with Buddy the Betta By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been days, and still no sign of my human. No light on in the kitchen. No food pellet delivery at dinnertime. No – dare I say it – bath time. Nothing. Where did she go? Alone in my bowl, I swim my solitary laps, counting down the hours, days, weeks… it must be weeks by now. Just me and my plant (which, by the way, is starting to look pretty tasty at this point). I should’ve known something was up when I found a few extra flakes in my bowl right after the last human sighting. And the suitcase… what was that for? Come to think of it, I heard something about “vacation,” whatever that
is, and then this giant bettashaped vitamin was placed in my bowl with promises of food coming shortly. When? It’s already been at least a month. Time tends to fast forward when you live in a bowl. But, wait… here it is – a flake. And another. Where did they come from? No human in sight, but this little vitamin seems to be melting into food! Oh thank goodness! She didn’t forget about me after all. I wonder if she’ll ever be back? {826 Days Later…} I hear a noise! The front door… the light… MY HUMAN HAS RETURNED! Oh boy, oh boy! If I had longer fins, I’d give her the biggest hug ever! Oh, and here comes the good food,
my gourmet pellets, with a few extra thrown in – how sweet. She didn’t abandon me after all. But where did she go? I see the suitcase… but no presents? No souvenirs for Buddy? And what’s this about “bath time” now? She’s been home five minutes and already this nonsense about cleaning out the remnants of the vitamin from my bowl. Good grief. There had better be a good explanation for all this. I expect a special trip to the pet store this weekend to pick out a new toy… and extra food… and at least a week’s notice the next time one of these “vacation” things takes place. Better yet, I expect to be invited along.

The Over 50 Fair, now in its sixth year, finds new ways to connect with Baby Boomers and Seniors each year. The annual event is the largest “over 50” expo on Long Island. This year’s event, on Sunday, September 27th, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Melville Marriott, introduces its newest addition, a Singles Lounge. “Every year, our single guests request a way to meet other singles. Seven in Heaven Singles Events will be facilitating this interaction in our new Singles Lounge, which will have music, a seating area, and icebreaker games several times during the day, such as Kings and Queens,” explained East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, the Over 50 Fair director. As in the past, the Over 50 Fair will also have 90 exhibitors and 30 speakers including local and national celebrities.

Chef Jonathan of Fox TV’s hit show MasterChef Season 6, its most recent season, will be preparing California Style Calamari Salad and doing a “meet and greet.” Not to be outdone, Chef AJ of Fox TV’s MasterChef Junior Season 3, the most recent season, will be cooking Quesadillas for all to try. Chef AJ, age 11, was a huge hit at April’s All Kids Fair where she
prepared waffles with fresh whipped cream and fruit. The newly crowned Ms. New York Senior America 2015, CJ Marie, will be in attendance, along with her counterparts from 2013 and 2014. Edith Jason, one of the oldest yoga teachers on Long Island, will be teaching a yoga class. Mrs. Jason, age 80, has been teaching yoga since 1986 and currently teaches several times a week at Winthrop Hospital.

Back to the Classroom Under sunny skies and sizzling temperatures, nearly 7,200 fresh-faced and bright-eyed students returned to Massapequa schools with new backpacks, school supplies and a new focus on learning. Grades 1-12 returned on Sept. 2 while kindergartners, in Massapequa tradition, returned to school on September 3rd. “We are delighted to welcome back our students and staff and look forward to a year of new growth,” said Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis. Doors opened with 43 new teachers and a reorganized administrative staff, spurred by the retirements of several longtime staff members. Instructionally, new curriculum initiatives were implemented to better ensure proficiency in writing and math as the district moves into the fourth year of working with the Common Core Learning Standards. Other curriculum changes include a new reading series by McMillan/McGraw Hill called Wonders for grades 2-5 and the expansion of the online instructional program, Compass Learning, into all secondand third-grade classrooms.
The program uses the results of the computerized NWEA assessment — which provides realtime information about students’ strengths and weaknesses in reading and math — and through various individualized, instructional-rich exercises completed at an individualized pace, students work on strengthening and enhancing their academic skills. The program was piloted in third-grade classrooms at East Lake Elementary School and in math support classes at Berner Middle School. East Lake students will continue to use the program in fourth grade. Marking the second year of the district’s “Learning…Anytime, Anywhere” initiative, the number of students issued Chromebooks as a primary instructional device has expanded from the middle school level to middle school and freshmen at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus. Among the district’s technology upgrades are new teacher workstations in classrooms, reimaged instructional computers, whiteboard installations and the rollout
of Microsoft Office 2013 districtwide. Improvements to buildings and grounds, such as roof repairs, were made possible through the $37.5 million bond issue that was passed by voters last October. Additional upgrades are forthcoming as permits and approvals are secured. Massapequa, like all districts across the state, is also working to meet state mandates associated with the teacher evaluation system, APPR (Annual Professional Performance Review), which connects students’ academic growth to professional performance. The district also continues to examine student performance and achievement on the rigorous CCLS-aligned state assessments. “As we meet these state mandates, our number one priority is to deliver the best core instructional program for our students,” Iconis said. “We have excellent tools and resources, highly skilled staff members and a wonderfully supportive community, key factors that will continue to drive our success, and propel our district forward in the new year.”

