policyholder gets every dollar they are owed under their flood insurance policy. Already, thousands of policyholders have contacted us to have their claims reviewed and we have begun providing funds to those who were due additional payments on their claim,” Wright said. “We are hopeful that HUD’s action to provide relief to the vast majority of those who are concerned about potential duplicative benefits will encourage even more policyholders who may have been initially
reluctant to enter the process to do so,” Wright said. “In light of HUD’s decision to simplify this review and provide relief, we are extending the claims review deadline until October 15th. We hope by extending the deadline we are addressing any remaining concerns some may have about entering the claims review process. The review process we have established is designed to be simple, fair, and accessible without paid legal assistance. FEMA is dead set on restoring trust in this important program and no one should be discouraged from having their claim reviewed.”

Taking a Stand Against Falls Fall is just around the corner, but falls shouldn’t be just around the corner for older adults. That’s why New York State and Nassau University Medical Center are joining forces with the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and the Falls Free® Coalition to celebrate Falls Prevention Awareness Day on September 23rd, 2015 – the first day of Fall. “While falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injury for people 65 years of age and older, they are not an inevitable part of aging.
This year’s Fall Prevention Awareness Day theme, Take a Stand to Prevent Falls, seeks to raise awareness about how to prevent fall-related injury among older adults,” stated Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, NuHealth/ NUMC’s President/CEO. “According to the CDC, in the United States, there were 2.5 million older adult falls in 2013, resulting in 734,000 of these patients being hospitalized, and $34 billion in medical costs (adjusted for inflation). “We can change this by
bringing greater attention to the many preventive measures that can be easily employed to keep our seniors safe.” Studies show that a combination of behavior changes can significantly reduce falls among older adults. Experts recommend: • Participating in a physical activity regimen with balance, strength training, and flexibility components. • Consulting with a health professional about getting a fall risk assessment.
• Having medications reviewed periodically. • Getting eyes and ears checked annually. • Making sure the home environment is safe and supportive. The recent United States of Aging Survey polled older adults to find out about how they are preparing for their later years. It found that more than half of seniors questioned said they would be interested in the expansion of communitybased health promotion programs, including falls prevention classes.
At senior centers and other community-based organizations across the United States, programs like A Matter of Balance, Tai Chi, and Stepping On help older adults gain strength, improve balance, and build confidence to help them live healthier lives and preserve their independence. With assistance from the New York State Dept. of Health, we will be starting our Tai Chi program in the near future. Tai Chi is an evidence-based, strength and balancing program which has been proven to
reduce falls in the elderly. New York State is part of the national Falls Free® Initiative, which includes 43 state-based falls prevention coalitions and 70 national organizations, professional associations, and federal agencies across the country dedicated to reducing fallrelated injuries and deaths among older adults.
