A Little Humor Teachers and staff in the Massapequa School District were welcomed back to school with a healthy dose of laughter and positive energy as motivational speaker Sam Glenn took to the stage during Superintendent’s Conference Day on September 1st. Glenn’s boisterous, comedic style entertained the crowd while driving home the powerful message of putting one’s attitude in a positive place and building one’s “humor muscle.” Standing before a painting of a tree he created called “Roots to Success,” Glenn shared stories to illustrate how to rise above negativity in building a path to success. “When you get better, education gets better,” he said. “Your attitude is your message.” Superintendent Lucille Iconis opened the day’s presentation by building on her theme of a “growth mindset” with the book, “The Energy Bus” by Jon Gordon.

She then announced two recognitions that she attributes to that mindset. For the first time, Massapequa High School has made “Newsweek’s” list of “America’s Top 500 Public High Schools.” Massapequa ranked at 401 and was 21 public high schools on Long Island to make the list. Iconis was equally delighted to share that Massapequa was awarded the NYSSMA Presidential Citation Award, the highest distinction bestowed upon a music education program. Punctuating that achievement was a performance by AllState musicians Courtney Conkling and Mackenzie Conkling who played an original piece by Brown University music student Joshua Gaines called “June 30th.” They were accompanied by longtime Massapequa music department volunteer Nancy Deutsch. Iconis introduced the board of education, her central office team,

new administrators, and administrators that have moved into different positions. She also expressed excitement about the new elementary foreign language program, Maker Spaces, the College Board Capstone program and providing sixth-graders greater opportunities when Berner Middle School is reconfigured in 2017. Also taking the podium were Board of Education President Maryanne Fisher who thanked teachers for “guiding students on a path that prepares students for college and careers” and wished them another successful year. Massapequa Federation of Teachers President Tomia Smith urged her colleagues to “look for individuality in students and find it in yourselves,” and PTA Council President Allyson Prystupa shared a poem about making a difference. The day continued with mandated emergency management safety training and faculty meetings.

Learning Everywhere The Massapequa School District is expanding its one-to-one Chromebook initiative for the 20162017 school year, which puts a device in the hands of all secondary students. This is part of the district’s mission to elevate learning through “anytime, anywhere access” to information. This marks the first year that all seventh- through 12th-grade students in the district will have a Google Chromebook, which they can use at home and at school. Ed Kemnitzer, the executive assistant for technology integration of curriculum support and development, said that about 3,500 students have now been equipped with this technology. Seventh- and eighthgrade students were the first to receive Chromebooks in December 2014. Those students kept their assigned devices into the 2015-2016 school year, when the program expanded to include ninth grade. To complete the initiative at the secondary level, Massapequa High

School juniors and seniors were handed Chromebooks for the first time on August 30th and 31st. This year’s incoming students at Berner Middle School were given their devices on Aug. 26 and 29. “The primary purpose of our ‘Learning… Anytime, Anywhere’ oneto-one platform is to allow students and teachers efficient and effective access to instructional and communication resources,” said Robert Schilling, executive director for assessment, student data and technology services. “This fall marks a milestone, in that all grades 7 through 12 are now involved in this platform.” Chromebooks are laptop-like devices designed to access the Internet using the Google Chrome operating system. Their speed, low cost and the ease of use have made them a device of choice in education worldwide. Countless Internet-based resources are now readily available to Chromebook users, such as Google Docs,

which allows students and teachers the ability to work on the editing process together, each from their own machine. “At the secondary level, it’s pretty much the primary tool in the classroom,” Mr. Kemnitzer said of the Chromebooks. “We believe in how instructional technology enhances and redesigns the learning experience.” Secondary teachers all received Chromebooks prior to their students and received professional development on how to effectively utilize web-based resources in instruction. Mr. Kemnitzer said that since the one-toone initiative began three years ago, some teachers have moved to paperless classrooms. Wireless capability has been upgraded throughout the secondary schools to support the use of these devices. The district also has 750 Chromebooks available throughout its six elementary schools for use during the day, with plans in place to upgrade WiFi in those buildings this year.