Creek Restoration The Seatuck Environmental Association (Seatuck) has documented juvenile alewife in Massapequa Creek. It is the first time youngof-the-year fish have been found in the creek. Their presence is clear evidence that alewives are successfully spawning in the freshwater portion of the tributary, likely for the first time since the creek was impounded more than 175 years ago. Alewives are a species of river herring, marine fish that spend most of their lives in the ocean, but that migrate (like salmon) into freshwater tributaries to spawn. At one time every river and stream on Long Island hosted an earlyspring “run” of alewives. The millions of foot-long fish that migrated into the region’s estuaries and tributaries were a boon to a wide range of predatory species, including everything from bluefish and stripped bass to osprey and seals. However, the construction of dams and roadways impounded most of the region’s tributaries and destroyed alewives’ access to upstream
spawning habitat. In 2010, the County of Nassau, with support from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Restoration Center, US Fish & Wildlife Service and NY Department of Environmental Conservation (NYDEC), installed a fish ladder in the spillway at Massapequa Lake. It provided permanent up-stream access to freshwater portions of the tributary for the first time since the dam’s original construction in 1837. In 2012, Seatuck and the NYDEC stocked 300 wild alewives into Massapequa Creek to help jump-start the restoration. While adult alewives have been documented returning to the creek each of the past few years, the presence of young-of-the-year fish is the first definitive evidence that they are successfully spawning upstream of the fish ladder. The juvenile fish Seatuck netted and filmed hatched in early April, likely right in Massapequa Lake. They are in the process of moving out of the tributary and
into the Great South Bay. Eventually they will make their way out to the ocean. After reaching maturity in 4 or 5 years, they will reverse the trip, returning to Massapequa Creek to spawn. The restoration of alewives to Massapequa Creek and other tributaries around Long Island will provide far-reaching environmental benefits. Their migration transfers much needed energy from the ocean into our estuaries and tributaries each spring. The adults provide important forage for a wide range of birds, fish and mammals, precisely at a time when many species, such as osprey, are completing their own migration and fueling up for the reproductive season. Later, the alewives’ eggs and young provide important food for additional species throughout the estuary. It is not an exaggeration to say that alewives help to drive our entire coastal ecosystem. ADIRONDACK ADVENTURE - Members of Venturing Crew 130 spent a week on an Adirondack adventure this summer. The trek included three days canoeing and camping on Long Lake, hiking, riding special bikes made for old train tracks (only place in the USA to do this), museums and other adventures with trained adult support. Drug Awareness Program In an ongoing effort to educate parents and students about the latest trends and dangers of substance abuse, the Massapequa School District is highlighting drug awareness resources during Back-to-School night at each of its nine schools. Each parent will receive a detailed guide, “A Parent’s Guide for the Prevention of Alcohol,
Tobacco and Other Drug Use” published by the Massapequa Kiwanis Club, filled with a host of information from “The Adolescent Brain” to the “Signs and Symptoms…. Communication” to “The Legal Consequences.” Parents can also download the “Drug Guide for Parents” app for free. Kiwanis’ message will be infused into other school
presentations throughout the school year, such as the district’s mandatory Parent/Athlete meetings to reinforce the importance of substance abuse prevention. “We want parents to walk out of their child’s school armed with the information they need to keep their children safe, and to have the knowledge they need to

YES Community Counseling is a driving force in the MTA consortium.
Through this partnership, we have had numerous awareness programs, such as “Students Against Destructive Decisions” beginning at the elementary level, experts speakers, including Dr. Stephen Dewey and his presentation “Your Brain on Drugs” and John Halligan’s famous bullying/ suicide prevention program, and programs that teach students new skills so they can respond to an emergency situation, such as the Red Watch Band Program.