They were assigned a mentor from a law school to prepare them for a mock trial competition at the end

of the seminar. The mentor was Massapequa alumna Maria Benvenuto, who was the lead attorney on the 2011 Mock Trial team and is currently at Boston College Law School. The Massapequa students won both cases they argued on the last day of the seminar. These incoming sophomores will take the skills they learned this summer to the International Empire State Mock Trial Competition in November.

My Summer Slumber Buddy here, checking in on behalf of my Human, who has just returned from one of those “vacation” outings I detest so much. You would think, after over 18 months of residence, I would have earned the right to tag along on a trip; but alas, Buddy the Betta was abandoned yet again, left to my own devices. Don’t get me wrong, the solitude is nice on occasion. No Human faces pressed up against the glass making fishy faces, no incessant tapping on the counter to get my attention, no bath times to contend with… but eventually, a fish does become lonely. Every morning, I would wake from my slumber expecting to be greeted with the usual love and adoration – and breakfast, of course. But nothing. Days passed, and all I found was a measly dissolving chalk-like thing with flakes embedded in it. At first, I thought it was a pillow; but eventually, I realized this was the best option on the menu for me for the time being. Speaking of bizarre sleeping

choices, it seems that every time my Human overhauls the tank to clean my gravel and my beloved plant, she never puts things quite back where she found them. Gone are my cozy nooks to snuggle in; replaced instead by mounds of pebbles. This has forced me to explore other options, among them, the top of the filter, where one strong current can send me sailing to a spot of rest just below the water line. Comfy indeed. Of course, when my Human forgets to replenish my water from time to time, I find myself hanging off the side, seemingly in a state of unrest. But not to worry, I can sleep just about anywhere, in any position. That includes laying on a leaf, wrapped around the filter tube, or just about vertical, face pressed against the gravel. Just turn my light off and “Do Not Disturb” – a fish needs his beauty rest, especially one as lovely as me. The last time I had nestled in for the night – or morning, as it were – I was rudely awakened by calls of “bath time for Buddy!”

Being the stubborn sort, I wrapped my fins firmly around the filter tube and refused to budge, gleefully watching as my Human tried to nudge me out of my corner with the back end of a spoon. Only when she began to lift the filter out with me on top of it did I realize that this was a losing battle. Little did I know that this particular bath was in preparation for the vacation I was not to be invited on. Talk about adding insult to injury. On a somewhat positive note, my Human did leave the light on for me, since I seem to flit around with more ease when my tank is illuminated. Better yet, when she returned, I was rewarded with “bonus” flakes for being such a good boy while she was gone – you know, not getting sucked into the filter or anything. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy signing off on behalf of his Human. Coalition recently held a free Naloxone (Narcan) Training Program at the Massapequa Public LibraryBar Harbour. Participants

learned how to recognize the signs and symptoms of an Opioid overdose and administer the lifesaving antidote Narcan.

“Heroin and prescription drug abuse are affecting individuals, families and communities across Long Island and New York State. I have worked alongside my Senate and Assembly colleagues in putting forth legislation that will provide various treatment and recovery options, insurance coverage for addiction services and treatment, as well as offer free educational programs,” said Senator Venditto. “Also, I continue working together with local elected officials, community representatives and substance abuse agencies to offer residents free

programs like Naloxone training and substance abuse awareness in order to help fight this deadly epidemic and save lives,” said Senator Venditto. Recently, New York State passed comprehensive legislation designed to proactively break the cycle of Heroin and Opioid abuse by improving prevention efforts, increasing access to treatment, expanding recovery options and providing greater resources to law enforcement to aid in combating this crisis. This multi-prong approach will help municipalities combat substance abuse at the most local level… offering hope and solutions

for all of our communities. “I have been very fortunate to work with Senator Venditto achieving some of the milestones to protect young people and families from the scourge of heroin and Opioid abuse. I applaud this opportunity to train people how to use the lifesaving tool, Narcan.
